Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Balance Wheel: A Condensed History of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1880-1920 The Woman's Home Missionary Society has been as a balance wheel to all races of people under the Stars and Stripes. It has taught: their boys and girls how to read and write and work and worship God. It has taught the Negro girl to cook, sew, make beds, sweep, and set a house in order; the Negro boy to plant and plow and rebuild his cabin. It has shown the Indian how to irrigate the land, and has coaxed him from a Wigwam to a cottage. It has brought bright-eyed Spanish American girls from adobe huts to its spacious boarding-schools. For forty years this potent agency of Americanization has been at work. It has placed Christian social settlements all the way from the Arctic town of Nome to El Paso, Texas, the gateway, to old Mexico; hospitals and dispensaries from Boston to Albuquerque; Industrial Homes from San Juan, Porto Rico, to Tacoma, Washington. Its missions are planted as far west from San Francisco as Maine is east. Boats have edged their way along the northwestern coast laden with wood and glass and stone for its Industrial Homes. Freight cars have travelled from state to state with boxes and barrels and supplies for its orphanages, Homesand schools. The genius of Christian American womanhood is recorded in the history of these forty years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years' History: Of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church 1880 1900 Not to introduce a Society known throughout the United States; nor to indorse a movement which appeals to every philanthropic impulse; nor yet to commend this volume did I accept the invitation to prefix a few paragraphs to this "Twenty Years' History." But I complied primarily because it affords an opportunity to emphasize the increasing need of work similar to that which has heretofore been done by this Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Her Story: History of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Evangelical Association The thrilling and suggestive story of the rise of this Society, its struggle for recognition, the patient labor, quiet planning, and importunate praying of its promoters, the steady progress and success of their cause, is beautifully told in the following pages in the graphic style of one of their own best and most facile writers, Mrs. H. Ennett. It was with her a labor of love, involving patient research and much precious time. But we believe the work will be richly rewarded in blessing to others, and this book will become a valuable part of our denominational literature. It ought to have an extensive circle of readers. Book Following the Great Command

Download or read book Following the Great Command written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Following the Great Command: Being the Jubilee Number Forty-Ninth Annual Report of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church Ore things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of was M never truer than in the history of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. The Slogan of Two cents a week and a prayer which was given at first as the condition of membership was as faithful in the second part as in the first, and though the prayer was never written into either constitution or by-laws, it was for many. Years universally mentioned and insisted upon in soliciting new members, and prayer has been a distinctive feature of the work and a vital source of success all through the years. How many women, in the quiet of their homes, send up a petition at the noon hour. For the missionaries and the home workers! When the Jubilee Campaign was started in 1915 all realized that without much intercessory prayer the aims of the Jubilee would not be reached, not that God needed to be pled with, but that those who prayed might get a clearer view of their part in the work. So the League of Intercessors was inaugurated that special thought should be made throughout our constituency for the success of the movement. Pledge cards were provided, stating the purpose to give time from day to day to quiet, unhurried thought about God and His world-wide purpose and to definite prayer for the progress of His kingdom. These Signed cards were to be sent to the President Emeritus, who gladly took charge of them. They came in large numbers at first but there has been a falling off during the past year. We are, however, thankful to be able to make known the fact that over thirteen thousand women have enrolled themselves as members of the League of Intercessors since October, 1914. The increase in number of missionaries and in money shows that God's promises have been kept. From time to time various subjects for special prayer have been suggested in the Friend. If all of our members had joined in these definite prayers for the progress of His Kingdom What greater success might have been wrought!
