Book Mysticism Ineffability and Silence in Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Mysticism Ineffability and Silence in Philosophy of Religion written by Laura E. Weed and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors in this volume explore a wide variety of the contemporary approaches to mystical and religious experience to elucidate what religious experience is, in its own terms, and how its practitioners understand it. This anthology features contributions that point out that contemporary studies of consciousness, sociology, hermeneutics, neuroscience, medicine, and other fields, are revealing that there is much more to be said for the inner life of a human’s consciousness than reductionists and behaviorists will allow. This book is one of very few that primarily takes the stance of academic practitioners, explaining their own experience, rather than that of academics trying to explain the phenomena away, as really politics, or sociology, or delusion, or psychological pathology, or literary flights of fancy, or an aberration of any of the other academic fields. Most of the authors in this volume embrace the task of explaining and analyzing religious experience, mysticism, and the healing power of silence and presence, using the resources of all of the academic disciplines, as appropriate. The essays contained analyze religious, and non-religious, mystical and profoundly personal experiences across several world religions, and in areas such as art and music, as well as in solving personal crises such as family disruption and patriarchal oppression. The authors address the subject matter through analyses of the frequent and destructive failures of language, or just noise, to capture or express the nuances of the inner life of a person. It is this very ineffability of self that renders the spiritual, emotional and interior life of individuals beyond cognition and perception, of the straightforward sorts embraced by most cognitive disciplines. The contributors come from a variety of cross-disciplinary fields to bring forth the possibilities for an intuitive and creative, rich and growing inner life for a human. This text appeals to students, researchers, and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Matthew Sanford's inspirational story about the car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down is a superbly written memoir of healing and journey—from near death to triumphant life. Matt Sanford's life and body were irrevocably changed at age 13 on a snowy Iowa road. On that day, his family's car skidded off an overpass, killing Matt's father and sister and left him paralyzed from the chest down, confining him to a wheelchair. His mother and brother escaped from the accident unharmed but were left to pick up the pieces of their decimated family. This pivotal event set Matt on a lifelong journey, from his intensive care experiences at the Mayo Clinic to becoming a paralyzed yoga teacher and founder of a nonprofit organization. Forced to explore what it truly means to live in a body, he emerges with an entirely new view of being a "whole" person. By turns agonizingly personal, philosophical, and heartbreakingly honest, this groundbreaking memoir takes you inside the body, heart, and mind of a boy whose world has been shattered. Follow Sanford's journey as he rebuilds from the ground up, searching for "healing stories" to help him reconnect his mind and his body. To do so, he must reject much of what traditional medicine tells him and instead turn to yoga as a centerpiece of his daily practice. He finds not only a better life but also meaning and purpose in the mysterious distance that we all experience between mind and body. In Waking, Sanford delivers a powerful message about the endurance of the human spirit and of the body that houses it.

Book Silence Unheard

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yohanan Grinshpon
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 0791489949
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book Silence Unheard written by Yohanan Grinshpon and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silence Unheard maintains that the reality of Patañjali's Yogasūtra is a profound silence barely and variously audible to the scholars and interpreters who approach it. Even the Yogasūtra itself is an "approach," a voice articulating an other-- a silent, beyond-speech yogin. Author Yohanan Grinshpon presents Patañjali as a Sāṅkhya-philosopher, who interprets silence in accordance with his own dualist metaphysics and Buddhistic sensibilities. The Yogasūtra represents an intellectual's conceptualization of utter otherness rather than the yogin's verbalization of silence. Silence Unheard focuses on the yogin's supra-normal experiences (siddhis) as well as on the classification of silences and the ultimate goal of disintegration through guṇa balance. The book provides a translation of the Yogasūtra divided into two sections: an essential text, concerning the yoga practitioner, and a secondary text, concerning the philosopher. Grinshpon also surveys the encounters of intellectuals, scholars, seekers, devotees, and outsiders with the Yogasūtra.

In our world of form, there is not only no Truth, objectively speaking, but no Real. One's life is composed of beliefs, a present moment, and memory. We, humanity as a whole in form, are but One body comprised of aEURoethe many,aEUR who are all created living beings that emerged from the One GOD. Book Practice Silence and Meditation

Download or read book Practice Silence and Meditation written by JAYANTILAL SENDHABHAI PATEL and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practice Silence and Meditation talks about how space helps us get silence, the benefits of silence, the effect of silence in the progress of meditation, thoughts of various religions on meditation, how to become a thought observer or witness and the silence, meditation, peace of mind and state of Samadhi and the internal live force called prana energy in Hinduism and its uses. Silence brings us peace. Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha follow silence. Indian yogis are also advised to practice silence to improve mediation quality and get inner peace. Concentrating on your breathing during meditation helps in bringing space to your lives. You become conscious of your own breath and are in the present. Conscious breathing stops the process of thinking and remains aware and meditative. Prana energy is “name” in Hindu. It’s called “Chi” in Chinese and in Hebrew, it’s called “Ruash”. This energy is a vital force for life. When increased in the human body, it brings peace and good quality of meditation and, ultimately, the state of Samadhi. It is also used for spiritual healing in many countries. China invented acupuncture, in which normal power is required by the human body and enters through fine pins for healing or curing sickness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient art of meditation and asceticism based on a combination of sequential positions (Asana) and spiritual reflection tied listen to your own breathing and to a greater awareness of their existence in the "here and now" as body and soul, officially joined in schools, leading to the development of new pedagogical and educational projects that help children, teens as well as adults. In July 2007, thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education and the National Confederation of Yoga, the ancient art of meditation and asceticism based on a combination of sequential positions (Asana) and spiritual reflection tied listen to your own breathing and to a greater awareness of their existence in the "here and now" as body and soul, officially joined in schools, leading to the development of new pedagogical and educational projects that help children, teens as well as adults to find themselves through yoga. Need a much more compelling as it is becoming more virtual space in which they act and live our kids (not just their ... alas), a company reaching out to the image flowing, uncontrolled sedimentation of the moments that we are not aware of living, a company that pays little attention to children as children, but as recipients of consumer goods whose advertising bombards their mothers.
