Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A beautiful and timely gift." — Sifu Matthew Cohen, Founder, Sacred Energy Arts Founder For centuries, Chinese sages, rulers, and spiritual seekers have embraced a simple yet powerful principle that enables them to live in harmony with the source of nature and all life. The art of self-cultivation or xiu yang (pronounced "sheow yaang") is based on the concept that we can nurture our capacity to be fully human and awake, finding balance and peace in our home, life, and community. Author Mimi Kuo-Deemer leads readers through a combination of practices from meditation and mindfulness to yoga and qigong, offering ancient wisdom to help with contemporary challenges. "Exquisite ... for anyone interested in building a sustainable life that is imbued with vibrant healthy, mental and emotional clarity, and the most basic human need of all: happiness." — Donna Farhi, author of Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit "A treasure chest for the heart and mind, a potent tonic for body and breath, and a vibrant life essence for the spirit." — Simon Low, Principal of The Yoga Academy "Kuo-Deemer doesn't simply write about these ancient teachings, she shares the fruits of practicing them, processing timeless truths in her own heart and mind and body, so that we can do so in ours. Xiu Yang gives glimpses of her own transformational self-cultivation, while showing us a path for our own." — Martin Lylward, Co-Founder, The Mindfulness Institute "Profound and powerful." — Norman Blair, author of Brightening Our Inner Skies "Almost lost in China over the past century's onslaught of modernisation, xiu yang is now at the centre of Chinese people's search for values and belief — a tribute to the enduring power of these ancient practices. In this slender but powerful book, Mimi Kuo-Deemer unlocks xiu yang for the modern reader, de-mystifying it without losing the eternal, timeless qualities that have made it one of Chinese people's most potent ways of living a good, honourable, happy, and healthy life." — Ian Johnson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After Mao

Book Three Kingdoms and Chinese Culture

Download or read book Three Kingdoms and Chinese Culture written by Kimberly Besio and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length treatment in English of Three Kingdoms (Sanguo yanyi), often regarded as China's first great classical novel. Set in the historical period of the disunion (220–280 AD), Three Kingdoms fuses history and popular tradition to create a sweeping epic of heroism and political ambition. The essays in this volume explore the multifarious connections between Three Kingdoms and Chinese culture from a variety of disciplines, including history, literature, philosophy, art history, theater, cultural studies, and communications, demonstrating the diversity of backgrounds against which this novel can be studied. Some of the most memorable episodes and figures in Chinese literature appear within its pages, and Three Kingdoms has had a profound influence on personal, social, and political behavior, even language usage, in the daily life of people in China today. The novel has inspired countless works of theater and art, and, more recently, has been the source for movies and a television series. Long popular in other countries of East Asia, such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, Three Kingdoms has also been introduced to younger generations around the globe through a series of extremely popular computer games. This study helps create a better understanding of the work's unique place in Chinese culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publishers Weekly calls the book "a jaw dropping study of a lesser-known yet larger-than-life figure.” Opium Queen is the true story of the widely mythologized genderqueer Burmese opium-pioneer of noble Chinese descent, Olive Yang, who secretly ran an anti-communist rebel army supported by the CIA in the 1950s heyday of the Golden Triangle. Olive Yang was a widely mythologized genderqueer lesbian opium-pioneer in the 1950s heyday of the Golden Triangle. After escaping an arranged marriage with a noble cousin, Olive felt that she had no choice but to lead a life of banditry with an anti-communist rebel army supported by the CIA. As her smuggling empire grew, she became so powerful and infamous, novelists were inspired to write about her evil ruthlessness and beauty. Yet, Olive’s real life and identity remained a mystery to many. To the Kokang people whom the Yang family once ruled, Olive was both folk-hero and villain. To the communists Olive’s men harassed, she was the saboteur of the historic Sino-Burmese border agreement. To the generals who jailed her at the dawn of the Burmese military era, she was a national security threat. And to at least one man at the CIA, she was “Miss Hairy Legs.” Opium Queen is a journey to uncover the true story behind the propaganda and legends. Declassified intelligence documents portray Olive as a critical operator in one of the most important fronts of the clandestine Cold War against China. Through extensive interviews with the Yang family, Olive emerges as a complex anti-hero, searching for a way to live as an open homosexual, in an era when such a lifestyle was considered deeply shameful in Burma. The great military alliances that facilitate narcotics traffic in Myanmar today are Olive’s lasting legacy in the Golden Triangle, as is the disenfranchisement of the people of Kokang. Through the story of Olive’s formidable life, Opium Queen examines historic events that underpinned critical diplomatic relationships between the U.S., Myanmar, and China; and were at the root of Myanmar’s current political crisis.

Book Haegue Yang

Download or read book Haegue Yang written by Haegue Yang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haegue Yang is renowned for her multifaceted works that vary in form from collage to kinetic sculpture, perceptively evoking historical and contemporary narratives of migration, displacement, and cross-cultural translation. Using a language of abstraction, Yang transforms ordinary and domestic materials, such as venetian blinds, light bulbs, drying racks, yarn, and bells, into deeply allegorical, meticulously constructed installations and sculptures that dissociate these materials from their original contexts. The artist's installations become immersive environments that provoke the senses with a diversity of scents, sounds, and textures. Featuring essays contextualising Yang's artistic career, this book fully illustrates the scope of Art Gallery of Ontario's groundbreaking exhibition and generates new understandings of Yang's transformative contributions to the field of contemporary art. Exhibition: Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada (01.10.2020 - 05.04.2021).

In this clear, concise and easy-to-read book written by the journalist and Seitai specialist, Laura López Coto, you will find the keys to this culture, which originated in Japan thanks to the highly innovative discoveries of the exceptionally gifted and perceptive master Haruchika Noguchi (Tokyo, 1911-1976). You will find that you can actually feel healthy in a far deeper way than you could possibly have imagined. Living this kind of life is easy, if you know how to. ‘If you do not act with all your vigour, if you lack the awareness to give life to life through death, a state of health cannot be reached. It is possible to believe that the human being is alive thanks to its own will, but this is not so. A human being just lives; that is all. The spontaneous desire to live does not arise from the individual, but from a desire of Nature itself’ —Haruchika Noguchi (1911-1976), Founder of Seitai Culture ‘I am convinced that Seitai, Master Noguchi’s Legacy, is the most innovative and significant spiritual culture that Humanity has received this century’ —Narciso Yepes (1927-1997), Guitar player and Seitai practicer ‘Oh! What a surprise! All Japanese children speak Japanese. No need to worry! Planting the seeds of ability, with patience and repetition, the seed flourishes’ —Sinichi Suzuki (1898-1998), Creator of the Suzuki Method for understanding and learning music, philosopher and Seitai practicer ‘I know where I am now. But if I hadn’t come to know Seitai 10 years ago, I don’t now where I’d be. Maybe I wouldn’t be here’ —Ricardo Sanz (1968), Journalist, Seitai practicer

Book Records of Sui Dynasty

Book excerpt: Zi Zhi Tong Jian (Chinese: 资治通鉴;English: "Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance") is a pioneering reference work in Chinese historiography, published in 1084 in the form of a chronicle. In 1065 AD, Emperor Yingzong of Songordered the great historian Sima Guang (1019–1086 AD) to lead with other scholars such as his chief assistants Liu Shu, Liu Ban and Fan Zuyu, the compilation of a universal history of China. The task took 19 years to be completed, and, in 1084 AD, it was presented to his successor Emperor Shenzong of Song. The Zi Zhi Tong Jian records Chinese history from 403 BC to 959 AD, covering 16 dynasties and spanning across almost 1,400 years, and contains 294 volumes (巻) and about 3 million Chinese characters. The principal text of the Zizhi Tongjian was recorded on 294 Juan, or Volume (Chinese: 卷), which are scrolls corresponding to a volume, chapter, or section of the work. The text is a chronological narrative of the history of China from the Warring States to the Five Dynasties. Sima Guang left the traditional usage in Chinese historiography. For almost 1,000 years since the Shiji was written, standard Chinese dynastic histories had primarily divided chapters between annals (紀) of rulers, and biographies (傳) of officials. In Chinese terms, the book changed the format of histories from biographical style (紀傳體) to chronological style (編年體), which is better suited for analysis, activism and criticism. According to Wilkinson: "It had an enormous influence on later Chinese historical writing, either directly or through its many abbreviations, continuations, and adaptations. The 294 Juan sweep through 11 Chinese historical periods (Warring States, Qin, Western Han, Eastern Han, Three Kingdoms, Jin and the Sixteen Kingdoms, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties). It was one of the largest historical magna opera in history. The book consisted of 294 chapters, of which the following number describe each respective dynastic era: 1.5 chapters - Zhou (1046-256 BC) 2.3 chapters - Qin (221-207 BC) 3.60 chapters - Han (206 BC-220 AD) 4.10 chapters - Wei (220-265) 5.40 chapters - Jin (265-420) 6.16 chapters - Liu Song (420-479) 7.10 chapters - Qi (479-502) 8.22 chapters - Liang (502-557) 9.10 chapters - Chen (557-589) 10.8 chapters - Sui (589-618 AD) 11.81 chapters - Tang (618-907) 12.6 chapters - Later Liang (907-923) 13.8 chapters - Later Tang (923-936) 14.6 chapters - Later Jin (936-947) 15.4 chapters - Later Han (947-951) 16.5 chapters - Later Zhou (951-960) The book includes Volume 177 to 184 covering Sui Dynasty among a series of books of Zi Zhi Tong Jian.

Book Out of the Margins

Download or read book Out of the Margins written by Liangyan Ge and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel Water Margin (Shuihu zhuan), China's earliest full-length narrative in vernacular prose, first appeared in print in the sixteenth century. The tale of one hundred and eight bandit heroes evolved from a long oral tradition; in its novelized form, it played a pivotal role in the rise of Chinese vernacular fiction, which flourished during the late Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) periods. Liangyan Ge's multidimensional study considers the evolution of Water Margin and the rise of vernacular fiction against the background of the vernacularization of premodern Chinese literature as a whole. This gradual and arduous process, as the book convincingly shows, was driven by sustained contact and interaction between written culture and popular orality. Ge examines the stylistic and linguistic features of the novel against those of other works of early Chinese vernacular literature (stories, in particular), revealing an accretion of features typical of different historical periods and a prolonged and cumulative process of textualization. In addition to providing a meticulous philological study, his work offers a new reading of the novel that interprets some of its salient characteristics in terms of the interplay between audience, storytellers, and men of letters associated with popular orality.
