Book excerpt: Despite these efforts, traditional beliefs about the necessity of sex during pregnancy and breastfeeding for the good of the baby negate the use of condoms; drought affected women's belief in the sufficiency of their breast milk; generational and gender power dynamics often remove infant feeding decisions from the mother. [...] After 8 and 16 weeks of treatment the proportion of women with undetectable HIV-1 RNA load in both breasts was 50% and 40% in the placebo group and 55% and 42.1% in the women using chloroquine respectively. [...] Methods: Perceptions of women applying exclusive breastfeeding and early weaning while getting ART, and perceptions of HIV positive women about the effects of ART on breastfeeding and on mothers' and children's health are studied in a research project on "Social and cultural determinants of mother-to-child transmission of HIV through breastfeeding", held in 5 countries in Asia and Africa, with an. [...] Data on the ethnophysiology of lactation and of ART, on perceptions of the potential effect of ART on the baby, and on precautions taken by women to control this effect will be presented. Book Combating Hiv Aids in Developing Countries

Download or read book Combating Hiv Aids in Developing Countries written by Jennifer Prah Ruger and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2004 the international community will convene in Bangkok, Thailand, for the 15th international AIDS conference. The gathering occurs at an opportune time in global health as just months earlier, the World Health Organization and UNAIDS launched the quot;3 by 5quot; programme ő a global initiative to provide antiretroviral therapy to 3 million with HIV/AIDS in developing countries by the end of 2005. Additionally in the past few years the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria was created, to finance a scaling up of resources for interventions against all three diseases (www.theglobalfund.org/en/). These initiatives are augmented by increases in funding from private, national, and international sources. Together these efforts represent one of the most important trends in global health over the past five years. The movement for increased funding for HIV/AIDS in developing countries has brought attention to the issue and initiated a process of responding to it.
