Book excerpt: Reviews: The sardonic personality of the author is reflected in his writing. A treasure trove of information has brightly illuminated the frame of reference of the characters. I loved the book; it's an easy read and yet the author offers original insights into our social and cultural idiosyncrasies. Like they say in our profession - 'strongly recommend' - R Srinivasan, Head of Equity, SBI Mutual Funds A lucid, and at times provocative narration of the life of an investment professional with some desi colour that provides a ringside view of an exhilarating milieu in Indian economy. The unique style of the author makes each character in the story come alive. - Mahesh Patil, Co-Chief Investment Officer, Birla Mutual Fund About the book: When Yayaati, a pre-millennial ‘small-towner’ takes up a stockbroking job in Mumbai after his MBA, little does he know what the future has in store for him. The turmoil and turbulence of the Indian stock market, narrated by Yayaati (named after a character from the Mahabharat) takes you through a roller coaster of emotions. Fiction and reality intertwine, and the reader experiences what it must have been like to be in a high-voltage, electrifying environment that changes and influences the protagonist’s life in myriad ways. Power, sex, drugs—it’s all here, and more. And at its height, Yayaati throws it all away. Or does he? Yayaati is not a hero, but he is not a villain either. The author shows a mirror to ‘The Yayaati Generation’ and forces them to think about the choices they have made. Most of the character names are allegorical, some ironically so. At a higher level, the text is a treasure hunt with varied references buried within. The author attempts to both amuse and annoy the reader; sometimes simultaneously.

Not only in India but in the entire world, women are aching for a ray of hope to illuminate their world and remove the darkness spread in their life. All they need is courage, determination, and continuous effort. Santosh Srivastava’s book, ‘Mujhe Janam Do Maa’ is a profound, strong, and well-researched expression of this effort. It is a compilation of articles written by her over six years of research. These articles were published as episodes in one of the columns of Samarlok magazine called Angana. Her six years of hard work and thorough research are visible in this book. Every article in this book compels the reader to think and exposes the aspects of women’s issues which expose the irrationality of the patriarchal society. Each article in this book exposes the helplessness, pain, and deteriorating condition of women’s life layer by layer through examples and descriptions. - Ravindra Katyayan Hindi author, Mumbai

Book Languages and Literary Cultures in Hyderabad

Download or read book Languages and Literary Cultures in Hyderabad written by Kousar J Azam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is great interest in recent scholarship in the study of metropolitan cultures in India as evident from the number of books that have appeared on cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Though Hyderabad has a rich archive of history scattered in many languages, very few attempts have been made to bring this scholarship together. The papers in this volume bring together this scholarship at one place. They trace the contribution of different languages and literary cultures to the multicultural mosaic that is the city of Hyderabad How it has acquired this uniqueness and how it has been sustained is the subject matter of literary cultures in Hyderabad. This work attempts to trace some aspects of the history of major languages practiced in the city. It also reviews the contribution of the various linguistic groups that have added to the development not just of varied literary cultures, but also to the evolution of an inclusive Hyderabadi culture. The present volume, it is hoped, will enthuse both younger and senior scholars and students to take a fresh look at the study of languages and literary cultures as they have evolved in India's cities and add to the growing scholarship of metropolitan cultures in India.

It is based on an episode in the Mahabharata, where Yayati, one of the ancestors of the Pandavas, is given the curse of premature old age by his father-in-law, Shukracharya, who is incensed by Yayati's infidelity. Yayati could redeem this curse only if someone was willing to exchange his youth with him. It is his son, Pooru, who finally offers to do this for his father. The play examines the moment of crisis that Pooru's decision sparks, and the dilemma it presents for Yayati, Pooru, and Pooru's young wife.

Book GITA for Gen A to Z

Download or read book GITA for Gen A to Z written by Ram Prakash Singhal and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 905 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gita leads us from spiritual infancy to maturity, impulsive irrationality to intelligent rationalism, and agitation to tranquility. ‘G-OO-D’ contains two ‘O’s between ‘G’, the God, and ‘D’, the Devil. First ‘O’ near ‘G’ denotes Obeisance to God; and second ‘O’, near Devil, denotes Obfuscation. Eliminate Obfuscation from life to see God in everything ‘Good’. Ego and prejudice are the earplugs that stop us from listening to inner voice of God. Enjoy the 3 D film of life by wearing spectacle of Anaasakti, the indifference. Orthodoxy is the peel of a banana whose pulp is Dharm. We shouldn’t set foot on the peel and slip into gutter but relish soul-nourishing pulp. Our senses must follow our commands like the ‘Genie’ of Aladdin’s lamp. The best batsman defends his wicket by driving every ball to boundary but the less skilled runs to score; and the least skilled is bowled out. Dharm appears as the ferocious tiger Richard Parker in the film ‘Life of Pi’. Initially Pi struggles to save himself from tiger; then it suddenly dawns on him that the tiger is an indispensible anchor of his life in the boat. His simple attitudinal change saves the beast and himself.
