Book excerpt: This book is the translation of the Memorial (Yizkor) Book of the town of Horodenka, Ukraine (Sefer Horodenka) The history of the Jewish community of Horodenka in Eastern Galicia began in 1743. Only in the eighteenth century did the Jews become a significant part of the town. In the period of 1870 to 1927, the average percentage of Jews in the town's population was between 33% and 40%. The rich Jewish culture that developed in the town is described in this book. It all came to an end in June 1941, when the Nazis invaded Russian territory; according to reliable evidence about 3,000 adults and children were murdered in 1941 and 1942 in three "Actions." Several young Jews escaped this fate by joining the partisans in the forests on the other side of the Dniester River. Book excerpt: Sochaczew, located in central Poland is a town about 44 miles due west of Warsaw, whose Jewish presence dates back to the 15th century. The first reported Jew in town was in 1463 - a doctor. Life was not easy for the Jews due to an alleged "blood libel" in the mid- 16th century, and the rabbi was punished with a death penalty, along with several other inhabitants. In the 19th century the Jewish community grew. Sochaczew became a great Hasidic center, first led by Tzaddik Abraham Bornsztajn. In the later part of the 19th century reconstruction of the synagogue began after the previous one was burned down. Being on the road between Berlin and Warsaw many of the Jews fled during World War I. There were several town "personalities" such as Chaikel the Wagon Driver that were written about in addition the many rabbis. There were workers' movements and professional unions as well as a Bund and Communist Circle. Memories of some of the survivors are related in the book. The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis when they entered the town in September 1939, and the town was destroyed during World War ll. Many of the Jews ended up in the Warsaw ghetto and some ended up in the Skarzyko Work Camp. 4,000 Jews lived in the town at the start of the war. Few survived. Today, there are no Jews in the town.

The book was written by the town s (shtetl s) former Jewish residents who either had survived the Holocaust or had been born in Skala and previously had emigrated. Its purpose was to honor Skala s Jewish community, which had been annihilated by the Nazis and their cohorts. Most of the contributors to the original book were the survivors themselves, who felt a deep inner compulsion and moral obligation to those who perished, to tell the story of Jewish Skala and to share with their children and future generations their memories of suffering, struggle and loss. The Yizkor book was written primarily in Yiddish and Hebrew and was largely inaccessible to many modern researchers, most of whose families came from this shtetl. Skala on the River Zbrucz, a translation of the entire Yizkor book into English, now has been published by the Skala Research Group (whose members are investigating their roots in Skala) and the SBS. Situated in eastern Galicia and once ruled by Austro-Hungary, the town of Skala was part of Poland during World War II. It now is called Skala Podil ska and is part of Ukraine. The Skala Yizkor book includes articles, photographs, and documents on the history of the town s Jews from the 15th century up to and including the Holocaust, when the Jewish community was completely destroyed. This material recalls a once vibrant shtetl, its people, the environment in which they lived, their hopes, dreams and struggles for survival. The Yizkor book also describes the tragic events of the Holocaust, stories of those who survived and provides a list of Skala s Holocaust victims and survivors. The English translation contains a new chapter about the town s righteous gentiles who saved Jews during the Holocaust, as well as photographs showing Skala as it is today. It is a precious legacy that deserves to be preserved.
