These properties are of both practical and fundamental importance. While the behavior in this fluctuation-dominated situation is independent of most microscopic details, it shows a large variety that is characterized by the different qualitative conditions in the bulk (good or theta solvent, etc) and near the surface (desorbing or adsorbing, etc). The main focus of the book is on powerful, recent theoretical developments that have -despite the long history of the field — increased our understanding considerably during the last few years. The close relationship to surface critical phenomena is explained, making it possible to apply advanced methods of field theory. A self-contained introduction in these approaches, and their application to polymer physics, are given assuming only a basic knowledge of statistical mechanics. A detailed consideration of ideal (random walk-type) chains near surfaces serves as a first orientation. Much of the materials have not appeared previously in book form. This text is the first to give an introduction simultaneously to the renormalization group, short distance expansions and conformal invariance in critical systems with a surface. This book will be of interest to physicists and chemists active in the field of polymers and to theoretical physicists working in statistical mechanics, critical phenomena and field theory. By the year 1950 the defini tion of fibre bundle had been clearly formulated, the homotopy classifica tion of fibre bundles achieved, and the theory of characteristic classes of fibre bundles developed by several mathematicians, Chern, Pontrjagin, Stiefel, and Whitney. Steenrod's book, which appeared in 1950, gave a coherent treatment of the subject up to that time. About 1955 Milnor gave a construction of a universal fibre bundle for any topological group. This construction is also included in Part I along with an elementary proof that the bundle is universal. During the five years from 1950 to 1955, Hirzebruch clarified the notion of characteristic class and used it to prove a general Riemann-Roch theorem for algebraic varieties. This was published in his Ergebnisse Monograph. A systematic development of characteristic classes and their applications to manifolds is given in Part III and is based on the approach of Hirze bruch as modified by Grothendieck.

Nevertheless, doubts have been expressed about the use of a continuum in a science squarely based on observation and measurement. An exact science requires that qualitative arguments must be reduced to quantitative statements. The observability of a continuum can be reduced from qualitative arguments to quantitative statements by means of information theory.Information theory was developed during the last decades within electrical communications, but it is almost unknown in physics. The closest approach to information theory in physics is the calculus of propositions, which has been used in books on the frontier of quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity. Principles of information theory are discussed in this book. The ability to think readily in terms of a finite number of discrete samples is developed over many years of using information theory and digital computers, just as the ability to think readily in terms of a continuum is developed by long use of differential calculus.
