Book excerpt: We thirst for purpose, clarity, fulfillment and direction in our lives. How do we go about sorting through all the self-help books, talks and seminars? The common, normal solutions to navigating life are focused on strengths, gifts, and passion. The reality is quite contrarian to what seems to make sense. The revelations is found in the divine fingerprints of all that we are: our life story, what energized and de-energizes us, our rhythms, and even our pain and weaknesses. It’s a different way of approaching clarity of life.At the heart of this book is the understanding that a life filled with passion is radically different than what many of us have been taught. Often it’s not in the how do we find life but a commitment to a passionate pursuit. Neurologically, if we ask the question how our brains can’t tap the new domains, our brains resorts to typical default solutions that are often inadequate. The way to live life to its fullest is found in abnormal rhythms and principles, that have the tension of questions more than answers. It’s a place where strategy is important but an ethos where relationships trump vision. The way we are invited to live life to its fullest is found with a contrarian set of beliefs, values and questions. It’s not about quick fixes and simplistic “solutions.”. God works through our weaknesses and our failures. Real vision is found through relationships with God and with other people. Obedience is better than passion. These contrarian concepts have been presented and tested in many business and non-profit settings, including Willow Creek’s Leadership Summit where Dave gave a keynote address. The tone of this book was established as Dave thought about what he would want to share with his four third culture children and future leaders. It was Dave’s heart that they would walk a life where they experienced life to it’s fullest, exploring the new and old domains of world that is constantly changing.

Book The Sacred Year

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mike Yankoski
  • Publisher : HarperChristian + ORM
  • Release : 2014-09-23
  • ISBN : 0718022424
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book The Sacred Year written by Mike Yankoski and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his life and writing, Michael Yankoski walks a tightrope between action and contemplation, and, behold, in ways we can all learn from, he manages to find a sort of essential balance." —Philip Yancey, author of What's So Amazing About Grace "This book is a joy to the soul and a delight to the heart. It is destined to become a classic within the genre of contemporary spiritual and religious writing." —Phyllis Tickle, compiler of The Divine Hours Frustrated and disillusioned with his life as a Christian motivational speaker, Michael Yankoski was determined to stop merely talking about living a life of faith and start experiencing it. The result was a year of focused engagement with spiritual practices—both ancient and modern—that fundamentally reshaped and revived his life. By contemplating apples for an hour before tasting them (attentiveness), eating on just $2.00 a day (simplicity), or writing letters of thanks (gratitude), Michael discovered a whole new vitality and depth through the intentional life. Guided by the voice of Father Solomon—a local monk—Yankoski's Sacred Year slowly transforms his life. Both entertaining and profound, his story will resonate with those who wish to deepen their own committed faith as well as those who are searching—perhaps for the first time—for their own authentic encounter with the Divine.

Book The Road Trip that Changed the World

Download or read book The Road Trip that Changed the World written by Mark Sayers and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can’t find no satisfaction? There’s no shortage of prescriptions for restlessness out there: Seek adventure. Live your life. Don’t hold back. Sound familiar? The Road Trip that Changed the World is a book challenging the contemporary conviction that personal freedom and self-fulfillment are the highest good. Like the characters in a Jack Kerouac novel, we’ve dirtied the dream of white picket fences with exhaust fumes. The new dream is the open road—and freedom. Yet we still desire the solace of faith. We like the concept of the sacred, but unwittingly subscribe to secularized, westernized spirituality. We’re convinced that there is a deeper plot to this thing called life, yet watered-down, therapeutic forms of religion are all we choose to swallow, and our personal story trumps any larger narrative. This is the non-committal culture of the road. Though driving on freely, we have forgotten where we’re headed. Jesus said His road is narrow. He wasn’t some aimless nomad. He had more than just a half tank of gas—He had passion, objectives, and a destination. Do you?

Download or read book Small Cloud Rising written by Dave Gibbons and published by . This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just after 5000 people crowded into Anaheim Convention for the Easter Services, God asked Dave two questions that wrecked him and took him to places around the world to search answers to these questions: "Is this it?" (IT=SUCCESS) "What would the church look like if wasn't contained on a piece of land?" In the wake of these two questions, Newsong strategically went from a church focused on growing bigger to a church focused on growing deeper, which has led to its thriving global ministry today. In Small Cloud Rising, Gibbons takes us on his 10-year journey of a reimagined church. Shedding much contemporary church-growth strategy, Gibbons learned to measure success through paradoxical metrics: Small is big. One is the greatest number. Reach the fringes for maximum impact. Neighbor means someone who's not just like you. Misfits belong together. Pain can be power. Gibbons watched Newsong transform and rise as the ancient future church. Looking at how God designed us as a community (ancient/past) and what He desired us to become (future). Along this path of change, he learned to see like Elijah, scanning the horizon after years of drought. The prophet saw a small cloud rising, no bigger than a fist, a nearly invisible phenomenon that would soon change everything. It would be small in size but bring a storm that would end the drought.

Book excerpt: The early church turned the world upside down. With only a few followers of Jesus filled with the Holy Spirit, the gospel message of love and transformation spread like wildfire; it could not be contained or held back. What was the secret—the “Jesus way”—behind such a radical movement of the gospel? And what would it take for a spiritual renewal to happen today—in your church, your community, your world, and your own heart? Gerard Long, president of Alpha USA, has seen that spiritual awakenings tend to occur when God’s people understand their calling and prepare through prayer, personal renewal, and action. In Awakening, he offers a compelling vision for a “Jesus way” of widespread spiritual renewal, equipping you to better love people into the Kingdom of God. You’ll become empowered to live the abundant life given to us in Christ—and step out in faith to fulfill God’s calling.

It will inspire everyone to realize that we are capable of so much more than we have pre-conditioned for. Creativity is not in one special place--and it is not in one special person.
