Book Documenting the Undocumented

Download or read book Documenting the Undocumented written by Marta Caminero-Santangelo and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the work of Junot Díaz, Cristina García, Julia Alvarez, and other Latino/a authors who are U.S. citizens, Marta Caminero-Santangelo examines how writers are increasingly expressing their solidarity with undocumented immigrants. Through storytelling, these writers create community and a sense of peoplehood that includes non-citizen Latino/as. This volume also foregrounds the narratives of unauthorized migrants themselves, showing how their stories are emerging into the public sphere. Immigration and citizenship are multifaceted issues, and the voices are myriad. They challenge common interpretations of "illegal" immigration, explore inevitable traumas and ethical dilemmas, protest their own silencing in immigration debates, and even capitalize on the topic for the commercial market. Yet these texts all seek to affect political discourse by advancing the possibility of empathy across lines of ethnicity and citizenship status. As border enforcement strategies escalate along with political rhetoric, detentions, and deaths, these counternarratives are more significant than ever before, and their perspectives cannot be ignored. What we are witnessing, argues Caminero-Santangelo, is a mass mobilization of stories. This growing body of literature is critical to understanding not only the Latino/a immigrant experience but also alternative visions of nation and belonging.

Download or read book Undocumented in L A written by Dianne Walta Hart and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her story is similar to those of the thousands of illegal immigrants who cross the border into America every day in search of political or economic refuge. In 1988, a woman in her late thirties named Yamileth obtains a passport, leaves her home, and makes a daring, dangerous trip from war-torn Nicaragua through Central America to the United States to join her family. In Los Angeles, Yamileth must find a place to live and a job to support her family, yet keep secret the fact that she entered the country as an illegal alien. She must adapt to new customs and the flood of Latino and Asian immigrants. She must live among the people of California, who in 1994 approved Proposition 187 with the intent to deny undocumented immigrants education, social services, and health care. Yamileth's daily experiences mirror the hopes and frustrations of women and men who must confront new cultural, economic, and political environments. Author Dianne Walta Hart's long and close relationship with Yamileth allows her to present Yamileth's cultural struggles and personal development in poignant narrative and passages in Yamileth's own words. From start to finish, Undocumented in L.A.: An Immigrant's Story is testimonial literature at its best. This eye-opening work will show the reader the opposition and difficulties undocumented immigrants face in a nation that at first beckons them with freedom, then rejects them with unwelcoming borders and restrictive laws. Undocumented in L.A.: An Immigrant's Story is an excellent resource for courses in immigration, political science, and social and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Editors Ana Y. Ramos-Zayas and Mérida M. Rúa have crafted an anthology that is unique in both form and content. The book combines previously published canonical pieces with original, cutting-edge works created for this volume. The sections of the text are arranged thematically as critical dialogues, each with a brief preface that provides context and a conceptual direction for the scholarly conversation that ensues. The editors frame the volume around the “humanistic social sciences,” using the term to highlight the historical and social contexts under which expressive cultural forms and archival records are created. Critical Dialogues in Latinx Studies masterfully sheds light on the diversity and complexity of the everyday lives of Latinx populations, the political economic structures that shape enduring racialization and cultural stereotyping, and the continuing efforts to carve out new lives as diasporic, transnational, global, and colonial subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sun Up! Engaging REAL-WORLD tasks for seventh graders is an integrated skills book which has been developed based on the Costa Rican English new program starting in 2017 for seventh graders. The book is ideal to study over an academic year. Students practice the four skills through communicative activities that follow the Task Based Approach in four stages. To achieve the language competence, this book is divided into six scenarios, each scenario is divided into four themes and an extension section called review and expand. Each theme organizes the tasks into two main components: oral and written comprehension, and oral and written production. The Action Oriented Approach states that students are social agents who use the target language to perform specific actions in real life contexts. To be coherent with this basic principle, the seventh grade English book includes the use of digital technology in the development ofmini-projects and critical thinking by letting students make decisions through problem-solving situations. SUNup! Engaging REAL-WORLD tasks for seventh graders has been designed to consolidate the A1 band, based on the Common European Framework. In the extension activities, students are expected to reinforce grammar and sentence framesas well as reading comprehension. At the end of each scenario, students are expected to check their progress which derive from the linguistic competences “Learner can …” using a Can-do check list. A flexible classroom arrangement is recommended so that students can have opportunities to walk around and work in pairs or individually, which will provide them with the opportunity of developing learners’ meta-cognitive, meta-affective, and meta-social strategies in an organized, purposeful and scaffolded learning experience. Besides the students’ book, teachers have access to the audio- material and the teachers’guide. The F PRIMA Publishing house focuses on supporting English Teachers in the process of understanding and implementing the new English syllabus approved by the Consejo Superior de Educación in the year 2016. Thank you for your commitment to the goal of transforming English Classrooms across CostaRica.

Each story provides an intimate look at how commitment and affection can turn into disloyalty or even hatred. Book Anthropology and Migration

Download or read book Anthropology and Migration written by Caroline B. Brettell and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2003-09-08 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brettell's new book provides new insight into the processes of migration and transnationalism from an anthropological perspective. It has been estimated at the turn of the millennium that 160 million people are living outside of their country of birth or citizenship. The author analyzes macro and micro approaches to migration theory, utilizing her extensive fieldwork in Portugal as well as research in Germany, Brazil, France, the United States and Canada. Key issues she discusses include: the value of immigrant incorporation vs. assimilation models; the impacts on individual, household and community as well as institutions and states; the role of ethnicity and ethnic groups; the effects of clandestine or illegal immigration; the differing commitments to host vs. sending communities; the shift from city enclaves to suburban areas; the constraints and opportunities that lead to ethnic entrepreneurship; the role of religion in transnational linkages; and the differing experiences of men and women as migrants. Brettell also explores the relevance of life histories and oral narratives in understanding the immigration process and the mediation of boundaries in a new society. This book provides a fresh perspective on the contemporary experience of migration and will be indispensable to instructors and researchers in anthropology, race and ethnic studies, immigration studies, urban studies, sociology, and international relations.
