Yet, data are still inadequate to serve as guide for a sound fertilizer program on this crop. Fertilizer recommendation for abaca are too general and do not take into accoubt the differences due to variety, soil fertility and climate (Youngberg, 1929; Orolfo, 1975; and Tabora, 1976). One of the earliest attempts to study the growth of abaca under varying soil fertility was done from 1920 to 1921 in the U.P. College of Agriculture by Espino and Viado (1923). Seedlings of unknewn variety were planted in a clay loam soil fertilized with various salts. The authors concluded that in order to promote vigorous growth of young abaca plants and to improve the nutritive conditions of the loam soil generally used for abaca plantations, a moderate application of either potassium sulfate or double superphosphate should be accompanied with a relatively heavy application of ammmmmmmmmmmmmmonium sulfato.

Particular attention is given to the articulation between demographic and economic growth, to levels and determinants of reproductive fertility, to changing disease environments, and to the question of agricultural sustainability and its preconditions. The results call into question some common views regarding the reasons for low population growth, and the relationship between population density and landscape change, in the Southeast Asian past.
