Book St Marks Is Dead The Many Lives of America s Hippest Street

Download or read book St Marks Is Dead The Many Lives of America s Hippest Street written by Ada Calhoun and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant narrative history of three hallowed Manhattan blocks—the epicenter of American cool. St. Marks Place in New York City has spawned countless artistic and political movements. Here Frank O’Hara caroused, Emma Goldman plotted, and the Velvet Underground wailed. But every generation of miscreant denizens believes that their era, and no other, marked the street’s apex. This idiosyncratic work of reportage tells the many layered history of the street—from its beginnings as Colonial Dutch Director-General Peter Stuyvesant’s pear orchard to today’s hipster playground—organized around those pivotal moments when critics declared “St. Marks is dead.” In a narrative enriched by hundreds of interviews and dozens of rare images, St. Marks native Ada Calhoun profiles iconic characters from W. H. Auden to Abbie Hoffman, from Keith Haring to the Beastie Boys, among many others. She argues that St. Marks has variously been an elite address, an immigrants’ haven, a mafia warzone, a hippie paradise, and a backdrop to the film Kids—but it has always been a place that outsiders call home. This idiosyncratic work offers a bold new perspective on gentrification, urban nostalgia, and the evolution of a community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The perfect Christmas gift for anyone interested in the historical background behind the birth of Jesus of Nazareth." — Robert J. Hutchinson, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible, The Dawn of Christianity, and Searching for Jesus. "Utterly refreshing and encouraging." — Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Martin Luther "The best book I know about the Magi." — Sir Colin John Humphreys, Ph.D., author of The Mystery of the Last Supper Modern biblical scholars tend to dismiss the Christmas story of the “wise men from the East” as pious legend. Matthew’s gospel offers few details, but imaginative Christians filled out the story early on, giving us the three kings guided by a magical star who join the adoring shepherds in every Christmas crèche. For many scholars, then, there is no reason to take the gospel story seriously. But are they right? Are the wise men no more than a poetic fancy? In an astonishing feat of detective work, Dwight Longenecker makes a powerful case that the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem really happened. Piecing together the evidence from biblical studies, history, archeology, and astronomy, he goes further, uncovering where they came from, why they came, and what might have happened to them after eluding the murderous King Herod. In the process, he provides a new and fascinating view of the time and place in which Jesus Christ chose to enter the world. The evidence is clear and compelling. The mysterious Magi from the East were in all likelihood astrologers and counselors from the court of the Nabatean king at Petra, where the Hebrew messianic prophecies were well known. The “star” that inspired their journey was a particular planetary alignment—confirmed by computer models—that in the astrological lore of the time portended the birth of a Jewish king. The visitors whose arrival troubled Herod “and all Jerusalem with him” may not have been the turbaned oriental kings of the Christmas carol, but they were real, and by demonstrating that the wise men were no fairy tale, Mystery of the Magi demands a new level of respect for the historical claims of the gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Mark's Sixtieth Anniversary 1850-1910: A Discourse Delivered in St. Mark's Church, Brooklyn, Sunday, December 18, 1910 "I thank my God upon all my remembrance of you, always in every supplication of mine in behalf of you all making my supplication with joy, for your fellowship in furtherance of the Gospel from the first day until now; being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ. - Philippians, 1:3-6. The Epistle to the Philippians is not doctrinal statement, but personal tenderness. It is an outburst of the heart, springing from the deepest inward need of loving fellowship. It unites exquisite sympathy with courageous faith. The words from a Roman dungeon, may instruct us in review and outlook after sixty years of our Brooklyn church's life. With reverent gratitude St. Paul cherishes devout and joyous reminiscence. Memory had a wide scope in these words, "from the first day until now." There are concrete facts, local references. Philippi was on the great Roman road from Europe to Asia Minor, about nine miles from the sea, and backed by a mountain range. Here St. Paul had preached Christ without encountering the usual opposition. There were cities larger and more renowned, where his discourses roused the most virulent abuse, and where the most tactful missionary efforts were baffled. But it was different in Philippi. There one did not find the philosophic scorn of Athens, nor the mob violence of Thessalonica. The Philippians were of the middle class, earning, in most cases honestly, their own living. Recall the peculiar circumstances of the first three converts. Lydia was by birth an Asiatic, engaged in a necessary and lucrative trade, a seller of purple, which may mean a dyer or a dressmaker. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible of St. Mark: St. Mark's Church, the Altar Throne of Venice The Religion of the old Venetians, as disclosed in St. Mark's Church, was altogether Biblical. Originally there was little inscribed upon its walls and domes in sculpture, text, and mosaic, that was not drawn directly and wholly from the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. It is true that in later times some few mosaics and inscriptions of a different character were introduced into the church, but they were not sufficient to impair to any extent its character, and even these, I am glad to say, are being gradually removed, and facsimiles of the original ones, the cartoons of which have been fortunately preserved, are being put up in their places. St. Mark's is thus gradu ally regaining its pristine purity and simplicity. Because, then, of this, its Scriptural character, I have called it the Bible of St. Mark; and I have made this the main title of my book, as it is the point of view from which I have chiefly.
