Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The word ‘porridge’ has connotations, which associate it with a term of imprisonment which is how I perceived my formative years. The mere thought of yesterday’s uneaten porridge conjures up a picture of something cold wet and slimy with a possible dried crust on top. There can be but a handful of people for whom the victual conjures up such images and memories as it does for me. Amongst those, I would include a long-forgotten colleague in the navy whilst on a deep sea voyage to the Far East. He was always keen to extol the virtues of the cereal and had been eating it for breakfast for some eight weeks or more when he happened to be collecting rubbish from the galley one day and came across the empty porridge sack. To his horror, the bottom was full of live weevils, looking very energetic. He was promptly sick.”Yesterday’s Porridge is a novel based on Gordon Finn’s experiences as an evacuee during WW2 but seen through the eyes of Francis Tenby who makes a discovery some thirty five years later which alters the course of his life. It is the saga of the fictional lives and relationships of characters that Gordon created, based on people he knew in a foster home. The book will appeal to readers of historical fiction. Gordon is inspired by many authors, including Charles Dickens, Jeffrey Archer and Catherine Cookson.

Book excerpt: Inspired by an Ethiopian folk tale, Gloria's Porridge shows young children how one act can cause a chain reaction and affect other people's lives. When Cat wanted some of Gloria's porridge, he ignored her saying no and ate it all. Gloria then scares Cat who tickles the donkey, who interrupts the bees who then frighten the hen. It is up to the fox then to show the others the importance of not letting this setback slow them down. This re-imagined folk tale tackles difficult ideas like having to take responsibility and overcoming setbacks in a fun and simple manner, ideal for young readers. Toby Newsome's colourful illustrations are inspired by his South African surroundings.

Book The Rhetoric of Videogames as Embodied Practice

Download or read book The Rhetoric of Videogames as Embodied Practice written by Steve Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhetoric of Videogames as Embodied Practice offers a critical reassessment of embodiment and materiality in rhetorical considerations of videogames. Holmes argues that rhetorical and philosophical conceptions of "habit" offer a critical resource for describing the interplay between thinking (writing and rhetoric) and embodiment. The book demonstrates how Aristotle's understanding of character (ethos), habit (hexis), and nature (phusis) can productively connect rhetoric to what Holmes calls "procedural habits": the ways in which rhetoric emerges from its interactions with the dynamic accumulation of conscious and nonconscious embodied experiences that consequently give rise to meaning, procedural subjectivity, control, and communicative agency both in digital game design discourse and the activity of play.

  • Pages : 290 pages

Book excerpt: A lot has changed since Towpath first rolled up its shutters 10 years ago on the Regent’s Canal in Hackney and everything but the toasted cheese sandwich was cooked from home across the bridge. And a lot hasn’t. It is still as much a social experiment as a unique and beloved eatery. What happens when seasonality means you close every year in November, because England’s cold, dark winters are simply inhospitable to hospitality from a little perch beside a shallow, manmade waterway that snakes through East London? What if you don’t offer takeaway coffees in the hopes that people will decide to stay awhile and watch the coots skittering across the water? If you don’t have a phone or a website, because you’d rather people just show up like (hungry) kids at a playground? Towpath is a collection of recipes, stories and photographs capturing the vibrant cafe’s food, community and place throughout the arc of its season – beginning just before the first breath of spring, through the dog days of summer and culminating – with fireworks! – before its painted shutters are rolled down again for winter.
