Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2024 YALSA Top Ten Great Graphic Novel for Teens • An NPR Best Book of 2023 • A 2023 NCSS Notable Social Studies Book "Inspiring and exciting, powerful and very poignant" —Anderson Cooper ★ "[A] gripping narrative, told with great immediacy" —Horn Book, starred review ★ "Highly recommended." ―School Library Journal, starred review “A powerful true story that demonstrates the power of one young person determined to change the world” — Victoria Jamieson, author of Roller Girl A teenage boy risks his life to tell the truth in this gripping graphic memoir by youth activist Muhammad Najem and CNN producer Nora Neus. Muhammad Najem was only eight years old when the war in Syria began. He was thirteen when his beloved Baba, his father, was killed in a bombing while praying. By fifteen, Muhammad didn’t want to hide anymore—he wanted to act. He was determined to reveal what families like his were enduring in Syria: bombings by their own government and days hiding in dark underground shelters. Armed with the camera on his phone and the support of his family, he started reporting on the war using social media. He interviewed other kids like him to show what they hope for and dream about. More than anything, he did it to show that Syrian kids like his toddler brother and infant sister, are just like kids in any other country. Despite unimaginable loss, Muhammad was always determined to document the humanity of the Syrian people. Eventually, the world took notice. This tenderly illustrated graphic memoir is told by Muhammad himself along with CNN producer Nora Neus, who helped break Muhammad’s story and bring his family’s plight to an international audience.

Download or read book The Type Writer Girl written by Grant Allen and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2003-12-19 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juliet Appleton is an officer’s daughter who is forced to make her own way in the world after her father’s death. Having been trained in typewriting and shorthand, she obtains employment at a law office, only to find that she cannot bear to work with her unpleasant colleagues and employer. Juliet possesses some of the characteristics of the infamous "New Woman": she has attended Girton College, she smokes cigarettes, and she travels the countryside on her bicycle. After various adventures, Juliet finds a new opportunity as a type-writer girl for a publishing company. She falls in love with her employer, and he with her, but complications inevitably ensue. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Canadian-born Grant Allen was a prolific professional author of popular science texts on evolution as well as a fiction writer. The Type-Writer Girl (1897) is one of only two novels he wrote under a female pseudonym, possibly to lend credibility to his first-person female narrator. The Type-Writer Girl invokes tensions typical of the fin de siècle concerning evolution, technology, and the role of women. This Broadview edition provides a reliable text at a very reasonable price. It contains textual notes but no appendices.

Book excerpt: ′The ultimate book on the creative skills of journalism′ - Writing Magazine ′Useful and timely... it is refreshing to discover a book so overtly designed to inspire students to think about what can make writing good - or even great.′ - Media International Australia This is a book about the art of writing for newspapers and magazine, but doesn′t look at punctuation, spelling and the stylistic conventions of ′everyday′ journalism. Instead, Good Writing For Journalists presents extended examples of writing which are powerful, memorable, colourful or funny. Each piece will be contextualised and analysed encouraging readers to learn from the best practitioners. This book will inspire those who want to make their writing individual and memorable. Along the way the major elements of non-fiction writing will be introduced, in chapters organised by genre - profile writing, reportage, news analysis, investigation, sports writing, personal and opinion columns and ′lifestyle′ among them. Phillip′s book sees itself as a natural successor to Wolfe & Johnson′s seminal The New Journalism (1975). By adopting a larger sweeping and tailoring itself for the contemporary journalistic arena, this book will be an essential purchase for the discerning journalist and journalism student.

Book I Am a Japanese Writer

  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book I Am a Japanese Writer written by Dany Laferrière and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2011 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A devilishly intelligent new novel by the internationally bestselling author and Prix Mï??dicis winner. A black writer from Montreal has found the perfect title for his next book: I Am a Japanese Writer. His publisher gives him an advance on the strength of the title alone. The problem is, he can't seem to write a word of it. He can scarcely summon the energy to put pen to paper, and so he nurses his writer's block by taking long baths, re-reading the works of Japanese poet Basho and engaging in amorous intrigues with rising pop star Midori and her entourage of vampire girls. For the writer, though, the title isn't just a title: he really does believe he is a Japanese writer. He makes this declaration in a mall, and, the next thing he knows, he's an international celebrity. The book becomes a cult phenomenon, even though he still hasn't written a word of it. In Japan, it sets off a cultural revolution. A Japanese writer even publishes a book called I Am a Malagasy Writer. On the nightly news, a Japanese officer declares, "I Am a Korean Soldier." No wonder a pair of attachï??s from the Japanese embassy has been following our hero around. At first, he is delighted to discover his celebrity. But things quickly go wrong. Part postmodern fantasy, part Kafkaesque nightmare and part travelogue to the inner reaches of the self, I Am a Japanese Writer calls into question everything we think we know about what-and who-makes a work of art.
