Book excerpt: Anabasis is Xenophon's most famous book. The seven-tome book of the Anabasis describes The March of the Ten Thousand and their return to Greece. Xenophon accompanied the Ten Thousand, a large army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger, who intended to seize the throne of Persia from his brother, Artaxerxes II. The narration of the journey is Xenophon's best known work, and "one of the great adventures in human history".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anabasis, or Expedition of Cyrus, and the Memorabilia of Socrates: Literally Tr From the Greek of Xenophon A Biographical Notice of Xenophon is prefixed to the second volume of this translation. Some remarks are here offered on the authorship of the "Anabasis." A passage of the "Hellenica," in which it is said that a narrative of the Expedition of Cyrus was written by Themistogenes of Syracuse, has given rise to the question whether the account of that expedition which we now have is that of Xenophon or that of Themistogenes. When Xenophon, in the course of his narrative of events relating to Greece, comes to the time at which the expedition of Cyrus took place, he says, "How Cyrus collected an army, how he marched up the country with it against his brother, how the battle was fought, how Cyrus was killed, and how the Greeks afterwards effected a safe retreat to the sea, has been written by Themistogenes the Syracusan." If the phrase containing it be translated, with Morus, quae nominatur aut laudatur in Histora Graeca, a sense is given to the verb for which there is no authority; and if it be rendered, with most interpreters, quae inserta legitur historiis Graecis, that is said which is not true. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent book for anyone interested in Ancient Greek warfare, or just a rattling good tale.― The NYMAS Review One of the foundational works of military history and political philosophy, and an inspiration for Alexander the Great, the Anabasis of Cyrus recounts the epic story of the Ten Thousand, a band of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to overthrow his brother, Artaxerxes, king of Persia and the most powerful man on earth. It shows how Cyrus' army was assembled covertly and led from the coast of Asia Minor all the way to Babylon; how the Greeks held the field against a superior Persian force; how Cyrus was killed, leaving the Greeks stranded deep within enemy territory; and how many of them overcame countless dangers and found their way back to Greece. Their remarkable success was due especially to the wily and decisive leadership of Xenophon himself, a student of Socrates who had joined the Ten Thousand and, after most of the Greek generals had been murdered, rallied the despondent Greeks, won a position of leadership, and guided them wisely through myriad obstacles. In this new translation of the Anabasis, Wayne Ambler achieves a masterful combination of liveliness and a fidelity to the original uncommon in other versions. Accompanying Ambler's translation is a penetrating interpretive essay by Eric Buzzetti, one that shows Xenophon to be an author who wove a philosophic narrative into his dramatic tale. The translation and interpretive essay encourage renewed study of the Anabasis as a work of political philosophy. They also celebrate its high adventure and its hero's adroit decision-making under the most pressing circumstances.
