Book Daoist Modern

Download or read book Daoist Modern written by Xun Liu and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Daoist encounter with modernity through the activities of Chen Yingning (1880-1969), a famous lay Daoist master, and his group in early twentieth-century Shanghai. In contrast to the usual narrative of Daoist decay, with its focus on monastic decline, clerical corruption, and popular superstitions, this study tells a story of Daoist resilience, reinvigoration, and revival. Between the 1920s and 1940s, Chen led a group of urban lay followers in pursuing Daoist self-cultivation techniques as a way of ensuring health, promoting spirituality, forging cultural self-identity, building community, and strengthening the nation. In their efforts to renew and reform Daoism, Chen and his followers became deeply engaged with nationalism, science, the religious reform movements, the new urban print culture, and other forces of modernity. Since Chen and his fellow practitioners conceived of the Daoist self-cultivation tradition as a public resource, they also transformed it from an "esoteric" pursuit into a public practice, offering a modernizing society a means of managing the body and the mind and of forging a new cultural, spiritual, and religious identity.

Book Yiquan 360

Download or read book Yiquan 360 written by Ling Seto and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of Yiquan for enthusiasts seeking a deeper and richer appreciation of the magnificence of the Internal Arts A departure from the standard "how-to" manual, Yiquan 360 provides the often missing theory and associated practice that will allow students of the Internal Arts to unlock their full potential as practitioners. It will demystify and fill knowledge gaps that exist outside of what is commonly taught and available in Internal Arts literature. Yiquan 360 was written to fulfill a promise made by Ling Seto to the late Francis H.T. Chan, a school mate and sparring partner of Bruce Lee, who served as a combat instructor to British troops stationed in Hong Kong. This book contains insights and teachings from almost fifteen years of training, observation and direction under Mr. Chan that are supported by Ling Seto's own experience and discoveries from five decades of martial arts study. As one of the rare texts to comprehensively describe and clarify the theory and practice behind the types of Internal Power and the techniques used by Yiquan to produce them, this book also reveals the founder's ultimate aim for Yiquan, and provides insight into other martial arts that utilise Internal Power, answering questions including the following: The rationale behind the slow pace of Taiji Yiquan's equivalent to Bagua's circle walking The role of Xingyi in influencing Yiquan The relation of the Internal Arts to Shaolin Qigong For current practitioners, this book is an invaluable resource that provides a bird's eye view of Yiquan, explaining all aspects of the art and the proper training progressions required to advance. For other internal arts students, this volume provides key insights into the methodology to produce Internal Power in their own practice. Through the understanding of Yiquan training procedures and their purpose, students can rediscover methods in their respective arts that will enhance their training and skills.

Book Research of Martial Arts

Download or read book Research of Martial Arts written by Shifu Jonathan Bluestein and published by Jonathan Bluestein. This book was released on 2014-07-27 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Bluestein's Research of Martial Arts is a book about the true essence of martial arts. It includes neither instruction on deadly killing techniques, nor mystical tales of so called super-human masters. Rather, it is a vast compilation of seriously thought-out observations made on the subject by the author, as well as many other martial artists and scientists, with a slight touch of history and humour. The goal of this project had from the start been to surpass the current standard in the martial arts literary market, and offer readers worldwide something which they have never seen before. In essence, a book in which are found countless answers for martial arts practitioners which they cannot be read elsewhere, which address commonly discussed martially-related topics with breadth and depth unparalleled in other works to this day (in any language). It holds among its pages no less than 220,000 words, containing knowledge which would be coveted by many. The aim of this book is to present the reader a coherent, clear-cut, and in-depth view of some of the most perplexing and controversial subjects in the world of martial arts, as well as providing a healthy dose of philosophical outlook on these subjects (from various individuals). At its core is the author's aspiration to build a stronger theoretical foundation for the discussion of martial arts, while addressing matters in innovative ways, which I have come to believe, would help people to better grasp the nature of these arts. There are books by authors who will tell you that some aspects of the martial arts are too complex for concrete, coherent and defined explanations. Others have used ambiguous terminology to explain what they could not pronounce otherwise. This is no such book. This book was written to provide you with the solid, applicable answers and ideas that you could actually understand, and take away with you. This book is mainly comprised of three parts: | Part I: From the Inside Out – External and Internal Gong Fu | This is essentially mostly a very long & thorough discussion of martial arts theory and practice. Traditional and modern concepts and methods are discussed through the mediums of Physiology, Biology, Anatomy, Psychology, Philosophy (Western and Oriental alike), sports science, and the author's personal experiences. The Internal Martial Arts of China receive a special, lengthier treatment in this part of the book. | Part II: Contemplations on Controlled Violence | This one is of a Philosophical and Psychological nature, and contains the author's thoughts on the martial arts and their manifestation in our daily lives, with guest-articles by various martial arts teachers. | Part III: The Wisdom of Martial Spirits: Teachers, and the Things They Hold Dear | This part includes various interesting and comprehensive interviews with distinguished martial arts masters, spanning dozens of pages each. Every one of the interviewees is a person whose views and ideas are thought provoking and well-worth reading. The teachers interviewed in this book are: Master Chen Zhonghua (Chen Taiji Quan) Master Yang Hai (Xing Yi Quan, Bagua Zhang and Chen Taiji Quan) Shifu Strider Clark (Tongbei Quan, Wu style Taiji, Shuai Jiao and more) Shifu Neil Ripski (Traditional Drunken Fist and many others) Sifu James Cama (Buddha Hand Wing Chun and Southern Praying Mantis) Itzik Cohen Sensei (Shito-ryu Karate) No matter the age, rank, status or experience – this book was written for everyone who see themselves part of the martial arts community. It is my sincere hope that any person who reads this book will benefit from the time he or she had spent doing so. May this work encourage others to continue intelligent writing and research in the field, as I was pushed forth and built upon the knowledge others have shared before me. May you have a pleasant reading experience! =]

Book Dragon and Tiger Medical Qigong Volume 1

Download or read book Dragon and Tiger Medical Qigong Volume 1 written by Bruce Frantzis and published by Blue Snake Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practiced by millions in China to release stress and maintain robust health, Dragon and Tiger qigong is also used to help prevent and heal cancer and to mitigate the effects of radiation and chemotherapy. It uses simple body movements to accomplish the same chi balancing as acupuncture. Each movement is designed to stimulate not just a single meridian but groups of meridians. In Chinese medicine, the tiger is a metaphor for a strong, healthy liver and powerful muscles, and the dragon is a metaphor for healthy and strong lungs. The Dragon and Tiger form accomplishes three major changes in the body necessary for healing: it releases stagnant chi energy; increases the speed, strength, and evenness of the circulation of chi, blood, and other fluids; and quickly raises the body's energy levels to boost its natural healing capacities.

Book Fox Magic

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Fox Magic written by Jason Read and published by Mandrake. This book was released on 2021-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to ancient legends, thousands of years ago a mysterious being known as the Nine Tail Fox taught her devotees the secrets of witchcraft and alchemy. This witch cult survives to this day and is practiced in many Chinese and Japanese communities in relative secrecy. From her origins with the ancient Wu Shamans and the Tantric dakinis, the author explores this unique and often overlooked form of witchcraft. Learn the history of the Fox Immortal and her influence on Asian politics and history. Investigate the Tantric origins of the Fox Goddess. Learn the secret rituals from the Chinese grimoires that invoke the help and aid of the Fox Immortal as a personal magical tutor. Learn the ways of glamour and fascination taught to devotees of the Fox Temple. Investigate the mysterious tantric rites of the Tachikawa Ryu. Investigate the Mysteries of the white branch of death and the red branch of sexuality. Learn some of the many spells used by the Fox cult of witches. --------- This may be a topic wholly new to the average western reader though it will have familiar elements, after all, all true Mysteries in the true sense of the word have a common thread. Some readers may be familiar with the Lady Fox from various pop-cultural references in Japanese anime or Hong Kong movies and even video games. It is Kitsune, the fox spirit of the west that is most accessible to the average western audience. However the cultus of the Fox goes far further back than her appearance in Japan and Korea, her roots seemingly going as far back as the ancient tantric mysteries of India. I am a practitioner in the magical tradition of Taoism and it was in China that I learned the basics of the Fox Fairy as she is sometimes called. However China is a very conservative country and it seems obvious to me that a lot was implied but never spoken of, or perhaps even forgotten. I ventured into the depths of the mysteries of the Fox Lady and the path took me in many directions and through many synchronicities on that journey. While I preserve the fox tradition as passed to me, I do add some further material, also based on traditions that connect with her 'sadhana' [glossary]. I expect there will be an outcry from some Taoist and Shingon purists since in a sense I am resurrecting the heterodox Shingon cult of the Tachikawa. The logic of this decision will become clear. I am certain this is the correct move. In this way, we rise above the apparent shallowness of the Fox Temple as seen in contemporary Hong Kong for example, where the Fox Fairy has merely become a means to become a more attractive person in the world of film and music. In this book, I am giving the keys to true gnosis of the Path of the Nine-Tailed Fox.

Book Xing Yi Quan Art of Inner Transformation

Download or read book Xing Yi Quan Art of Inner Transformation written by Tom Bisio and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literally translated as "Form-Intention Boxing," Xing Yi Quan emphasizes internal movement within external stillness. Practicing Xing Yi trains the practitioner to actualize the instinctive, hair-trigger reactions of the human body in direct, powerful movements. Xing Yi training focuses on natural, integrated movement, whole body breathing, and the movement of Qi (vital energy), rather than external technique. Rooted in Daoist meditation and longevity practices, and Chinese medical and martial art traditions dating back into antiquity, Xing Yi Quan training draws upon ancient Daoist meditation and inner alchemical practices that transform the body's internal structure, while confronting and dispelling extraneous thoughts to actualize true Intention, thereby providing the practitioner with a comprehensive method of actualizing his or her own inherent potential. Xing Yi Quan: Art of Inner Transformation is not a how-to book. In this fascinating meditation on the art of Xing Yi Quan and its many applications to life and living, author Tom Bisio discusses the many facets of this ancient art: - What is Xing Yi Quan? - The Relationship of Xing Yi Quan to Daoism - Xing Yi Quan and the Five Elements - The Health Benefits of Xing Yi Quan - Xing Yi Quan Training - Suitability of Xing Yi Quan for Different Ages & Lifestyles - Xing Yi Quan as a Martial Art - Xing Yi Quan as a Psycho-Spiritual Path Xing Yi Quan has five key movements, known as The Five Elements, or The Five Fists. Each of the Five Fists has a specific internal action and intention that is simultaneously energy enhancing, combative, and strengthens and harmonizes the internal organs. Practicing the Five Fists cultivates Qi and develops practical fighting skills. In Xing Yi Quan: Art of Inner Transformation Tom Bisio explains how the postures and movements of Xing Yi Quan open the body's energy pathways (meridians), promoting health and well-being, while simultaneously arousing and enlivening the Qi, so that there is no gap between intention and action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JUICE Radical Taiji Energetics describes the entire process of generating maximal internal power (qi) through the slow motion martial art of Chinese Taijiquan (T'ai Chi Ch'uan). All aspects of cultivation and deployment of Taiji's spirit energy are described in accessible terms. This book explains that the great past Taiji masters were not pointing at mere physical structure or mechanical principles in their teachings. Rather, they have left us a legacy of ecstatic internal energy methods that are unwrapped, unraveled, and demystified in this book. The presentation is clear, engaging, and profound, and includes working solo, working with a partner, and mastering the Taiji sword. JUICE is an essential companion for anybody from the raw beginner to the long-term veteran practitioner or teacher of Taiji. Which feels better, crack cocaine or Taiji energy? Why is spirit power (not physical structure) Taiji's true engine of mastery? Whether you're a seasoned player or merely Tai-curious, JUICE will hand you the hidden master keys to TAIJI (T'ai Chi Ch'uan) Contents include: The BRUTE level of internal energy; Taiji's MISSING BASIC for universal energy permeation; The ARC OF STEEL for Taiji's Full Body Activation; The SURGE and the STATE; The real purpose and method of Taiji's PUSH-HANDS exercise; The TAILOR'S TOUCH for supreme sensitivity; YINJECTION and YINFUSION for power emission; The SHELL and its SPIKE, SLIDE, SLURP, and NUDGE power concepts; Taiji's energy meta-tool: the Chinese STRAIGHT SWORD; and much more. JUICE isn't a photo-sequence textbook, illustrating a set of dance poses. JUICE doesn't blandly re-parrot the arcane Chinese philosophy from which Taiji emerged. This book lays out the specific mental "settings" that super-charge any style of Taiji and explains how to use Taiji for personal energy cultivation - with effects that anyone can experience immediately. Whether you currently practice Taiji or you're just thinking of getting into it, you should read JUICE before taking another step.
