Book excerpt: Atlas and Tables for Emission Spectrographic Analysis of Rare Earth Elements focuses on the analysis of rare earths with the Zeiss Q 24 spectrograph or with instruments of similar dispersion. The book first offers information on the division of the spectra of rare earth elements and Sc and Y into three groups. The spectra of Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er have lines that, however, do not form characteristic line groups. The text underscores that in preparing the Atlas, the spectral pure-grade rare earth oxides sold by the Johnson & Matthey Co. were considered. Through the help of their spectra, the usable analysis lines and the wavelength values of the interfering spectral lines are created. The operating and photographic conditions are tabulated. The book stresses that for each rare earth, the analysis lines are provided in order of decreasing wavelength. The number located in the lower left corner for each analysis line indicates its relative intensity. The fifteen columns contain the interfering lines of other rare earths and of Sc and Y. The interfering lines are created through the use of the double projector of the Optica Milano Co. and the Gatterer Spectrum. The text is a great source of information for readers wanting to analyze rare earths with the Zeiss Q 24 spectrograph or with instruments of similar dispersion.

Over the twelve-year history of this meeting, it has continually grown and now ranks as one of the major technical meetings in the field of spectroscopy. The scope of the program itself represents a balance between research applications and control applications, between applied and the more fundamental aspects of spectroscopy. Papers are presented each year in the specialty areas of X -ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, Raman, EPR, and NMR spectroscopy. In many instances over the years, excellent work has been re ported at this symposium and no further publication was made. These reports were then essentially lost for further reference. It is the purpose of this publication to provide a source of reference for the papers presented at the 12th Annual Symposium. This first attempt at publishing a proceedings does not include the entire program. Several papers could not be given company clear ance for publication, and several more were intended for verbal presentation only and were never written for publication. I, as Coordinator of the Symposium, would like to express my gratitude to the Symposium Committee, John Ferraro, Elwin Davis, Joseph Ziomek, John Kapetan, L. S. Gray, Jr., Russell J. Hansen, J. A. Book excerpt: In recent years the x-ray fluorescence technique has become increasingly important in modern analysis and production control; it can be classified as a spectroscopical method for the determination of the elemental com position. Many articles treat this method; however, there exists no modern textbook suitable for the beginner as well as the practician and theoretician. In this monograph the author intends to fill this need to present the prin ciples of x-ray fluorescence analysis and to develop a theoretical under standing of the technique. Both principles and theory w.ill be treated exten sively, for they are the basis for successful practical application of the method. X-ray fluorescence, on the other hand, is often carried out exclusively because of its practical usefulness. For this reason theoretical investigations are used exclusively as a basis for practical work and the multitude of applications, which constitute the value of the x-ray fluores cence method, will be explained on the basis of simple theory. The idea to write this monograph originated and developed when efforts to train coworkers required a more complete treatise. I would like to thank the elBA Aktiengesellschaft in Basel, where this work originated, for generous support and permission to publish the book. The head of the Physics Department, Dr. E.
