Book Yale Lectures on Preaching

Download or read book Yale Lectures on Preaching written by Nathaniel J. Burton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yale Lectures on Preaching: And Other Writings We loved him, and he loved us: - it is with this thought that we meet together this afternoon, for the simple and impressive service of the hour before us. The friend whose mortal part we lay tenderly and tearfully in its peaceful resting-place, and whose immortal living self passes to a larger, grander life as we bid him farewell, was a common friend to us all. Strangers to one another, it may be; having our homes in many different places and our work in many different lines; some of us coming into this time of sorrow from the joy of an almost daily communion in thought and hope, and others recalling to our remembrance the delightful association of earlier or later years, we turn our footsteps lovingly to this consecrated house and find ourselves united in a bond of sympathy as we enter within its doors. The spirit of the dead, yet living, friend seems to rest upon us all. We look upon his face and say: What a large-minded, large-hearted, generous, noble man he was. The world, we whisper sadly to each other, has lost out of itself for us something that it will not regain, and becomes poorer and emptier to our thought as one more of those, whose minds and souls appear to us peculiarly fitted for a higher life than this, moves onward to another sphere. What more shall we say concerning him? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Preaching: Delivered Before the Divinity School of Yale College in January and February, 1877 Let me say one word more in introduction. He who is called upon to give these lectures cannot but remember that they are given every year, and that he has had very able and faithful predecessors. There are certainly, therefore, some things which he may venture to omit without being supposed to be either ignorant or careless of them. There are certain first principles, of primary importance, which he may take for granted in all that he says. They are so funda mental, that they must be always present, and their power must pervade every treatment of the work which is built upon them. But they need not be de liberately stated anew each year. It would make these courses of lectures very monotonous; and one may venture to assume that there are some elemen tary principles upon whose truth all students of the ology are agreed, and whose importance they all feel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preacher His Life and Work: Yale Lectures In the course of these lectures I am to speak on the general theme of "The Preacher: his life and work." There is little or no need of introduction. The only prefatory word I wish to offer is this. I have been in the Christian ministry for over twenty years. I love my calling. I have a glowing delight in its services. I am conscious of no distractions in the shape of any competitors for my strength and allegiance. Book Lectures on Preaching

Download or read book Lectures on Preaching written by Matthew Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Preaching: Delivered to the Students of Yale College, in 1879 These Lectures have not been prepared as a- treatise on homiletics, or on the. pastoral office. The "Lyman-Beecher Lectureship" in Yale College was founded to supplement the regular course of instruction in Theology with the suggestions of those actively engaged in ministerial work; and hence its range is limited, and the work of the Lecturer par takes largely of personal experience and observations. The writer has been, during their preparation and delivery, so constantly pressed with ecclesiastical duties, that he has had little time to seek authorities or to cultivate elegance of style. He designed the Lectures to be the simple expression of his experience and observations through a somewhat extended ministry, and in their form suited rather to the ear than to the library. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nine Lectures on Preaching: Delivered at Yale, New Haven, Connecticut F I rightly understand the objects for which the Lyman Beecher Lectureship was founded, the Lecturer is not expected to deliver a complete and systematic course on Homiletics. He discharges his duty if he offers to the students whom he has the honour of addressing those practical suggestions with regard to the work of the Christian Preacher which have been verified by his own experience and observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Preaching: Delivered to the Students of Theology at Yale College, January and February, 1882 Possibly we can be led to a better conception of that place if we glance for a moment at the aim of the Christian Religion. Manifestly, its aim is to make God known to men, to make men known to themselves, and by this twofold knowl edge to bring them into harmony; to make men aware of their wants, their dangers, their duties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's Word Through Preaching: The Lyman Beecher Lectures Before the Theological Department of Yale College These lectures were written to be spoken, not read. It was not possible to suspend the necessary labors of a pastor in order to seek elegance of style, or abundance of authority or of illustration, even if such had been possible to the author, or desirable in the lectures. A colloquial expression, or a homely illustration has not been rejected, if it seemed to set out the idea to be conveyed. The main object has been to give and suggest thought, to magnify the divine word as the preacher's instrument, and to point out the methods in which it is to be employed in preach ing.
