Book Child Sacrifice in Ancient Israel

Download or read book Child Sacrifice in Ancient Israel written by Heath D. Dewrell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many religious acts condemned in the Hebrew Bible, child sacrifice stands out as particularly horrifying. The idea that any group of people would willingly sacrifice their own children to their god(s) is so contrary to modern moral sensibilities that it is difficult to imagine that such a practice could have ever existed. Nonetheless, the existence of biblical condemnation of these rites attests to the fact that some ancient Israelites in fact did sacrifice their children. Indeed, a close reading of the evidence—biblical, archaeological, epigraphic, etc.—indicates that there are at least three different types of Israelite child sacrifice, each with its own history, purpose, and function. In addition to examining the historical reality of Israelite child sacrifice, Dewrell’s study also explores the biblical rhetoric condemning the practice. While nearly every tradition preserved in the Hebrew Bible rejects child sacrifice as abominable to Yahweh, the rhetorical strategies employed by the biblical writers vary to a surprising degree. Thus, even in arguing against the practice of child sacrifice, the biblical writers themselves often disagreed concerning why Yahweh condemned the rites and why they came to exist in the first place.

  • Author : Clarke W. Owens
  • Publisher : Christian Alternative

  • ISBN : 1782790667

Download or read book Son of Yahweh written by Clarke W. Owens and published by Christian Alternative. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has ever spent time in a Christian church knows that the gospels are never read as a series of ordered events forming a narrative whole. Instead they are read with dogged incoherence, focusing on tiny snippets taken out of context. The birth stories of Matthew and Luke are emphasized at Christmas; the stone rolls away from the tomb at Easter. The gospels are used in churches only as occasional readings, lections, chapters and verses which are dipped into for liturgical moments. If we understand them that way, it makes no difference whether Peter and John observe Jesus raising a dead girl in one chapter and in the next seem dumbfounded by the very concept of resurrection. That juxtaposition is dramatically incoherent only if we assume that meaning derives from the order of events in a story that is read as a whole; that is, as a literary fiction. Reading the gospels as novels raises questions about how we think of fiction, how we think of history, and how we think of religion. Critical reading opens windows to truth claims at basic levels: the level of the definition of the text, the level of when and how it was composed, the level of form or genre. These are questions for the literary critic, and they lead to factual conclusions, including the author's conclusion that crucifixion and resurrection are allegories for the destruction of Jewish culture in Jerusalem in 70 C.E. and the rebirth of that culture in the form of a Hellenized and de-tribalized Judaic offshoot, Christianity. ,

Book Welcome to the Family

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Dawson

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Welcome to the Family written by Kevin Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a child of God? Adoption is one of the key metaphors in Scripture for becoming a Christian. John 1:12 tells us that those who believe in Jesus have the "right to be called children of God." But rights are of no value unless they are exercised. Many Christians have yet to fully embrace their rights as the children of God. Many believe that it only becomes a reality when we go to Heaven. Yet the Bible clearly teaches that we belong to Christ in this life, and living in His family brings blessings on Earth. To experience life as God's child, we have to stop living in our identity as orphans of sin and choose to dwell in the house of the Lord. Using a powerful, real-life adoption story as an allegory, Kevin Dawson explores the many effects our adoption in Christ has on our lives today and in eternity, and what happens when we encounter life as a child of Yahweh.

Book The Lost Teachings of Atlantis

Download or read book The Lost Teachings of Atlantis written by Jon Peniel and published by Windsor Hill. This book was released on 1997-07-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the account of an American teenager who discovered a monastery in Tibet that was the inspiration for the legend of Shangri La. It might be categorized as a 'new age' or philosophy book, like the Celestine Prophecy, since it focuses on his spiritual training and their teachings in a novel-like format. Hard to believe, but interestingly, the sub-tropical region amongst the Himalayas that he describes finding, was later documented by explorers from National Geographic, then 'covered up' (there is still evidence of this). Also interesting is that the author was apparently mentioned in the Edgar Cayce readings (the famous American psychic whose books have sold millions of copies), as someone who would one day bring an important message to the world.
