Book excerpt: "TransUrbanism is urbanism plus transformation. TransUrbanism is urbanism plus globalization. The city is no longer a clearly localizable spatial unit, but has transformed into an "urban field," a collection of activities instead of a material structure. Cities today are in a state of continuous decomposition, but are also continually reorganizing and rearranging themselves, expanding and shrinking." "TransUrbanism is a design strategy that allows cities to organize themselves as complex systems, where small local structures incorporate global flows."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Xaveer De Geyter Architects written by Geert Bekaert and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing urban sprawl throughout Western Europe is giving rise to more and more areas characterized by a diffuse urbanization or urban network. In After Sprawl, the Brussels-based firm of Xaveer de Geyter Architects examines this phenomenon by focusing on six such areas: London, England; Randstad, Holland; Brussels-Antwerp-Ghent, Belgium; the Ruhr area, Germany; Zurich-Basle, Switzerland; and the Veneto region, Italy. Their research distills a method for analysing the spatial hallmarks of today's city, replacing old urban strategies with new methodologies appropriate to the new questions being raised by these new types of cities. With a modest batch of projects to their name, Xaveer de Geyter Architects have amassed an international reputation for unpretentious architecture and urban design born of a discerning and radical strategy. De Geyter himself is noted for his longterm practice with OMA, the office of Rem Koolhaas.

Book The Urbanism of Exception

Download or read book The Urbanism of Exception written by Martin J. Murray and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the conventional (modernist-inspired) understanding of urbanization as a universal process tied to the ideal-typical model of the modern metropolis with its origins in the grand Western experience of city-building. At the start of the twenty-first century, the familiar idea of the 'city' - or 'urbanism' as we know it - has experienced such profound mutations in both structure and form that the customary epistemological categories and prevailing conceptual frameworks that predominate in conventional urban theory are no longer capable of explaining the evolving patterns of city-making. Global urbanism has increasingly taken shape as vast, distended city-regions, where urbanizing landscapes are increasingly fragmented into discontinuous assemblages of enclosed enclaves characterized by global connectivity and concentrated wealth, on the one side, and distressed zones of neglect and impoverishment, on the other. These emergent patterns of what might be called enclave urbanism have gone hand-in-hand with the new modes of urban governance, where the crystallization of privatized regulatory regimes has effectively shielded wealthy enclaves from public oversight and interference.

Book excerpt: Diversity and density in housing today Accomodation of diversity and the creation of urban density are a focus of world-wide building and planning activities today. This book combines the architectural and urban scales to demonstrate that it is a specific quality, urban intensity, which determines the success of housing. The authors provide a typology of housing according to the ways in which diversity and density are created. Comparisons with historical models and critical appraisals based on the authors’ unique standing give ample information on the pros and cons of major types of housing, their pitfalls and successful examples. Newly created sets of drawings, from floor plans to spectacular 3D aerial views of the buildings in their urban contexts, accompany each of the more than twenty case studies that are described and analyzed in detail. The approach taken here relates to many pressing issues in contemporary housing, including the avoidance of urban sprawl, the revival of city centers and the ongoing search for innovative housing types. A qualitative approach to diversity and density in housing A concept that unites architectural and urban design A wide range of original drawings of benchmark case studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a while now the "Young British Artists" have been soaking up the international limelight thanks to a sensibility that is at once outrageous and thoughtful. Architecture, of course, always takes a while to catch up to the other arts, but now, finally, Britain has emerged as one of the world's most fertile breeding grounds for international design talent. Catalyzed by such leading international architecture schools as the Architectural Association and the Bartlett, a new wave of architects, from home and abroad, is combining local and global styles in exciting new buildings and projects. Post-Imperial British designers are indeed synthesizing foreign cultures with Western conditions in an entirely original way. Profiling Britain's most dynamic and intriguing practices, British Built features projects by S333, Caruso St John, Alison Brooks, Foreign Office Architects (FOA), muf, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Gollifer Langston, de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM), Kathryn Findlay, FAT, Adjaye Associates, Sergison Bates, Klein Dytham Architects (KDa), and Deborah Saunt David Hills Architects. British Built, the sequel to our successful SuperDutch, includes studio profiles and essays outlining the unique characteristics of the British architect working today and presenting an even younger generation of architects whose stars are only just appearing on the horizon, including atopia, softroom, dECOi, and Tonkin Liu, among many others.
