Book Thames Yacht Club

Download or read book Thames Yacht Club written by James Reyburn and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a lively and engaging portrait of a New England yacht club's first three-quarters-of-a-century. A fast-paced narrative, powerful interview-based anecdotes, and a collection of 50 photographs vividly bring the club's story to life. There's drama-the brute force of the legendary 1938 hurricane, the near-collision of a sailing dinghy and a destroyer-escort, and the chilling spectacle of a club boat sinking during a race. And there's humor-the Coast Guard towing the transom out of a swamped small boat, young sailors "blockading" an intrusive ferryboat, and children trying to sail into the wind. Founded in 1933 by a handful of sailing enthusiasts in New London, Connecticut, and maintained by its members, the club today boasts a membership of nearly 200 and a fleet of more than 150 boats. The club's location on the west bank of the Thames River, a mile from Long Island Sound, affords quick access to some of the finest cruising and racing waters in the country. Over the years, five generations of families have made the club their base for both waterborne and shore activities. Generations more will do the same as the club sails on to the century mark and beyond.

Book excerpt: The Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) began in 1868, shortly after the end of the Civil War. Since its founding, the yacht club has played an essential role in Detroit society. Under the leadership of Gar Wood and Gus Schantz, Detroit became the world's center for the new sport of speedboat racing. America's 1932 Olympic swim team competed at the club en route to its gold medal victories, and from 1932 to 1935, the club hosted bouts for Detroit's Golden Gloves boxing tournament. Today's clubhouse was designed by George Mason, the architect of Detroit's Masonic Temple and Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel. Completed in 1923 and in the National Register of Historic Places, it is the DYC's fifth clubhouse, and at 93,658 square feet, it is the largest yacht club facility in the United States. Over time, the club has evolved from only male members to an inclusive club with a diverse membership.

Book The Beverly Yacht Club

  • Author : Judith Westlund Rosbe
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2006-07-05
  • ISBN : 1439617899
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book The Beverly Yacht Club written by Judith Westlund Rosbe and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-07-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beverly Yacht Club, one of the oldest yacht clubs in America, was founded in 1872 by young men who summered in Beverly. They were upset that the newly formed Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead refused to recognize yachts under 30 feet in length on the waterline for the races that they held. Thus, Edward and Walter Burgess (the famous yacht designer), at a supper party at their home in Boston on February 24, 1872, formally launched the Beverly Yacht Club. The first regatta was held by the club on June 22, 1872, in which 11 boats, 10 catboats, and a sloop started in three classes. For the first 23 years, the Beverly Yacht Club had no fixed abode; they held races and regattas at ports most convenient to the members. By the mid-1880s, regattas were held in Monument Beach and Marblehead, but as the Buzzards Bay membership increased, the Beverly Yacht Club leased its first clubhouse on Wing's Neck in 1895. In 1913, the club moved to Marion, where it has been located ever since.

Book A History of the Riverdale Yacht Club

Download or read book A History of the Riverdale Yacht Club written by Ruben P. Mendez and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Riverdale Yacht Club is a small private association on the shoreline of the Hudson River in the Riverdale section of New York Citys borough of The Bronx. While author Ruben Mendez furnishes a chronicle of the institution, he also discloses valuable historical information about Riverdale, the Hudson River, the building of what is today the Metro-North railroads Hudson Division, and the creation of the New York-New Jersey Palisades into an interstate park. Founded in 1931, the yacht clubs first decade coincided with the Great Depression. During World War II, over sixty of its members served in the military. Mendez not only describes the sports and other activities that occurred on the clubs ground, he also provides thumbnail sketches of some noted members. They include Nobel Prize laureates; professors, deans and presidents of institutions of higher education; journalists; authors; diplomats; medical doctors; lawyers; and other figures of historical importance. Thus he has produced a work recounting a little-known, but essential part of the history of The Bronx and of New York City. Lloyd Ultan Bronx Borough Historian
