Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American evangelicals are known for focusing on the family, but the Quiverfull movement intensifies that focus in a significant way. Often called "Quiverfull" due to an emphasis on filling their "quivers" with as many children as possible (Psalm 127:5), such families are distinguishable by their practices of male-only leadership, homeschooling, and prolific childbirth. Their primary aim is "multigenerational faithfulness" - ensuring their descendants maintain Christian faith for many generations. Many believe this focus will lead to the Christianization of America in the centuries to come. Quivering Families is a first of its kind project that employs history, ethnography, and theology to explore the Quiverfull movement in America. The book considers a study of the movement's origins, its major leaders and institutions, and the daily lives of its families. Quivering Families argues that despite the apparent strangeness of their practice, Quiverfull is a thoroughly evangelical and American phenomenon. Far from offering a countercultural vision of the family, Quiverfull represents an intensification of longstanding tendencies. The movement reveals the weakness of evangelical theology of the family and underlines the need for more critical and creative approaches.

Isiah Gillis and Claudius Reynar are twins in every sense of the word. No one can tell them apart, yet they're not related. Since meeting, they've learned that they've become the subject of a legend, something neither of them wanted. Their first day warden, Gabriel, tries to kill Claudius and Isiah by turning their True One, Mitch, into a weapon against them. Instead, Mitch now shares his body with Remi, a powerful demon lord who enters their lives—a demon lord who claims them for his own. Not everyone is happy that the legend has been fulfilled, and they will do everything in their power to tear apart the strong bond the four men possess. Laramie realizes he has to separate from Mitch or risk losing one of his mates so completely that it could break them all. When old and new enemies alike step forward to destroy who they are, Isiah, Mitch, Claudius and Laramie gather family and friends to fight in the war to save them all. Can things be set right before evil intentions win?

Book Pudd nhead Wilson and Other Tales

Download or read book Pudd nhead Wilson and Other Tales written by Mark Twain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-06-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) was Mark Twain's last serious work of fiction, and perhaps the only real novel that he ever produced. Written in a more sombre vein than his other Mississippi writings, the novel reveals the sinister forces that Mark Twain felt to be threatening the American dream. In spite of a plot which includes child swapping, palmistry, and a pair of Italian twins, this astringent work also raises the serious issue of racial differences. This volume also includes two other late works `Those Extraordinary Twins' and `The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Pudd nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins

Download or read book Pudd nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins written by Mark Twain and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two narratives published together in The Tragedy of Pudd’nhead Wilson and the Comedy Those Extraordinary Twins are overflowing with spectacular events. Twain shows us conjoined twins, babies exchanged in the cradle, acts of cross-dressing and racial masquerade, duels, a lynching, and a murder mystery. Pudd’head Wilson tells the story of babies, one of mixed race and the other white, exchanged in their cradles, while Those Extraordinary Twins is a farcical tale of conjoined twins. Although the stories were long viewed as flawed narratives, their very incongruities offer a fascinating portrait of key issues—race, disability, and immigration—facing the United States in the final decades of the nineteenth century. Hsuan Hsu’s introduction traces the history of literary critics’ response to these works, from the confusion of Twain’s contemporaries to the keen interest of current scholars. Extensive historical appendices provide contemporary materials on race discourse, legal contexts, and the composition and initial reception of the texts.

Book excerpt: Christian Childbirth by Marianne Manley RN, CNM contains birth stories written by Christians for Christians and provides information related to childbearing and beyond from a Christian perspective. Christians are encouraged to trust God at this time. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? . . . It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us Romans 8:32-34 (KJV). An anthology of birth stories which depict various scenarios which may be encountered in natural childbirth follows a brief description of how Marianne became a Christian midwife. The many true stories and photos will give the reader a glimpse into the thoughts and challenges the mothers faced and how they overcame them and succeeded in a natural delivery. In the handbook section, Marianne shares what she does as a midwife. She provides information on early pregnancy, priorities, time management, warning signs, common discomforts, praying for loved ones, diet tips, recipes, exercise, sex during pregnancy, labor and birth advice, pain management, supplies needed, pros and cons of water birth, cord management, what to do when the water breaks before labor, and emergency childbirth instruction for husbands. Post-delivery information include how to avoid hemorrhaging after the birth, the Ten Commandments for the postpartum mother, getting rid of belly fat, breast feeding, the circumcision decision, and newborn care. There are also guidelines for feeding on Gods Word, loving our husbands and children, being a godly wife and mother, homeschooling with a new baby, child training tips, speaking gently, avoiding gossip, and much more. Christian Childbirth is a great resource for midwives, doulas, or personal maternity care especially for those desiring a Christ-centered birth.
