Book Genealogy of the Family of Winchell in America

Download or read book Genealogy of the Family of Winchell in America written by Alexander Winchell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Family of Winchell in America: Embracing the Etymology and History of the Name and the Outlines of Some Collateral Genealogies The compiler has at length the satisfaction of laying before his numerous cousins the results of his genealogical investigations. Though expanded far beyond his expectations, he has to regret the omission of much biographical matter and the incompleteness of the genealogical statistics. The data published, however, embrace all that has been received; though the utmost diligence has been exerted to secure full returns. Those who find their genealogies incomplete will understand the cause of it. Every living head of a family whose address is here given has been applied to for information. The correspondence has extended to multitudes of single persons. All who did not respond at once, have been addressed by letter or circular from two to four times. The total number of genealogical letters written since Sept. 14, 1867, is 771. The total number of circulars sent out is 2015. A few have interested themselves actively and generously; and multitudes have responded promptly. The great mass of details has been culled from 512 letters. The compiler, however, has consulted many original records, including 48 volumes of land records and several volumes of church and town records of old Windsor; and 36 volumes of land records at Simsbury. The public records of Kensington, Torrington, Suffield and Topsham, (Me.) have also been searched at his request. He has had access to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England, Stiles' History of Ancient Windsor, Andrews' History of New Britain, the various published colonial documents of New England and New York, and numerous collateral works supplied by the library of the University of Michigan. The library of the Connecticut Historical Society, at Hartford, has afforded the opportunity to consult many published genealogies; and others have been had from private hands. It is not likely that many important facts have been overlooked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Walworths of America: Comprising Five Chapters of Family History, With Additional Chapters of Genealogy As a general rule it is a wise step for an author to take the reader into his confidence, and explain his reason for writing and publishing. It is a frankness that ought to pay. The plan and execution of a book is shaped very much by the special motives and aim of the writer. When these are known to the reader, it helps to disarm a great deal of criticism, it accounts for many things that would otherwise seem strange and imprudent, or at least awkward. Genealogy is the systematic study of family lineage and connections carried back or carried down from generation to generation. When carried backward it traces out pedigrees. When brought down from a common ancestor through various lines of generation it forms a lineal history. Whichever course it pursues, backward or forward, it does more than to trace descent. It maps out kinships, so gathering and preserving a knowledge of family ties, especially of blood relationships, so that a whole race is made to group together in history. I ask my Walworth cousins to shake hands with me a moment before they begin to turn over the leaves of this book, which I have undertaken for their benefit, and followed up to a conclusion with no small amount of difficulty and embarrassment. Why did I take it up at all? I am not a historian. It is not in my line. I am not a genealogist, although I confess to some small taste for biography. I do not take naturally to dates and statistics, for the same reason that I never liked straps to my pantaloons even in the days when they were most in fashion. Book History of the Wingate Family in England and in America

Download or read book History of the Wingate Family in England and in America written by Charles Edgar Lewis Wingate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Wingate Family in England and in America: With Genealogical Tables The history of the Wingate family has never been written before except in unconnected fragments, embracing one or two generations or a few individuals of one generation. Some thirty years ago Rev. Dr. A. H. Quint, of Dover, N. H., published in The Dover Enquirer four articles relating to the early. Wingates of America, and these sketches formed the nucleus 1 from which the present history has grown. Mr. John Wingate Thornton, of Boston, devoted a great deal of his time to investigating the genealogy of the family, and his unpublished work gave completeness to the story of the early Ameri can family, and also added facts relating to the English family. The work of connecting these records and of amplifying them has been carried on by the compiler of this book-by researches in libraries and town records, and by correspondence with other members of the family. The genealogical tables of the earlier generations are as complete as they can be made. Those of the later generations have not in all cases been fully carried out for two reasons, first and chiefly, because repeated letters have failed to bring to hand the facts asked for, second, because a lengthened delayof years in order to hunt up a few names of present generations was not considered a sufficient reason for postponing the publication of the descriptive history, and the genealogy already obtained With the present work in the hands of members of the family it is to be hoped that interest will be aroused and more historical facts brought forward.
