Download or read book Flood Risk Management in the People s Republic of China written by Yoshiaki Kobayashi and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents a shift in the People's Republic of China from flood control depending on structural measures to integrated flood management using both structural and non-structural measures. The core of the new concept of integrated flood management is flood risk management. Flood risk management is based on an analysis of flood hazard, exposure to flood hazard, and vulnerability of people and property to danger. It is recommended that people learn to live with flood risks, gaining and promoting a clear understanding of flood risks, quantifying and modifying the flood hazard, regulating exposure to the hazard, and reducing their vulnerability to danger.

This book was released on 2020-11-21 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores water resources management issues in China and possible solutions. It analyzes a wide range of general and specific topics, providing case studies and a balanced review of the past and present situation as well as future developments. The book begins with a general introduction and an overview of hydrology, water resources, and development issues in China. It then presents a management framework, including a management system, management institutions, river basin management, water pricing, water rights, and groundwater management, and discusses its implementation, covering water resources allocation and regulation in the Yellow River, integrated water affair management reforms, and agricultural water management in northern China. The last section focuses on the current reforms and hot topics, with strong emphasis on stringent water resource strategies applied to the river and lake principle system, recycled water use and water resources asset management, as well as climate change impacts, and concludes with a summary of the many changes in the water sector in China and a look at the road ahead and the areas that still need to be reformed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a history of the partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the People's Republic of China (PRC) spanning three decades. Since joining ADB in 1986, the PRC has evolved from being a poor and predominantly agrarian economy to an upper-middle-income manufacturing and services powerhouse that has become a leading international source of financial, technical, and knowledge cooperation. This historically unprecedented transformation has shaped every aspect of the ADB–PRC relationship. The successful partnership owes much to the PRC's unique approach to developing its economy, and offers valuable lessons for other countries and development partners.

Download or read book Dryland Ecosystems written by Frank Radstake and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Republic of China (PRC) suffers from some large-scale land degradation problems, posing a significant threat to the lives of local residents and to the future economic welfare of the nation. The dryland areas of the western PRC, which cover approximately 40% of the country's land area, contain some of the most severely degraded land in the world. With only about 7% of the world's farmland and 6% of the world's annual water runoff, the PRC must feed 22% of the world's population. With the assistance of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Asian Development Bank, the PRC government established the PRC-GEF Partnership on Land Degradation in Dryland Ecosystems to address land degradation issues, reduce poverty, restore dryland ecosystems, and conserve biodiversity through an effective integrated ecosystem management (IEM) approach.

Download or read book The Yellow River written by David A. Pietz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flowing through the heart of the North China Plain—home to 200 million people—the Yellow River sustains one of China’s core regions. Yet this vital water supply has become highly vulnerable in recent decades, with potentially serious repercussions for China’s economic, social, and political stability. The Yellow River is an investigative expedition to the source of China’s contemporary water crisis, mapping the confluence of forces that have shaped the predicament that the world’s most populous nation now faces in managing its water reserves. Chinese governments have long struggled to maintain ecological stability along the Yellow River, undertaking ambitious programs of canal and dike construction to mitigate the effects of recurrent droughts and floods. But particularly during the Maoist years the North China Plain was radically re-engineered to utilize every drop of water for irrigation and hydroelectric generation. As David A. Pietz shows, Maoist water management from 1949 to 1976 cast a long shadow over the reform period, beginning in 1978. Rapid urban growth, industrial expansion, and agricultural intensification over the past three decades of China’s economic boom have been realized on a water resource base that was acutely compromised, with effects that have been more difficult and costly to overcome with each passing decade. Chronicling this complex legacy, The Yellow River provides important insight into how water challenges will affect China’s course as a twenty-first-century global power.

Download or read book Prediction of the Effects of a Flood Control Project on a Meandering Stream written by D. Michael Gee and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arkansas River between Pueblo, Colorado, and John Martin Dam, a distance of about 125 river miles, is an alluvial, sand-bed river. It meanders between bluffs in a flood plain about one mile in width. During geologic time the downstream (eastern) portion of this reach has been migrating southward due to heavy sediment loads from northern tributaries. A local flood control project is being planned for the town of La Junta, which is in the downstream one-third of this reach. A study was undertaken to evaluate the future performance of various flood control alternatives with regard to channel stability, sediment movement, and project maintenance. The alternatives considered were various channel and levee configurations. Evaluations were based on both long-term (100-year period) and short-term (single flood event) hydrologic scenarios. The primary tool used in this study was the movable boundary mathematical model HEC-6 entitled 'Scour and Deposition in Rivers and Reservoirs.' The hydrologic and sediment regimes of the study reach are complex due to four tributaries and eleven major irrigation diversions. This paper describes development of representative data for the long-term analysis, operation of the model, calibration and simulation strategies employed, interpretation of model results, and computational aspects of this application.
