Book A Yankee Trader in the Gold Rush

Download or read book A Yankee Trader in the Gold Rush written by Franklin Agustus Buck and published by . This book was released on 1930 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A native of Maine, Franklin Agustus Buck (1826-1909) was working in New York City when he heard of the gold strikes and set out for California in January 1849. A Yankee trader in the gold rush (1930) contains Buck's letters to his sister in Maine. They chronicle his first dozen years in the West: a voyage round the Horn to San Francisco; prospecting and storekeeping in various gold camps and the towns of Sacramento, Downieville, North Fork, Marysville, and Weaverville; and a trading voyage to Tahiti and Hawaii. Politics interest Buck, and he pays close attention to the issues in the 1852 election, local secessionist debate, and the impact of the Civil War. In the 1860s, Buck turns to agriculture, raising fruit and cattle at farms in Weaverville, Oakville, and Red Bluffs. Discoveries of silver lead him back to mining at Treasure City, Meadow Valley, and Pioche, Nevada.

Book The United States and Africa

Download or read book The United States and Africa written by Peter Duignan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-04-24 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the reciprocal relationship between Africa and North America from the seventeenth-century slave trade onwards, two leading authorities in the field provide a major revision to traditional colonial African history as well as to US history. Departing from prior accounts that tended to emphasise only the role of the colonial metropoles in developing Africa, the authors show how American pioneers - missionaries, traders, prospectors, miners, engineers, scientists, and others - have helped to shape Africa. They also point to the equally important impact made by Africa on the United States through trade and immigration, and through the influence of Africans on the arts and agriculture, among other facets of American life. In a study of exceptionally broad scope, the authors devote particular attention to the development of United States policy regarding Africa, the impact of private enterprise, the operation of governmental lobbies, the administration of foreign aid, and the involvement of Africa in the Cold War.

His resolve and skills are tested when he must transition from the F-14 to the F/A-18C Hornet and then to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. He must balance his passion for flying and the demands of his new assignment with his new responsibilities as husband and father. The ugly spectre of terrorism looms large as the Nimitz plys the world's seas from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, seeking to project American sea power in an unstable world. Fancy finds himself on the cutting edge of today's headlines along with all of the men and women of the Nimitz and the ships of her battle group.
