Book Optical Technologies for Extreme Ultraviolet and Soft X ray Coherent Sources

Download or read book Optical Technologies for Extreme Ultraviolet and Soft X ray Coherent Sources written by Federico Canova and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reviews the most recent achievements in optical technologies for XUV and X-ray coherent sources. Particular attention is given to free-electron-laser facilities, but also to other sources available at present, such as synchrotrons, high-order laser harmonics and X-ray lasers. The optical technologies relevant to each type of source are discussed. In addition, the main technologies used for photon handling and conditioning, namely multilayer mirrors, adaptive optics, crystals and gratings are explained. Experiments using coherent light received during the last decades a lot of attention for the X-ray regime. Strong efforts were taken for the realization of almost fully coherent sources, e.g. the free-electron lasers, both as independent sources in the femtosecond and attosecond regimes and as seeding sources for free-electron-lasers and X-ray gas lasers. In parallel to the development of sources, optical technologies for photon handling and conditioning of such coherent and intense X-ray beams advanced. New problems were faced for the realization of optical components of beamlines demanding to manage coherent X-ray photons, e.g. the preservation of coherence and time structure of ultra short pulses.

Book Investigating the Interaction of High intensity XUV Pulses from a Free electron Laser with Warm Dense Aluminium

Download or read book Investigating the Interaction of High intensity XUV Pulses from a Free electron Laser with Warm Dense Aluminium written by Thomas Whitcher and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Thesis I describe the ongoing investigations into the interaction of high- intensity XUV light with materials in extreme conditions. The focus will be on the series of experiments that took place using FLASH - the first XUV Free-Electron Laser and the attempts to create and probe Warm Dense Matter using Aluminium as the target metal. By focusing the 92eV FEL beam using a specially designed Off-Axis Parabolic mirror, we created the highest intensity XUV light ever produced. We then went on to induce transparency in thin AI films with the high-intensity pulses and using an XUV spectrometer we were able to obtain a great deal of information on the propertied and distribution of the electrons in the conduction band in this highly excited state. We also look at the optical properties of Warm Dense Aluminium for photons with energies below the L-edge and finally attempt to describe the evolution of the AI target when irradiated by a high-intensity XUV pulse using results gathered in this Thesis, theoretical models and computer simulations.

  • Pages : 668 pages

Download or read book Plasma Atomic Physics written by Frank B. Rosmej and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Atomic Physics provides an overview of the elementary processes within atoms and ions in plasmas, and introduces readers to the language of atomic spectra and light emission, allowing them to explore the various and fascinating radiative properties of matter. The book familiarizes readers with the complex quantum-mechanical descriptions of electromagnetic and collisional processes, while also developing a number of effective qualitative models that will allow them to obtain adequately comprehensive descriptions of collisional-radiative processes in dense plasmas, dielectronic satellite emissions and autoionizing states, hollow ion X-ray emissions, polarized atoms and ions, hot electrons, charge exchange, atomic population kinetics, and radiation transport. Numerous applications to plasma spectroscopy and experimental data are presented, which concern magnetic confinement fusion, inertial fusion, laser-produced plasmas, and X-ray free-electron lasers’ interaction with matter. Particular highlights include the development of quantum kinetics to a level surpassing the almost exclusively used quasi-classical approach in atomic population kinetics, the introduction of the recently developed Quantum-F-Matrix-Theory (QFMT) to study the impact of plasma microfields on atomic populations, and the Enrico Fermi equivalent photon method to develop the “Plasma Atom”, where the response properties and oscillator strength distribution are represented with the help of a local plasma frequency of the atomic electron density. Based on courses held by the authors, this material will assist students and scientists studying the complex processes within atoms and ions in different kinds of plasmas by developing relatively simple but highly effective models. Considerable attention is paid to a number of qualitative models that deliver physical transparency, while extensive tables and formulas promote the practical and useful application of complex theories and provide effective tools for non-specialist readers.

Book Soft X Ray Thomson Scattering in Warm Dense Hydrogen at FLASH

Download or read book Soft X Ray Thomson Scattering in Warm Dense Hydrogen at FLASH written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present collective Thomson scattering with soft x-ray free electron laser radiation as a method to track the evolution of warm dense matter plasmas with ≈200 fs time resolution. In a pump-probe scheme an 800 nm laser heats a 20 [mu]m hydrogen droplet to the plasma state. After a variable time delay in the order of ps the plasma is probed by an x-ray ultra violet (XUV) pulse which scatters from the target and is recorded spectrally. Alternatively, in a self-Thomson scattering experiment, a single XUV pulse heats the target while a portion of its photons are being scattered probing the target. From such inelastic x-ray scattering spectra free electron temperature and density can be inferred giving insight on relaxation time scales in plasmas as well as the equation of state. We prove the feasibility of this method in the XUV range utilizing the free electron laser facility in Hamburg, FLASH. We recorded Thomson scattering spectra for hydrogen plasma, both in the self-scattering and in the pump-probe mode using optical laser heating.

Book Measurements and their Uncertainties

Download or read book Measurements and their Uncertainties written by Ifan Hughes and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hands-on guide is primarily intended to be used in undergraduate laboratories in the physical sciences and engineering. It assumes no prior knowledge of statistics. It introduces the necessary concepts where needed, with key points illustrated with worked examples and graphic illustrations. In contrast to traditional mathematical treatments it uses a combination of spreadsheet and calculus-based approaches, suitable as a quick and easy on-the-spot reference. The emphasis throughout is on practical strategies to be adopted in the laboratory. Error analysis is introduced at a level accessible to school leavers, and carried through to research level. Error calculation and propagation is presented though a series of rules-of-thumb, look-up tables and approaches amenable to computer analysis. The general approach uses the chi-square statistic extensively. Particular attention is given to hypothesis testing and extraction of parameters and their uncertainties by fitting mathematical models to experimental data. Routines implemented by most contemporary data analysis packages are analysed and explained. The book finishes with a discussion of advanced fitting strategies and an introduction to Bayesian analysis.

Book In situ Materials Characterization

Download or read book In situ Materials Characterization written by Alexander Ziegler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of nanoscale materials can change rapidly with time either because the environment changes rapidly or because the influence of the environment propagates quickly across the intrinsically small dimensions of nanoscale materials. Extremely fast time resolution studies using X-rays, electrons and neutrons are of very high interest to many researchers and is a fast-evolving and interesting field for the study of dynamic processes. Therefore, in situ structural characterization and measurements of structure-property relationships covering several decades of length and time scales (from atoms to millimeters and femtoseconds to hours) with high spatial and temporal resolutions are crucially important to understand the synthesis and behavior of multidimensional materials. The techniques described in this book will permit access to the real-time dynamics of materials, surface processes and chemical and biological reactions at various time scales. This book provides an interdisciplinary reference for research using in situ techniques to capture the real-time structural and property responses of materials to surrounding fields using electron, optical and x-ray microscopies (e.g. scanning, transmission and low-energy electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy) or in the scattering realm with x-ray, neutron and electron diffraction.
