Book excerpt: Xian Tourism, Xian History, China. Travel Guide. As the capital of China's extremely historic Shaanxi province, Xian really is a wonderful place to learn about the region's past Chinese civilisations, which span more than 6,000 years and include many important dynasties. Xian was once the easterly terminus for the famous Silk Road camel caravans and has become a city of culture, standing right next to the world-famous Army of Terracotta Warriors, close to Lintong. The very heart of Xian is clearly marked by its enormous Bell Tower and Drum Tower, which date from the late 14th century and are surrounded by important shopping centres and leading entertainment venues. Xian's railway station lies to the north-east and is reached along the Jiefang Lu, where the city's Tourist Information Services Centre is located, along with the post office and the long-distance bus station. Although it would be true to say that the main draw card of Xian is its Terracotta Army, the city does have plenty of other quality attractions to offer tourists spending time here. The ancient City Walls add much character to Xian, while the Big Goose Pagoda (Dayan Ta) and Little Goose Pagoda (Xiaoyan Ta) are certainly further 'must sees'. Those with time on their hands would be advised to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the Hui Muslim Quarter, where innumerable sights and sounds are in good supply.Within the Hui Muslim Quarter, the Great Mosque (Daqingzhen Si) is a particular highlight and is the epitomy of traditional Chinese architecture at its very best, dating from the middle of the 18th century. Other striking structures within Xian include its oriental-style Drum Tower (Gu Lou) and Bell Tower (Zhong Lou, as well as its grand Taoist Temple of the Eight Immortals (Baxian An), near to the Zhongshan Gate (Zhongshan Mén).

Book The Tower of Myriad Mirrors

Download or read book The Tower of Myriad Mirrors written by Yueh Tung and published by U OF M CENTER FOR CHINESE STUDIES. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s most outrageous character—the magical Monkey who battles a hundred monsters—returns to the fray in this seventeenth-century sequel to the Buddhist novel Journey to the West. In The Tower of Myriad Mirrors, he defends his claim to enlightenment against a villain who induces hallucinations that take Monkey into the past, to heaven and hell, and even through a sex change. The villain turns out to be the personification of his own desires, aroused by his penetration of a female adversary’s body in Journey to the West. The Tower of Myriad Mirrors is the only novel of Tung Yüeh (1620–1686), a monk and Confucian scholar. Tung picks up the slapstick of the original tale and overlays it with Buddhist theory and bitter satire of the Ming government’s capitulation to the Manchus. After a nod to Journey’s storyteller format, Tung carries Monkey’s quest into an evocation of shifting psychological states rarely found in premodern fiction. An important though relatively unknown link in the development of the Chinese novel, and a window into late Ming intellectual history, The Tower of Myriad Mirrors further rewards by being a wonderful read.

Book The Imperial Capitals of China

Download or read book The Imperial Capitals of China written by Arthur Cotterell and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2008-05-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of China’s imperial capital cities reveals “a picaresque chronicle of dynastic succession and court intrigue” across millennia (Publishers Weekly). Throughout the long history of Imperial China, emperors designed their capital cities in ways that reveal the heart of their dynasty. The ley lines of these cities reveal religious preoccupations, while the design of important buildings tells us much about the cultural influences of the period. The Shang Emperor of the third century B.C. made obsessive—and ultimately fatal—attempts to engage the Immortals with cosmologically pleasing urban planning. Meanwhile, the Tang capital at Chang'an betrays the striking creativity and cultural receptiveness that earmark the era as a literary and artistic golden age. And the Forbidden City of fifteenth century Beijing still stands as testament to Ming dynasty architectural virtuosity. Arthur Cotterell provides an inside view of the rich array of characters, political and ideological tensions, and technological genius that defined the imperial cities of China, as each in turn is uncovered, explored, and celebrated. The oldest continuous civilization in existence today stands to become the most influential.

Book Between Mecca and Beijing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maris Boyd Gillette
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2000

  • Pages : 293 pages

Download or read book Between Mecca and Beijing written by Maris Boyd Gillette and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between Mecca and Beijing" examines how a community of urban Chinese Muslims uses consumption to position its members more favorably within the Chinese government's official paradigm for development. Residents of the old Muslim district in the ancient Chinese capital of Xi'an belong to an official minority (the Hui nationality) that has been classified by the state as "backward" in comparison to China's majority (Han) population. Though these Hui urbanites, like the vast majority of Chinese citizens, accept the assumptions about social evolution upon which such labels are based, they actively reject the official characterization of themselves as less civilized and modern than the Han majority. By selectively consuming goods and adopting fashions they regard as modern and non-Chinese--which include commodities and styles from both the West and the Muslim world--these Chinese Muslims seek to demonstrate that they are capable of modernizing without the guidance or assistance of the state. In so doing, they challenge one of the fundamental roles the Chinese Communist government has claimed for itself, that of guide and purveyor of modernity. Through a detailed study of the daily life--eating habits, dress styles, housing, marriage and death rituals, religious practices, education, family organization--of the Hui inhabitants of Xi'an, the author explores the effects of a state-sponsored ideology of progress on an urban Chinese Muslim neighborhood.
