In Wyoming, the night skies make you feel small in the best possible way. With little light pollution and unobstructed views, the stars in the Cowboy State will seem just within reach. Wyoming offers plenty of places to stargaze, from the otherworldly Devils Tower in the northeast corner to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks in the northwest corner and Vedauwoo Recreation Area in the south. Many of the state's parks and national sites offer stargazing tours and other astronomical learning opportunities. Book The Skies We Roam Beneath

Download or read book The Skies We Roam Beneath written by Kasey L. Storey and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have always been captivated by Wyoming's skies, spellbound and mystified by their brilliant splendor, and dedicated to putting them on the page, so that people who have never wandered into the state can experience their beauty. But, as I began my writing, I found that not everyone viewed the sky in the same way I did. Where one person saw hues of orange, another saw hues of pink. Where one person saw beauty and expansiveness, another saw desolation and emptiness. I ultimately realized that people grew up and lived beneath the same skies as I did, but that their experiences and perceptions all varied. In that moment, I decided that I wanted to write a collection of four short stories, one for each of Wyoming's very different seasons, and that I wanted to make the characters and narratives as diverse as the weather conditions. I sought to create a small window into Wyoming's world, one that showed how different people can be, even when they are from the same place, resulting in a collection of contemporary and realistic stories about everyday people and the everyday lives they lead beneath Wyoming's skies.

Download or read book Billionaire Wilderness written by Justin Farrell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Billionaire Wilderness offers an unprecedented look inside the world of the ultra-wealthy and their relationship to the natural world, showing how the ultra-rich use nature to resolve key predicaments in their lives. Justin Farrell immerses himself in Teton County, Wyoming--both the richest county in the United States and the county with the nation's highest level of income inequality--to investigate interconnected questions about money, nature, and community in the twenty-first century. Farrell draws on three years of in-depth interviews with "ordinary" millionaires and the world's wealthiest billionaires, four years of in-person observation in the community, and original quantitative data to provide comprehensive and unique analytical insight on the ultra-wealthy. He also interviewed low-income workers who could speak to their experiences as employees for and members of the community with these wealthy people. He finds that the wealthy leverage nature to climb even higher on the socioeconomic ladder, and they use their engagement with nature and rural people as a way of creating more virtuous and deserving versions of themselves. Billionaire Wilderness demonstrates that our contemporary understanding of the relationship between the ultra-wealthy and the environment is empirically shallow, and our reliance on reports of national economic trends distances us from the real experiences of these people and their local communities"--

Book The Solace of Open Spaces

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gretel Ehrlich
  • Publisher : Open Road Media
  • Release : 2017-02-21
  • ISBN : 1504042883
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book The Solace of Open Spaces written by Gretel Ehrlich and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These transcendent, lyrical essays on the West announced Gretel Ehrlich as a major American writer—“Wyoming has found its Whitman” (Annie Dillard). Poet and filmmaker Gretel Ehrlich went to Wyoming in 1975 to make the first in a series of documentaries when her partner died. Ehrlich stayed on and found she couldn’t leave. The Solace of Open Spaces is a chronicle of her first years on “the planet of Wyoming,” a personal journey into a place, a feeling, and a way of life. Ehrlich captures both the otherworldly beauty and cruelty of the natural forces—the harsh wind, bitter cold, and swiftly changing seasons—in the remote reaches of the American West. She brings depth, tenderness, and humor to her portraits of the peculiar souls who also call it home: hermits and ranchers, rodeo cowboys and schoolteachers, dreamers and realists. Together, these essays form an evocative and vibrant tribute to the life Ehrlich chose and the geography she loves. Originally written as journal entries addressed to a friend, The Solace of Open Spaces is raw, meditative, electrifying, and uncommonly wise. In prose “as expansive as a Wyoming vista, as charged as a bolt of prairie lightning,” Ehrlich explores the magical interplay between our interior lives and the world around us (Newsday).
