Download or read book Yonkers in the Twentieth Century written by Marilyn E. Weigold and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the economic, political, and social evolution of New York States fourth largest city during the twentieth century. Yonkers in the Twentieth Century chronicles the decline and rebirth of the fourth largest city in New York State, once known as the Queen City of the Hudson and the City of Gracious Living. Previously an industrial powerhouse, the citys factories turned out essential items that helped the United States win two world wars. Following World War II, the industrial base of Yonkers eroded as companies moved away, contributing to an increase in poverty. To address the housing needs of its low-income residents, Yonkers built public housing, resulting in a nearly thirty-year court case that, for the first time in United States history, linked school and housing segregation. The case was finally settled in the early years of the twenty-first century, a time that also witnessed the continuation of the citys economic redevelopment efforts along the Hudson River and contiguous downtown area. Striving to once again become the Queen City of the Hudson, Yonkers is being rebuilt beginning at its historic waterfront. Yonkers in the Twentieth Century provides readers an in-depth perspective of our city that has not yet been told. From the glory days at the dawn of the twentieth century to its later turbulent decades, Marilyn E. Weigold thoughtfully takes us through the vibrant history of our city, affording us the knowledge needed to appreciate our past so to best plan for our future. I encourage those who have an insatiable interest and pride in Yonkers to explore Weigolds comprehensive narrative and take a step back in time. Mike Spano, Mayor of the City of Yonkers Yonkers has such an interesting and vibrant history that it needs to be preserved and told. This book is a major accomplishment providing a comprehensive look at the life of the city and will leave a lasting legacy for residents, historians, and all those who appreciate and value knowing how we got to where we are today. Book excerpt: Reviews the public spaces that have been created, used, or enhanced in memory lives lost from terrorists' attacks of September 11, 2001. Reports the results of a national registry that serves as an online inventory of living memorial sites and social motivations. Through the first year of research, more than 200 living memorials were located in every state in the U.S. This publication includes findings associated with research conducted in the first year of the multi-year study. One of the findings was that after September 11, 2001, communities needed space: space to create, space to teach, space to restore, space to create a locus of control. These social motivations formed the basis of patterned human responses observed throughout the nation. A site typology emerged adhering to specific forms and functions that often reflected a variance in attitudes, beliefs, and social networks.

Book excerpt: On May 17, 1899, Patrick Sullivan married Mary Jane Carroll in Yonkers, New York, despite the objections of Patricks family, who believed he was marrying below his class. But their dreams of living a long life together came to an end when Patrick died unexpectedly on August 13, 1911, leaving Mary destitute with four children and a fifth who was born three weeks after Patricks death. Shunned by Patricks family, Mary and her children fought off starvation in a tenement in Yonkers for several months. Then one evening, she was visited by her two brothers, John and Barney, who insisted her entire family move into and share their meager home at Six Moquette Row. There, the children were raised by their grandmother, mother, and their two loving uncles. A story for the ages, Six Moquette Row, by author John F. Sullivan, narrates the true story of how one familys love and a shared devotion to one another turned what would have inevitably been a horrific tragedy into an incredible successa story that now totals more than eighty descendants.

This book was released on 1999-10-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a profession in which billions of federal dollars have been spent to reduce academic underachievement—particularly for minority children from poverty homes. Few funded programs have reduced failure on standardized achievement tests. Despite either repetition or innovation, most children who fail do not perform substantially better the next time around. On the other hand, practitioners who have used the Dunn and Dunn learning-styles approaches have reported statistically higher standardized achievement test scores among average, poorly achieving, and special education students. This book is based on the practical, diverse experiences of more than thirty different supervisors throughout the United States. Representing a variety of urban and suburban locations with diverse student populations, each supervisor was able to obtain significantly higher standardized achievement test scores for his or her student populations.

Download or read book The City is My Canvas written by Richard Haas and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary trompe l'oeil artist Richard Haas transforms the drab exteriors of neglected buildings into breath-taking facades. The City Is My Canvas documents his most important projects of the last two decades in lavish double-page spreads which illustrate the "before" and "after" phases of each site. From Italian Quadrata paintings to Baroque and Rococo interiors, trompe l'oeil murals have a long tradition as decoration and didactic illustration. Muralist Richard Haas brings this tradition into the 21st-century as he revitalizes forgotten buildings in eroding city centers by creating new "false" facades that seamlessly blend into the existing environment. "The world is constantly changing, and the needs of the city change with it", says Haas. "Even if blank urban walls at key locations of the city are now primarily seen as opportunities for computer-generated advertisements, whole segments of the mid-range urban American landscape and large areas of our edge cities remain in drastic need of refinement, softening, and improvement".
