Book The House of Dr Edwardes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Francis Beeding
  • Publisher : RosettaBooks
  • Release : 2013-12-22
  • ISBN : 079532894X
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The House of Dr Edwardes written by Francis Beeding and published by RosettaBooks. This book was released on 2013-12-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel of psychological terror set in a mental asylum that became the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound starring Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck. From the outset, the air that Beeding’s characters breathe crackles with ominous electricity. This is surely what appealed to Alfred Hitchcock when he found Beeding’s The House of Dr. Edwardes and used it as the inspiration for his unforgettable film Spellbound. The “house” of the title is a lunatic asylum in France and Dr. Edwardes is the head psychiatrist. While Edwardes is held in high esteem, an almost iconic figure in psychiatric circles, there is something clearly amiss. The novel opens with a puzzling, ominous episode in which a patient being transported to the asylum grows agitated as the car bringing him there approaches. The patiently suddenly screams: “the gorge of the devil” and then attacks and kills one of the supervisors, a promising but inexperienced psychiatrist. This opens a position that Dr. Sedgwick accepts, but on arrival, she learns that Dr. Edwardes has taken a leave of absence to calm his nerves. It doesn’t take her long to discover that the house is hardly in order. Unlike Hitchcock’s Spellbound, The House of Dr. Edwardes owes less to Freud, displaying much closer affinities with the brooding, psychological landscapes of Gothic novels of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. The result is a compelling work—part mystery, part modern Gothic.

Book Yesterday S Reflections

Download or read book Yesterday S Reflections written by Albert F. Schmid and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-02-22 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Yesterdays Reflections, author Albert F. Schmid invites us to consider the various holidays that are celebrated throughout the year. He provides interesting facts about each holiday and includes the religious origins of them where relevant because many of our holidays have a religious connection. He also explains important points about the holidays, such as why Easter is always on a Sunday and why Thanksgiving is always on the fourth Thursday in November. In addition, he includes devotionals on topics ranging from Contentment to God Is Where Love Is. Each devotional includes the pertinent Scriptures, a story to illustrate the point being made, and Schmids comments. For example, The Rear View Mirror tells the story of Grace, who remembers her fathers advice for driving in the snow: find a snow plow and follow it. When she encounters a blizzard, she does this; an hour later, the driver stops to make certain she is all right, as he had plowed a large parking lot, was moving on to the next business, and was concerned when he noticed that she was following him. We often become comfortable thinking that we can just follow the snow plow when in truth we need to learn to trust God and let Him lead the way. Yesterdays Reflections is an inspiring collection that reminds us that we are Christs ambassadors and that God expects each of us to live and act as though He is making His appeal through us. The best sermons are not preached; they are lived.

Book Historicism Originalism and the Constitution

Download or read book Historicism Originalism and the Constitution written by Patrick J. Charles and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of history in law is a time honored tradition. Over the years the practice has assumed many forms, including historicism, intentionalism, interpretivist history, law office history, historical narrative, originalism, etc. This book picks up where past commentators have left off. The different historically based approaches to adjudicating constitutional questions are weighed and considered, particularly originalism, and asserts that history in law is legitimate only if it leads to accurate results. The book then purposes an approach to accomplish the objectives of historical accuracy and objectivity, and therefore legitimacy.

Book Through the Valley

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeff Wisdom
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2011-09-14
  • ISBN : 1610973909
  • Pages : 163 pages

Download or read book Through the Valley written by Jeff Wisdom and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-09-14 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A diagnosis of a stage IV cancer is quite a jolt for any family. This is the news that came to Jeff Wisdom, a husband and father in his mid-forties. When the diagnosis of an advanced cancer comes to a family, it can challenge faith and hope. Through the Valley is a biblical-theological reflection on suffering. It details what Scripture says about suffering and what God has promised, both now and in the future. It draws comfort and encouragement from some lessons learned. And it acknowledges and wrestles with some unresolved questions and issues. Jeff's reflections, as one who has endured cancer and chemotherapy, help to bridge Scripture's message and the experience of living with a deadly disease. Excerpts from his wife's journal are included to provide a window into this walk in a dark valley. This book does not address every aspect of the Bible's teaching on suffering, but it makes an important contribution to the topic of the suffering that comes seemingly unexplained as the result of living in a fallen world.
