Book Yankee Ingenuity in the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Yankee Ingenuity in the War Classic Reprint written by Frank Parker Stockbridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yankee Ingenuity in the War IN presenting this report Of some of the more striking and inspiring examples Of the technical achievements Of America that went SO far toward the Winning of the Great War, the author wishes, first, to point out that the omission of any mention Of the great scientific and engineering feats Of the Entente Allies, except incidentally, is due not to any desire to disparage the magnificent work Of those European masters Of pure and applied science whose ser vice in the cause of humanity was surely no less fruitful and even more arduous than that Of their American confreres. But the Whole scope and plan Of this book, by its nature, excludes from present consideration all but distinctly American enterprise in this field. Even within this comparatively narrow range, there is no pretext that the Whole field has been covered, or that What has been covered might not have been dealt with more in detail and with greater scientific precision. Event ually that will be done; beyond a doubt the complete history Of science in the war, yet to be written, will reveal a thousand wonders much more marvelous than any that have yet been set down. This volume, however, has not been written for the scientist or the technologist, but for the average American, neither skilled nor interested in technical details, but susceptible, the author believes, to the thrill Of patriotic pride that comes from the recital of the story Of a winning fight against heavy Odds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sophistication of the photographic process has had two dramatic results—freeing the artist from the confines of journalistic reproductions and freeing the scientist from the unavoidable imprecision of the artist's prints. So released, both have prospered and produced their impressive nineteenth- and twentieth-century outputs. It is this premise that William M. Ivins, Jr., elaborates in Prints and Visual Communication, a history of printmaking from the crudest wood block, through engraving and lithography, to Talbot's discovery of the negative-positive photographic process and its far reaching consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broke Neck, Kentucky, lies deep in Appalachia. Its people are descendents of the men and women who settled the country during the Revolutionary War, and their ways have not changed much in the past two hundred years. Shady Grove chronicles the riotous adventures and misadventures of Broke Neck's Fowler clan, among them Frony, the feisty and articulate widow who narrates the tale, and Sudley, the thrice-married farmer and quintessential "ridge man." Sudley, who wields considerable political influence among his kin and community, isn't happy when a new preacher from "outside" comes in from his city-based denomination with ideas about what's wrong in Broke Neck. What follows is a compelling example of the tension between urban viewpoints and rural traditions, a central conflict in Appalachia. The town's delicate balance is disturbed when other outsiders -- federal revenue officials and four suitors responding to a personal ad -- converge in an unlikely climax that is both comic and telling. In her last book of fiction about her adopted Kentucky homeland, Janice Holt Giles cleverly dispels the common stereotypes of rural peoples by creating honest, believable characters who cherish their soil, churches, songs, and lines of kin. Shady Grove is a novel that makes us laugh and touches our hearts. Janice Holt Giles (1905-1979), author of nineteen books, lived and wrote near Knifley, Kentucky, for thirty-four years. Her biography is told in Janice Holt Giles: A Writer's Life.

Book Mastering America

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert E. Bonner
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2009-04-27
  • ISBN : 0521833957
  • Pages : 347 pages

Download or read book Mastering America written by Robert E. Bonner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering America recounts efforts of "proslavery nationalists" to navigate the nineteenth-century geopolitics of imperialism, federalism, and nationalism and to articulate themes of American mission in overtly proslavery terms. At the heart of this study are spokesmen of the Southern "Master Class" who crafted a vision of American destiny that put chattel slavery at its center. Looking beyond previous studies of the links between these "proslavery nationalists" and secession, the book sheds new light on the relationship between the conservative Unionism of the 1850s and the key formulations of Confederate nationalism that arose during war in the 1860s. Bonner's innovative research charts the crucial role these men and women played in the development of American imperialism, constitutionalism, evangelicalism, and popular patriotism.
