Book Race Becomes Tomorrow

Download or read book Race Becomes Tomorrow written by Gerald M. Sider and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Race Becomes Tomorrow Gerald M. Sider weaves together stories from his civil rights activism, his youth, and his experiences as an anthropologist to investigate the dynamic ways race has been constructed and lived in America since the 1960s. Tacking between past and present, Sider describes how political power, economic control, and racism inject chaos into the lives of ordinary people, especially African Americans, with surprising consequences. In addition to recounting his years working on voter registration in rural North Carolina, Sider makes connections between numerous issues, from sharecropping and deindustrialization to the recessions of the 1970s and 2008, the rise of migrant farm labor, and contemporary living-wage campaigns. Sider's stories—whether about cockroach races in immigrant homes, degrading labor conditions, or the claims and failures of police violence—provide numerous entry points into gaining a deeper understanding of how race and power both are and cannot be lived. They demonstrate that race is produced and exists in unpredictability, and that the transition from yesterday to tomorrow is anything but certain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic collection of writings on the meditation practice and theory of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection, by the celebrated fourteenth-century scholar and adept Longchen Rabjam (Longchenpa). This classic collection of texts on the meditation practice and theory of Dzogchen presents the Great Perfection through the writings of its supreme authority, the fourteenth-century Tibetan scholar and visionary Longchen Rabjam. The pinnacle of Vajrayana practice in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, Dzogchen embodies a system of training that awakens the intrinsic nature of the mind to reveal its original essence, utterly perfect and free from all duality—buddha nature, or buddhahood itself. In The Practice of Dzogchen, Tulku Thondup translates essential passages from Longchen Rabjam’s voluminous writings to illuminate and clarify this teaching. He also draws on the works of later masters of the tradition, placing Dzogchen in context both in relation to other schools of Buddhism and in relation to the nine-vehicle outline of the Buddhist path described in the Nyingma tradition. This expanded edition includes Counsel for Liberation, Longchenpa’s poetic exhortation to readers to quickly enter the path of liberation, the first step toward the summit of Dzogchen practice.

Oh, this is my friend Harry pictured with me. He has passed now, but he will always be in our hearts. I was born in 1959, I enjoy photography and the natural world. I married a wonderful woman in 1983 and had two beautiful daughters, Hannah and Allison. I am blessed with a wonderful Granddaughter named Lillian Jade. We live in the Michigan, the winter wonderland. It is a beautiful state with much to explore. I discovered that I really enjoyed writing. Mostly I feel a need to write, to express how I view different aspects of life and to try to relate to other people with similar visions and view points. Writing is a great way to express your feelings and create an avenue between you and those around you. I hope you can relate to what I have written in this book, maybe enough to get Book II, when I get around to it.

Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. The Simpleton, which was written in 1968 and could not be performed for political reasons, saw the light of day only in 1994. Its complex games of power and identity, played out among a group of actors, remain entirely contemporary today. Set in a theatre, The Simpleton, in the age-old tradition of Russian drama, tackles the timeless problems of personal freedom and inner independence. It is anything but a simple play with its complicated chameleon-like nature new levels of reality continually moving in to push their predecessors out of the way. The mystification begins at the outset with the future arsonist, the Fop, prowling through the gall grumbling about the presence of spectators... The Simpleton is unlike anything else that was being written in the Soviet Union at the time and aside from its searing thematic content, it is astonishingly inventive in its theatricality.

Book Every War Has Two Losers

Download or read book Every War Has Two Losers written by William Stafford and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2003 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born the year World War I began, acclaimed poet William Stafford (1914-1993) spent World War II in a camp for conscientious objectors. Throughout a century of conflict he remained convinced that wars simply don't work. In his writings, Stafford showed it is possible--and crucial--to think independently when fanatics act, and to speak for reconciliation when nations take sides. He believed it was a failure of imagination to only see two options: to fight or to run away. This book gathers the evidence of a lifetime's commitment to nonviolence, including an account of Stafford's near-hanging at the hands of American patriots. In excerpts from his daily journal from 1951-1991, Stafford uses questions, alternative views of history, lyric invitations, and direct assessments of our political habits to suggest another way than war. Many of these statements are published here for the first time, together with a generous selection of Stafford's pacifist poems and interviews from elusive sources. Stafford provides an alternative approach to a nation's military habit, our current administration's aggressive instincts, and our legacy of armed ventures in Europe, the Pacific, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and beyond.

Book excerpt: KING SOLOMON'S SEAL consists of 63+ pieces, some short, some long, each a story, several containing stories within stories. There is a short introduction, TO THE READER, which informs us by whom it originated and is narrated, if neither the why nor how. There is also an AFTERWORDS, which in some ways puts Finis to these tale-tellings. The time of its narrations is about 1750-1820, the place a small "house of study" perched on a mountain in the eastern part of the Fatra Range in Carpathia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during that century. The materials are diverse in nature, suggestion and purpose, although the reader may and should suppose them meant for us today, even if the language by which the tales are told is a pasticcio of assumed translation into English from some other language, one that relates perhaps to whatever may have been the Yiddish vernacular of those lost times in that faraway place. Some two or three of its fables have appeared in print. KING SOLOMON'S SEAL, playful and mock-serious at once, is meant to entertain. It is a "literary" work, consisting of pseudo-fairy tales, pseudo-folk materials, legends and the like.

Book excerpt: For twenty years, Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine has provided original celebrations of every variety for a secular Jewish community. This book is the product of his experience. It is an affirmation of the ethical view of life that dramatizes, in prose and poetry, what secular and humanistic Jews feel about their heritage. The celebration material in the book is primarily verbal. It is also strongly intellectual and ideological, as well as reflective and sentimental. The style rests on the conviction that celebration events can touch both the mind and the heart; the content rests on the conviction that reason and emotion, inspiration and integrity, humanism and Judaism, are not separate, but complementary.

How would one explain the persistence of poverty and oppression in Africa amidst the superabundance of natural and human resources? In their search for answers, the poets not only chastise but also to point to a verdant and promising future – free of corruption, greed, violence and neo-colonialism. Other themes covered in the anthology include gender, identity and family ties.
