Book excerpt: "The Book of Psalms is often seen as an anthology of prayers and hymns from which the reader may extract a selection as need or interest dictates. However, a recent development in Psalms scholarship has been a discussion of whether the collection of psalms has some overall structure. Is the whole of the Book of Psalms greater than the sum of its individual parts? This commentary argues that it is and presents a continuous reading of the Book of Psalms. Moreover, the long-standing tradition, found within both Judaism and Christianity, of associating the psalms with David is used as a reading strategy. In this volume, the Psalms are presented sequentially. Each has its place in the collection but thirty-five are treated at greater length. They are read, at least in the first two books (Psalms 1-72), as if they were David's words. Beyond that a more complex and developed association between David and the Psalms is demanded. David becomes a figure of hope for a different future and a new royal reign reflecting the reign of Yahweh. Throughout, David remains a model of piety for all who seek to communicate with God in prayer. It is in light of this that later disasters in the life of Israel, especially the Babylonian Exile, can be faced. In the Book of Psalms, the past, in terms of both David's life and the history of Israel, is the key to future well-being and faithfulness."--Back cover.

Book Yahweh My Shepherd and My King

Download or read book Yahweh My Shepherd and My King written by Ruben Joseph and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why David chose to portray the Lord as his shepherd in Psalm 23? Is that all he is portraying Him as in the Psalm? What exactly does David mean by “I shall not want”? What is “the valley of the shadow of death”? If you crave an in-depth analysis of the deeper meaning of these expressions and wish to savor the poetic beauty of Psalm 23, this book is a must-read for you. King David is one of the most fascinating figures in the Holy Bible and He was an exceptional poet, musician, and songwriter. In Psalm 23, he captures the beauty of nature and combines it with his unshakable faith based on his relational experiences with Yahweh. From the historical context when David wrote the psalm, David was a lost sheep—on the run from king Saul, became a nomad going from town to town to survive. He was a black sheep—his was overlooked by his own father, and his brothers were angry with him for his bravery in the face of Goliath’s defiance. But he was also a safe sheep—through it all Yahweh, the Lord, was with him to keep him safe from danger, and ultimately made him king. Whichever category you fit in—whether a lost sheep, black sheep, or a safe sheep, you can still put your trust in the Lord as YOUR Shepherd to guide and protect you always. THIS IS BOOK IS A DAY’S READING FOR A LIFETIME OF FAITH—A Must Have!!!

Book Yahweh s Winged Form in the Psalms

Download or read book Yahweh s Winged Form in the Psalms written by Joel M. LeMon and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The striking image of the winged Yahweh occurs in six psalms (e. g., Ps 17:8 Hide me in the shadow of your wings). Scholars have disagreed on the background, meaning, and significance of the image, arguing that it: (1) likens the Israelite deity to a bird; (2) alludes to the winged sun disk; (3) draws from general Egyptian symbolism for protection; (4) evokes images of winged goddesses; or (5) refers to winged cherubim in the temple and/or on the ark of the covenant. These divergent proposals signal a need for clearer methods of interpreting biblical imagery in light of visual-artistic material from the ancient Near East. This volume refines iconographic methodologies by treating the image of the winged Yahweh as one among a constellation of literary images in each psalm. Since the portrayals of Yahweh in each psalm have distinct contours, one finds several congruencies in Syro-Palestinian iconographic material. The congruent iconographic motifs for Yahweh's winged form include (1) the winged sun disk (in multiple forms and variations), (2) the Horus falcon, (3) winged suckling goddesses, and (4) winged deities in combat. No single image stands behind the portrayals of Yahweh. In fact, even within a single psalm, more than one iconographic trope can provide congruency with the literary imagery and inform the interpretation of the text. Thus, the winged Yahweh in the Psalms provides an example of a 'multistable' literary image, one which simultaneously evokes multiple iconographical motifs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To open the Book of Psalms is to enter the world of God. To read the Psalms is to read the words of God and hear the words of these ancient people in response to this God who has graciously drawn them into an eternal covenant. The Book of Psalms is one continuous conversation that ranges over many centuries--perhaps nearly a millennium--between the God of Israel and the people of Israel; or more accurately, the God of glory and this particular people who have been called to live life on the edge of glory as the people of God. There is no mystery to this conversation. It is all an embroidery of grace. Modern day readers may find themselves caught in the nexus between personal experience and the desire to live a life of faith on the other. These will find a voice in the Psalms. Ancient Israel strove to put their trust in the One God of All--in the face of myriad challenges throughout her long history. What we find here is a bold witness to their hard-won faith and confidence in the sheltering presence of the One God of All. This is a message that is especially timely for people who may desire the deeper dimensions of life and faith amid the inescapable incongruities and anxieties of postmodern life.

Book The Psalms in Israel s Worship

Download or read book The Psalms in Israel s Worship written by Sigmund Mowinckel and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important contributions to our understanding of the psalms, "The Psalms in Israel's Worship" by Sigmund Mowinckel has largely provided the framework and suppositions of modern Psalms study. Fully revised from the original Norwegian edition and now featuring a substantial new foreword by James Crenshaw, this classic work (two volumes in one) argues that the psalms originated in actual temple worship and were used regularly to add drama to Israelbs adoration of Yahweh. Throughout this fascinating work, Mowinckel carefully explores the relationship of the various psalm types to the congregationbs devotional life, including hymns of praise from Israel's national festivals, psalms of lamentation and penitence, and personal or private psalms of thanksgiving. Other topics include the psalms' relationship to prophecy and wisdom, their composition and collection, their style and performance, and the technical terminology involved in Psalms study. Praise for "The Psalms in Israel's Worship" bWe must be very grateful to Mowinckel and all who have helped him to make available this standard work in psalms research to a larger audience.b -- "Journal of Biblical Literature" bA mere review must fail to do justice to this bookbs awesome learning and insight.b -- "Catholic Biblical Quarterly" bBeyond any doubt whatever, this book represents thorough scholarship and has to be taken into consideration by any teacher of the Old Testament.b -- "Princeton Seminary Bulletin"

Book excerpt: The Psalms raise many difficult and controversial issues. Who are the enemies in the Individual Lament Psalms? How many Royal Psalms are there and what was the role of the king in the cult? What happened at the Autumn Festival? What makes a Psalm a Wisdom Psalm? Why are the Psalms arranged as they are and how far is it possible to date them? Can we make sense of the often obscure Psalm headings? What light is shed on the Psalms by other ancient Near Eastern texts? These and many other issues are judiciously evaluated by John Day in a wide-ranging volume.

Book Psalms for Everyone Part II Psalms 73 150

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other part of the Old Testament, the book of Psalms reveals to us the intimacy possible between God and humanity. As songs and prayers of praise and lament, the psalms are unsurpassed in their variety, depth and range. They encompass the whole breadth of human emotion: hatred and love, despair and joy, resentment and gratitude, fear of abandonment and deep trust. They encourage us to be honest and thorough in our dealings with God, and they teach us how to praise him, seek him and rest in him. Using personal anecdote, a witty and lively style, and drawing on his considerable theological knowledge, John Goldingay takes us deep into the unfolding story of the Old Testament.

CHAPTER II THE BOOK OF PSALMS CHAPTER II THE BOOK OF PSALMS Title. The first book in the collection of Writings, in the ordinary Hebrew Bible, is the book of Psalms. The book itself furnishes no title for the collection of psalms as a whole; nor is such title found anywhere else in the Old Testament. The nearest approach to it occurs in Psalm 72. 20, "The prayers1 of David the son of Jesse are ended." The singular of the same word "prayer" appears as the title of Psalms 17, 86, 90, 102, 142, and would be appropriate in many other cases; indeed, all the psalms glow with the spirit of prayer, if prayer is interpreted in a broad sense as any turning of the heart to God in supplication, reverence, or praise. The later Jews gave to the book the title sepher tehilllm, "book of praises," which title was known also to the early church fathers. The singular noun tehillah, "praise" or "praisesong," which has furnished this appropriate title for the entire book, is found in the Hebrew text as the title of only one psalm.2 The usual Septuagint title is /3ijCUo? ipakjuov, biblos psalmon, "book of psalms,"3 rendered in the Vulgate, Liber psalmorum. In the Codex Alexandrinus the title ipaXrfjptov, psaltcrion--the name of a stringed instrument4--is substituted for the usual Septuagint title. The latter 1 Hebrew, tephilldth; singular, tephiUah. 1 Psalm 145. The ypaXiiM is primarily a song sung to the accompaniment of stringed instruments. 4 Perhaps the same as the frequently mentioned Hebrew nebhel. is used in the New Testament in Luke 20. 42 and Acts 1. 20. The English titles, Book of Psalms and Psalter, are the equivalents of the two Septuagint headings. Number and Division. Both the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint give the total number of psalms as 150, though the two...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major shifts in OT studies over the past half of a century has been the move away from studies dominated by diachronic matters toward more text-immanent, synchronic approaches. In Psalter studies, one can see such a shift on two levels. First, on the level of the individual psalm, there has been a general trend to focus on the literary and linguistic features as the proper means for discerning the meaning of the poem. Second, on the level of the Psalter as a whole, scholars have devoted significant attention to its canonical shape and the role of adjacent psalms in the interpretation of each individual psalm. In Remember, O Yahweh, Todd approaches Psalms 135--137 on both of these levels. After a detailed poetic analysis of each psalm, he proposes that Psalms 135--137 serve as a bridge between the Songs of Ascents (Pss 120--134) and the Last Davidic Psalter (Pss 138--145). As such, this group highlights Yahweh's past acts of deliverance as the basis for the post-exilic community's prayer for Yahweh to remember his people's lowly condition.
