Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything you need to race your way up through the fleet If you sail--even a little--you’ve probably thought about trying your hand at racing. Now you can stop thinking and do it. Getting Started in Sailboat Racing makes this endlessly fascinating lifetime sport accessible to anyone who wants to give it a try, whether you own a sailboat, are hoping to crew, or spectating from a nearby perch. With scores of helpful illustrations, this user-friendly manual takes you around the buoys, explaining new rule changes and tactics that apply to each part of the race. You'll learn how to: Execute quick, competitive starts Maximize speed and efficiency on the windward leg Maneuver for position around the windward mark Take full advantage of downwind and reaching legs Handle the spinnaker (even when asymmetrical), and beat the crowd at the jibe and leeward marks Eke out every last bit of speed as you sprint to the finish There are few things in this world more satisfying than racing a sailboat. Get in on the action and find out what you've been missing. All you need is a competitive spirit and a little help from Getting Started in Sailboat Racing. "Cort and Stearns deftly break down racing, from start to finish, into basic elements, making the sport more accessible by giving the novice a strong understanding of the fundamentals . . . this book should be required reading for anyone wanting to get out on the course. The book goes into enough detail on tactics and sail trim to make the average sailor not only comfortable on the racecourse, but competitive, as well." -- SAILING "With Cort and Stearns' enthusiasm for the topic and straightforward advice, it's hard not to read this book without picturing yourself rounding the buoys just ahead of the rest of the fleet." -- Soundings

Book The Sea Takes No Prisoners

Download or read book The Sea Takes No Prisoners written by Peter Clutterbuck and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a classic real-life story of derring do on the high seas, complete with extreme risk, last-minute ingenuity and many near-misses. Beginning in the 1960s, this book tells of the real life adventures of the author as a boy – a time of boarding schools, long holidays and an unbelievable (to today's parents) amount of freedom and danger. Encouraged by his parents (who lived abroad) to become more independent and self-sufficient, Peter decided to see how far he could get in his family's small open dinghy Calypso. Aged 16, he spent a winter restoring her, before pootling straight out into a force 7 gale and very nearly capsizing, after which he headed back to land to plan even more extreme adventures. Calypso was a Wayfarer, a small (16ft) and very popular class of open dinghy; a boat designed for pottering around coastlines and estuaries during the day. But along with the occasional brave crewmate, Peter managed to sail her across the Channel, through the Bay of Biscay, down the French canals and into the Mediterranean, then up into the North Sea and the Baltic to Oslo, living aboard for three months at a time. These were some of the longest voyages that anyone had ever achieved in an open boat, where (as Peter says) you 'have to be like a tightrope walker, concentrating on balance day and night, fully aware of the consequence of relaxing your vigilance'. He survived huge waves, nine rudder breakages in heavy seas, dismasting, capsizes, and hallucinations caused by sleep deprivation. He also managed it on a tiny budget, working as a farm labourer, hitchhiking everywhere, and at times living on one meal of cereal a day, to save the maximum amount for his boat. Charming, quite British in style, beautifully written and a lovely insight into a seemingly golden time, this is primarily a great read, but will be of huge practical use to anyone wanting to go that bit further in their dinghy. It also includes a lovely Foreword by world-famous yachtsman Brian Thompson.

Download or read book A Woman s Guide to the World of Sailing written by Jane Golden and published by Seaworthy Publications Incorporated. This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jane Golden has been a sailor for most of her life, beginning with some raucous experiences as a young adult volunteer crew member on other people's sailboats. Fast forward and she was cruising the Gulf Coast with family and friends on her own boat, Gypsy Lady. After an enjoyable description of her Gulf Coast experiences, Jane ventures to Europe where she first charter sailed with friends, and later crossed the Atlantic Ocean as a crewmember for the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. She goes into great depth about the positives and negatives of such events; including how they are organized, the peculiarities and politics of such events, and what it was like to be a part of the crew on a transatlantic crossing. Finally, she writes about the very enjoyable experiences supporting Gypsy Lady and her family's participation in the annual Regata al Sol from Pensacola to Mexico, a regional yacht club race that began in the early 60's. The descriptions of the Regata al Sol event founder, and the post-race celebrations, are a treasure trove of details that would make anyone want to participate in the race and the festivities. Jane gives us a compelling look at her experiences as a woman in the world of sailing, and great descriptions of the various kinds of sailing, racing, and cruising in which she has participated. Her book informs, instructs, and entertains"--
