Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a fascinating look at the science of sex and what makes people male or female, this book explains dozens of intersex conditions—such as hermaphroditism, Klinefelter syndrome, and androgen insensitivity syndrome—and includes personal interviews with people living with these conditions telling their surprising and often heart-wrenching stories. Even doctors and scientists are not entirely sure if external genitalia, internal sex organs, chromosomes, DNA, environment, or some combination define a person's sex, but this examination shows that sex is not an either-or proposition: not girl/boy, XX/XY—there are babies born XYY, XXX, or with any dozen or more known variations in the X or Y chromosomes. The history and the current treatment for intersex conditions as well as the options that are available today for the ambiguous child are covered in this captivating account that truly shows what it means to be human.

Book excerpt: From imaginary numbers to the fourth dimension and beyond, mathematics has always been about imagining things that seem impossible at first glance. In x+y, Eugenia Cheng draws on the insights of higher-dimensional mathematics to reveal a transformative new way of talking about the patriarchy, mansplaining and sexism: a way that empowers all of us to make the world a better place. Using precise mathematical reasoning to uncover everything from the sexist assumptions that make society a harder place for women to live to the limitations of science and statistics in helping us understand the link between gender and society, Cheng's analysis replaces confusion with clarity, brings original thinking to well worn arguments - and provides a radical, illuminating and liberating new way of thinking about the world and women's place in it.

In two generations, the female population has grieved, pulled together and moved on, and life really is pretty good - if you're a girl. It's not so great if you're a boy, but fourteen-year-old River wouldn't know that. Until she met Mason, she thought they were extinct.

Book excerpt: Examining changing role models for masculine identity--from cowboy in the 1950s to Terminator in the 1990s, from flesh-and-blood man to machine--this book suggests that men need new role models and that sufficient room needs to be left for the expression of male vulnerability, a psychic space that would accept attitudes and behaviors traditionally labeled as "feminine." This new model, Badinter argues, may reduce the profound effects of homophobia and misogyny.

And it's a number that says her father is probably dead. Against all odds, Ruby has survived the catastrophic onset of the killer rain. Two weeks after the radio started broadcasting the warning, "It's in the rain. It's fatal and there's no cure," the drinkable water is running out. Ruby's left with two options: persevere on her own, or embark on a treacherous journey across the country to find her father-if he's even still alive.

Book Selected Genetic Papers of J B S Haldane Routledge Revivals

This book was released on 2022-05-29 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this is a compilation of several important papers that have contributed to the foundation of population genetics, evolutionary biology and human genetics. The collection includes Haldane’s first paper in genetics, which was published in 1915, reporting the first case of linkage in a mammal, and - fifty years later, in 1965 - his last paper in genetics on selection for a single pair of allelomorphs with complete replacement. Haldane's Rule, the only idea named after him, was published in 1922 and is still valid today. Other papers, which include many Haldane firsts, such as the first estimation of a human mutation rate, first human gene map, first papers in population genetics, first estimate of the probability of fixation of a new mutation, and first measurement of mutation impact on a population, leading to the "genetic load" concept, are included. The volume also includes a paper presenting an ancient logical system for interpreting scientific results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A major piece of work . . . a classic. There is no other book like it.” —Norman Schofield, Washington University “The authors succeed brilliantly in tackling a large number of important questions concerning the interaction among voters and elected representatives in the political arena, using a common, rigorous language.” —Antonio Merlo, University of Pennsylvania Positive Political Theory II: Strategy and Structure is the second volume in Jeffrey Banks and David Austen-Smith’s monumental study of the links between individual preferences and collective choice. The book focuses on representative systems, including both elections and legislative decision-making processes, clearly connecting individual preferences to collective outcomes. This book is not a survey. Rather, it is the coherent, cumulative result of the authors’ brilliant efforts to indirectly connect preferences to collective choice through strategic behaviors such as agenda-selection and voting. The book will be an invaluable reference and teaching tool for economists and political scientists, and an essential companion to any scholar interested in the latest theoretical advances in positive political theory.

Book BCC Algebras

    Book Details:
  • Author : Janus Thomys
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2022-12-23
  • ISBN : 1000804283
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book BCC Algebras written by Janus Thomys and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subjects described in this book are BCC-algebras and an even wider class of weak BCC-algebras. The aim of the book is to summarize the achievements to date in the subject and to present them in the form of a logically created theory. Through appropriate grading and a precise description of the steps of the proofs, this theory is easily assimilated, and it should not take too long for the reader to learn about it. We begin with the motivation for their creation, many examples, and basic results used later in the book. Then we deal with the constructions of BCC-algebras and calculate the numbers of their subalgebras. The author describes the so-called solid weak BCC-algebras. They have some properties of BCI-algebras, but this requires completely new, often difficult, proofs. The important subclasses of weak BCC-algebras and the relationships between them are presented with many examples. BCC-Algebras is intended for researchers dealing with abstract algebra and for logicians working on the border between logic and algebra. The book is also of interest to students interested in the theory of (weak) BCC-algebras or simply in abstract algebra. The structure of the book makes it possible to discover topics that require further research, which, depending on the degree of difficulty, may be completed with a thesis or dissertation.
