Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Wittig first developed and described phosphorus ylides, nobody could have imagined how useful and versatile this class of compounds could be. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date compilation of the chemistry and applications of phosphorus ylides in organic synthesis. The ylides are discussed as reagents in the synthesis of a broad range of substances, amongst them olefins, acetylenes, cyclic and heterocyclic compounds, in such naturally occurring compounds as pheromones, steroids and carotenoids, and pharmaceutically and biologically active compounds such as antibiotics and prostaglandins. A particularly beneficial feature of this book is the 150 key experimental procedures with all the necessary data, allowing the preparation to start immediately without the need for an extremely time-consuming literature search. But should a search prove inevitable, around 2,500 references provide easy access to the primary literature. Every chemist in academia and industry working in organic, bioorganic, inorganic, and medicinal chemistry will welcome this book as an inspiration of concepts, ideas and practical syntheses.

  • Author : B J Walker
  • Publisher : Royal Society of Chemistry

  • ISBN : 1847554466
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book Organophosphorus Chemistry written by B J Walker and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organophosphorus Chemistry provides a comprehensive annual review of the literature. Coverage includes phosphines and their chalcogenides, phosphonium salts, low coordination number phosphorus compounds, penta- and hexa-coordinated compounds, tervalent phosphorus acids, nucleotides and nucleic acids, ylides and related compounds, and phosphazenes. The series will be of value to research workers in universities, government and industrial research organisations, whose work involves the use of organophosphorus compounds. It provides a concise but comprehensive survey of a vast field of study with a wide variety of applications, enabling the reader to rapidly keep abreast of the latest developments in their specialist areas. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Advanced Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Advanced Organic Chemistry written by Francis A. Carey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-05-02 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The control of reactivity to achieve specific syntheses is one of the overarching goals of organic chemistry. In the decade since the publication of the third edition, major advances have been made in the development of efficient new methods, particularly catalytic processes, and in means for control of reaction stereochemistry. This volume assumes a level of familiarity with structural and mechanistic concepts comparable to that in the companion volume, Part A, Structures and Mechanisms. Together, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry. The New Revised 5th Edition will be available shortly. For details, click on the link in the right-hand column.

Book excerpt: Over two decades have passed since the fifth edition of Phosphorus: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology. Major advances in chemistry, materials science, electronics, and medicine have expanded and clarified the role of phosphorus in both our everyday appliances and groundbreaking research. Significantly expanded, updated, and reorganized, this sixth edition organizes and explains vital phosphorus research and relevant information available in highly specialized reviews and references on select related topics. An authoritative and comprehensive review of phosphorus chemistry and related technology, Phosphorus: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology covers historical, academic, industrial, agricultural, military, biological, and medical aspects of phosphorous. Furthermore, it offers a starting point for more extended studies of the highly specialized branches of phosphorus chemistry. Although this book deals with a small fraction of the > 106 known phosphorus compounds, it thoroughly covers the simpler derivatives and most key compounds of economic, sociological, and biological importance. Extensively updated and expanded with tables, figures, equations, structural formulae, and references, it is ideal for scientists in related fields seeking a rapid introduction to phosphorus chemistry.

Book New Gas phase Cascade Reactions of Stabilising Phosphorus Ylides Leading to Ring fused Indoles and Quinolines

Download or read book New Gas phase Cascade Reactions of Stabilising Phosphorus Ylides Leading to Ring fused Indoles and Quinolines written by Lorna Murray and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesis and flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of stabilised phosphorus ylides containing an o-amino functionalised benzene ring has been examined for the first time. Model studies using N-methyl-N-tosyl and N-mesyl-N-methyl ylides showed that the ylides could be prepared, although yields were variable, and had the expected spectroscopic properties. Upon FVP, however, the expected loss of Ph3PO and the sulfonyl group was accompanied by unexpected transfer of the reactive site from nitrogen to carbon giving 3- substituted quinolines rather than the expected indole products. Moving to ylides with an [alpha]-cinnamoyl group (or heterocyclic analogue) did, however, result in the originally planned tandem cyclisation leading to ring-fused carbazole products. N-Benzyl was also found to be a suitable thermally labile group and a series of [alpha]-cinnamoyl N-benzyl-N-methyl ylides were prepared and characterised. For their synthesis, use of N-cinnamoylbenzotriazoles was found to be preferable to cinnamoyl chloride, requiring only half the amount of amino-functionalised phosphonium salt. While FVP of some of these ylides led to benzo-, furo- and thienocarbazoles in good yield, others again gave quinoline-type products pointing to a fine balance between the two alternative modes of cyclisation. It was noted that one of the furocarbazole products was very similar to a natural product, Eustifoline D, isolated from the medicinally active shrub Murraya euchrestifolia from Taiwan and its synthesis was planned. With a view to producing the required N-H carbazole, N, N-dibenzylamino amino ylides were prepared and were found to exhibit restricted rotation leading to broad NMR signals. Their FVP again led to both quinoline and carbazole products, with the former having usually, but not always, lost a phenyl group. Mechanistic pathways for the formation of the various products are proposed. Complete assignment of the complex 1H NMR spectra of the various fused-ring heterocyclic products was achieved, assisted by simulations in many cases. The ylide precursor required for Eustifoline D was prepared in five steps and 10% overall yield from 5-methylanthranilic acid. The final FVP step gave a quinoline as the major product, but the minor product was Eustifoline D, spectroscopically identical to the natural product.
