Download or read book Guide to Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Framework for K-12 Science Education and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) describe a new vision for science learning and teaching that is catalyzing improvements in science classrooms across the United States. Achieving this new vision will require time, resources, and ongoing commitment from state, district, and school leaders, as well as classroom teachers. Successful implementation of the NGSS will ensure that all K-12 students have high-quality opportunities to learn science. Guide to Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards provides guidance to district and school leaders and teachers charged with developing a plan and implementing the NGSS as they change their curriculum, instruction, professional learning, policies, and assessment to align with the new standards. For each of these elements, this report lays out recommendations for action around key issues and cautions about potential pitfalls. Coordinating changes in these aspects of the education system is challenging. As a foundation for that process, Guide to Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards identifies some overarching principles that should guide the planning and implementation process. The new standards present a vision of science and engineering learning designed to bring these subjects alive for all students, emphasizing the satisfaction of pursuing compelling questions and the joy of discovery and invention. Achieving this vision in all science classrooms will be a major undertaking and will require changes to many aspects of science education. Guide to Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards will be a valuable resource for states, districts, and schools charged with planning and implementing changes, to help them achieve the goal of teaching science for the 21st century.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School districts across the country have spent a significant amount of resources to train teachers to successfully integrate technology into the classroom, however actual implementation has been inconsistent at best. A key reason for this is a lack of high-quality teacher training. Professional development programs must be developed to assist teachers in the successful integration of technology into the classroom and to utilize the technology to improve classroom instruction. In this research, the effectiveness of an instructional technology professional development program designed to train teachers and administrators how to integrate WEdGate products into the classroom was studied. WEdGate is an Internet portal developed by the Wyoming Department of Education to provide support for standards-based planning, instruction, and assessments. This training program utilized components that research indicates are important if successful implementation is to take place: administrative support, managing the training process, and on-going or continuous training. This study included five Wyoming school districts that provided the professional development training and five Wyoming school districts that did not provide the training. Data for this research were collected from two sources. A survey was developed to determine the teacher and principal perceptions of the effectiveness of different aspects of the training. Data were also electronically gathered to determine the amount of usage of three of the WEdGate products. This study was consistent with other research regarding the importance of administrative support, managing the training process, and continuous training in effective professional development programs. The results of this study indicated the training did increase the use of the WEdGate products by the teachers. Another significant finding in this study was that the WEdGate product that received the most amount of training time was also the product now most used by the staff. This study has implications for the implementation process of professional development programs. School districts may wish to use a similar training process when implementing new programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wyoming's colleges offer much more than academic and occupational technical degrees and certificates. In 2000, 27,703 Wyoming citizens, age 25 years and older, did not have a high school diploma. For this 12.14% of Wyoming's population, the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at each of the colleges is designed to equip these adults with the skills needed for more productive living in society as well as other goals like earning a GED (General Educational Development) certificate, pursuing postsecondary training and/or employment-related training. For those college students who need help before taking a college-level course, each Wyoming college offers a series of courses in mathematics, English, reading and study skills. Proposals to improve performance in the next two years include: (1) Place administrative responsibility for adult basic education (ABE) and general educational development programs (GED) with the Wyoming Community College Commission; (2) Replace some of the current federal funding support for ABE and GED with state funding; (3) Enhanced equipment for ABE/GED programs; (4) Develop and carry out a marketing program that provides information about the community college system and raises the awareness of what the colleges offer; (5) Improve affordability and access with increased student aid; and (6) Provide additional technology support for students in ABE/GED and developmental courses.
