Book excerpt: For almost eight decades, the world has been fascinated by the tragic fate of the Romanovs -- the last Tsar and Tsarina who were murdered, with their five children, by the Bolsheviks in 1918. With the advent of perestroika and the crumbling of Soviet rule, the opportunity arose to delve into hitherto forbidden archives buried deep within the crypt of secrecy that was the Soviet system. This book is the product of years of work to shed more light on the tragic deaths in Yekaterinburg all those years ago. As well as unearthing material which sheds more light on their deaths, it provides an enthralling description of the last Romanovs as people. With hundreds of unique and historic photographs from the personal albums of Tsar Nikolai -- an early camera enthusiast -- and the whole family, here at last it's possible to put flesh on the bones of those tragic, historic skeletons unearthed from their resting place in the Russian soil.

Book Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights

Download or read book Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights written by Council of Europe Staff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume contains the Report of the European Commission of Human Rights on the "Greek Case" (Applications No. 3321/67, Den mark v. Greece; No. 3322/67, Norway v. Greece; No. 3323/67, Sweden v. Greece; No. 3344/67, Netherlands v. Greece) and the Resolution DH (70) 1 adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 15 April 1970 relating to this case. These four applications, which were filed with the Commission of Human Rights in September 1967, alleged that the Greek Government which had come into power in April of that year had violated its obliga tions under the European Convention on Human Rights. They referred to the suspension of certain articles of the Greek Constitution and other legislative measures and administrative practices; they alleged that, re gardless of any individual or specific injury, these acts affected the cor responding Articles of the Convention on Human Rights. The Applicant Governments also submitted that the derogation made by the Greek Government under Article 15 of the Convention (which permits a government to take measures derogating from its obligations under the Convention in time of war or public emergency) was not justified. The Commission on 2 October 1967, decided to give priority to these cases and, after hearing the submissions of the parties on 23 and 24 January 1968, it declared the applications admissible on 24 January 1968. The decision on admissibility was published in this Yearbook Vol. 11, pages 690 to 728.

Book The Principle of Solidarity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eva Kassoti
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-02-13
  • ISBN : 9462655758
  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book The Principle of Solidarity written by Eva Kassoti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the principle of solidarity in international and EU law. Although the concept is regularly invoked in international and EU legal and policy debates alike, its meaning, nature and functions, as well as normative contours still remain nebulous. The contributions in this volume reflect on the legal trajectory of solidarity in international and EU law and offer unique insights into the evolution and status of the principle in different fields of international and EU law. By doing so, the book also serves as a springboard for answering broader questions pertaining to what the stage of development of this principle may imply for the two legal orders and their interaction. As the chapters of this book show, the debate on solidarity is premised on conflicting visions regarding the values underpinning the international legal order as well as the self-interest or community-oriented driving forces behind States’ action at the international level. The regional (EU law) perspective offers a new lens through which to revisit classic questions pertaining to the nature of modern international law and to assess its continuing relevance in a world of regional organizations presenting different visions (and levels) of co-operation. This book, the second volume to appear in the Global Europe Series, will appeal to international and EU law researchers and policy-makers alike with an interest in the nature and function of the principle of solidarity in international and EU law. Eva Kassoti is Senior researcher in EU and International Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague, The Netherlands and the Academic Co-ordinator of CLEER. Narin Idriz is Researcher in EU Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague, The Netherlands.
