Book excerpt: The purpose of this publication is to indicate that Xhosa iintsomi (folktales) are structured in such a way that many links or commonalities emerge when a comparison between tales is made. Orally transmitted literary forms had to endure much prejudice and were often not considered worthy of study. However, in many different cultures all over the world, the concept of oral literature and its functioning still exists. There are various forms of oral literature, but one of the best known is the folktale. Folklorist and formalist, Vladimir Propp (1895-1970), aimed to describe the story structure of Russian folktales according to a linear sequence of the acts of the characters. Using one hundred folktales, he illustrated how the storylines of these tales are remarkably similar - identical actions are often performed, only by different characters. The somewhat surprising and obvious links between Propp's material and Xhosa iintsomi prompted the choice of Propp's model as the departure point for this comparative study. Forty'five Xhosa folktales were chosen because of their literary quality and suitability to Propp's methodology as a tool to organise the Xhosa data on the grounds of structural features that characterise this genre.

And, although the role Lord Chelmsford played in the Anglo-Zulu War has been recounted in exhaustive detail, his earlier experience against the Xhosa has rarely been explored in the same intensive way. That is why Stephen Manning’s absorbing study of these colonial campaigns and Chelmsford’s part in them is so timely and valuable. Chelmsford’s military career and Britain’s troubled relationship with the Xhosa people came together in 1878 with the conclusion of the 9th Frontier War, in which Chelmsford commanded the victorious British forces. This conflict is vividly described here. Perhaps Chelmsford learned the wrong lessons from his struggle with the Xhosa because his initial handling of British forces during the Anglo-Zulu War resulted in disaster at the Battle of Isandlwana. Although Chelmsford regained the initiative and his forces defeated the Zulus at Gingindlovu and Ulundi, his reputation never recovered. Stephen Manning’s account of Chelmsford’s South African campaigns gives us a fascinating insight into the military and political history of southern Africa in the period and provides a fresh view of Chelmsford himself – as a man of his time and as a military commander.

Book excerpt: The consumption of indigenous beer is a widespread and long-standing feature of many African societies, a practice of both historical and contemporary significance. Among the rural, Xhosa-speaking people of South Africa''s Eastern Cape province, maize beer became increasingly important in the context of early twentieth century colonialism, and a range of new beer drinking rituals developed. This coincided with state neglect of black rural areas and with economic and demographic changes that led to the emergence of co-operative relations within neighbourhood groups as a vital element of homestead production. With the entrenchment of the apartheid regime from the late 1940s onward, the maintenance of a rural homestead, agricultural practices, and an agrarian lifestyle became one way to resist the injustices of apartheid and fuller incorporation into the wider society. In this respect, beer rituals became a crucial mechanism through which to develop and maintain rural social and economic relations, to inculcate the values that supported these, and to provide a viable though fragile view of the world that afforded an alternative to the disillusionment and suffering associated with black urban areas. Using an anthropological analysis based on a combination of Bourdieu''s practice theory with the anthropology of performance, this book demonstrates the way beer drinking rituals worked towards these aims, the various types of rituals that developed, and how they sought to instill a rural Xhosa habitus in the face of almost overwhelming odds.
