Book Notions of a Yankee Parson Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notions of a Yankee Parson Classic Reprint written by George L. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notions of a Yankee Parson A venture, even so unlike a sermon as the present little hazard, by a parson, without opening up the text, would be like a house without a doorstep. Notions extend from conceptions of the Milky Way to devices for milking a cow; from the layout of the golden streets to carving a wedding chest. "Yankee Notions" suggests also dry goods, in dealing with which the New England Yankee is a proverbial expert; hence, perhaps, the idea is apt in a title for this book. The occupations of a Yankee parson are so manifold, - from starting plants for the Paradise gardens to planting potatoes, from setting the pace for adolescent saints to setting hens, that you might possibly imagine that a seasoned Yankee parson would have a few notions if his mind has not gone altogether to seed. These notions, now coyly offered, may be caught up for a moment, or left to wither like so many other tender things in this frosty world. Whatever their fate, the parson with becoming humility cherishes the alluring hope that no pulpit tone will stale them, that while some of the topics discussed are serious, the treatment will not be found monotonous or sanctimonious, that someone, somewhere, may find in the varied bill of fare a crumb of pleasure or a relish of healthy cheer. Book Love and Friendship Or Yankee Notions

Download or read book Love and Friendship Or Yankee Notions written by A. B. Lindsley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love and Friendship; Or, Yankee Notions: A Comedy, in Three Acts The following piece (designed for a farce, but Being considered too long has been printed as a comedy) was written, to pass away time, more than two years ago when I was several hundred miles removed from the precinct of any theatre, and but nineteen years of age. A copy was taken of it about sixteen months since, and considerable additions were made; after which it was read by two or three of my friends, who requested to see it published. Should the pedantic critic graciously condescend to glance the eye of disapprobation over these pages, he may recollect or let it alone, that they are the first, the maiden production of a partially educated youth, who courts not his favor and shall never fear his impotent malevolence. Download or read book Imagining New England written by Joseph A. Conforti and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Say "New England" and you likely conjure up an image in the mind of your listener: the snowy woods or stone wall of a Robert Frost poem, perhaps, or that quintessential icon of the region--the idyllic white village. Such images remind us that, as Joseph Conforti notes, a region is not just a territory on the ground. It is also a place in the imagination. This ambitious work investigates New England as a cultural invention, tracing the region's changing identity across more than three centuries. Incorporating insights from history, literature, art, material culture, and geography, it shows how succeeding generations of New Englanders created and broadcast a powerful collective identity for their region through narratives about its past. Whether these stories were told in the writings of Frost or Harriet Beecher Stowe, enacted in historical pageants or at colonial revival museums, or conveyed in the pages of a geography textbook or Yankee magazine, New Englanders used them to sustain their identity, revising them as needed to respond to the shifting regional landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one hundred fifty years ago, champions of women's rights in the United States, Britain, France, and Germany formed the world's earliest international feminist movement. Joyous Greetings is the first book to tell their story. From Seneca Falls in upstate New York to the barricades of revolutionary Paris, from the Crystal Palace in London to small towns in the German Rhineland, early feminists united to fight for the cause of women. At the height of the Victorian period, they insisted their sex deserved full political equality, called for a new kind of marriage based on companionship, claimed the right to divorce and to get custody of their children, and argued that an unjust economic system forced women into poorly paid jobs. They rejected the traditional view that women's subordination was preordained, natural, and universal. In restoring these daring activists' achievements to history, Joyous Greetings passes on their inspiring and empowering message to today's new generation of feminists.

Book Henry Irving Actor and Manager

Download or read book Henry Irving Actor and Manager written by William Archer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving, Actor and Manager: A Critical Study Chapter in his career. Epoch-making it will hardly be. His tour is not likely to produce much effect, for better or worse, on Mr. Irving's art. Travelling with his own company, his own scenery, his own appointments of every sort, he will in effect carry with him his own Lyceum from the orchestra backwards. Only the auditorium and its occupants will be changed; and if the visit were to be prolonged over years instead of months this change might be all-important. In the course of a winter tour, however, he will scarcely have the time, even if he had the will, to adapt his style to the changed conditions. I am not prepared to say that a prolonged separation from his Lyceum audiences - and his Lyceum critics might not have a beneficial effect upon Mr. Irving's art. It is useless to speculate one way or the other, for on separation long enough seriously to influence his style is likely to take place. Any Yankee notions he may bring. Download or read book Caliban and the Yankees written by Harvey R. Neptune and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a compelling story of the installation and operation of U.S. bases in the Caribbean colony of Trinidad during World War II, Harvey Neptune examines how the people of this British island contended with the colossal force of American empire-building at a critical time in the island's history. The U.S. military occupation between 1941 and 1947 came at the same time that Trinidadian nationalist politics sought to project an image of a distinct, independent, and particularly un-British cultural landscape. The American intervention, Neptune shows, contributed to a tempestuous scene as Trinidadians deliberately engaged Yankee personnel, paychecks, and practices flooding the island. He explores the military-based economy, relationships between U.S. servicemen and Trinidadian women, and the influence of American culture on local music (especially calypso), fashion, labor practices, and everyday racial politics. Tracing the debates about change among ordinary and privileged Trinidadians, he argues that it was the poor, the women, and the youth who found the most utility in and moved most avidly to make something new out of the American presence. Neptune also places this history of Trinidad's modern times into a wider Caribbean and Latin American perspective, highlighting how Caribbean peoples sometimes wield ''America'' and ''American ways'' as part of their localized struggles.
