Book Travel Writing and Empire

Download or read book Travel Writing and Empire written by Steven H. Clark and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel writing has become central to postcolonial studies. This book provides an introduction to the genre, particularly to its dynamics of power and representation, and the degree to which it has promoted ideologies of empire. The book combines detailed evaluations of major contemporary models of analysis - new historicism, travelling theory, and post-colonial studies - with a series of specific studies detailing the complicity of the genre with a history of violent incursion from Columbus' reports from the New World through to the nomadism of postmodern travelogue.Among its particular areas of concern are* 'Othering' discourses - of cannibalism and infanticide* the production of colonial knowledge - geographic, medicinal, zoological* the role of sexual anxiety in the constructionof the gendered, travelling body* the interplay between imperial and domestic spheres* reappropration of alien discourse by indigenous cultures.Post-colonial studies has concentrated on travellers as conduits of erasure and appropriation. This book resists the temptation to think in terms of a simple monolithic Eurocentrism and offers a more complex reading of texts produced before, during and after periods of imperial ascendency. In doing so, it provides a more nuanced account of the hegemonic functions of travel-writing. As such it is necessary reading for students and academics of cultural studies, literary theory, anthropology and history.

Book Nietzsche Freud Benn and the Azure Spell of Liguria

Download or read book Nietzsche Freud Benn and the Azure Spell of Liguria written by Martina Kolb and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean region of Liguria, where the Maritime Alps sweep down to the coasts of northwest Italy and southeast France, the Riviera, marks the intersection of two of Europe's major cultural landscapes. Remote, liminal, compact, and steep, the terrain has influenced many international authors and artists. In this study, Martina Kolb traces Liguria's specific impact on the works of three seminal German-writing modernists – Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Gottfried Benn – whose encounters with Ligurian lands and seas led to an innovative geopoetic fusion of word and world. Kolb examines each of these authors' acquired affinities with Ligurian and Provençal landscapes and seascapes, revisiting and reassessing the long tradition of northern longing for a Mediterranean south. She also shows how Freud and Benn followed in the footsteps of Nietzsche in his most prolific years, a topic which has received little critical attention to date. Nietzsche, Freud, Benn, and the Azure Spell of Liguria offers a fresh approach to these writers' groundbreaking literary achievements and profound interest in poetic expression as cathartic self-liberation.

Book Writing the North of the North L criture du Nord du Nord Den Norden des Nordens be schreiben

Download or read book Writing the North of the North L criture du Nord du Nord Den Norden des Nordens be schreiben written by Annie Bourguignon and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2019-11-29 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expression “North of the North” refers both to an objective, geographical reality – the territories situated at the highest latitudes on our planet – and to a subjective, mental construction which came into being many centuries ago and has been developed, modified and differentiated ever since. The chapters in the present volume examine various aspects of that concept, analysing texts and works of art from a range of regions and periods.

Book A Library of the World s Best Literature Ancient and Modern Vol XLIII Forty Five Volumes Dictionary of Authors K Z

Download or read book A Library of the World s Best Literature Ancient and Modern Vol XLIII Forty Five Volumes Dictionary of Authors K Z written by Charles Dudley Warner and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Volume 43 is Part Two of a dictionary of authors-from Hans Vilhelm Kaalund to Ulrich Zwingli-that serves as a handy, condensed reference to the authors quoted in the first 40 volumes, as well as a guide to thousands more authors whose works are notable but not featured in this set.
