Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wykehamica, a History of Winchester College and Commoners: From the Foundation to the Present Day The authorities, written and oral, from whom I have learned the particulars contained in the following pages, are mainly as follows: - For the history and description of Winchester - Milner, Woodward, and T. Warton, together with some ancient maps of the town. For the life of the Founder - the biographies of Chaundler, Martin, and Lowth; also the old records in New College and Winchester libraries. For the description and history of the College from its foundation to the eighteenth century - Cockerell's "Essay on William of Wykeham," the old records of the College, Wilkins's "Concilia," Dugdale's "Monasticon," and occasionally, Strype. For the records of Old Commoners before Dr. Burton's time, I am chiefly indebted to the researches of F. J. Baigent, Esq., of Winchester. I desire also to acknowledge the valuable information he has given me on other points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Placing Charlotte Smith

Download or read book Placing Charlotte Smith written by Jacqueline M. Labbe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and far-ranging interest in place, space, and situation characterizes the work of Romantic-era British author Charlotte Smith (1749-1806). Featuring ten original essays, an introduction and an epilogue, this volume offers new insights into Smith’s life and work by exploring two central issues: Smith’s place as a foundational writer in her period, and her contribution to the creation of “place” as a concept of social and literary importance. The contributors analyze themes such as itineracy, the natural world, and patriotism; they also explore the position of Smith’s work and authorial identity in terms of genre, aesthetics, and market dynamics. With its innovative approach to place as a material location, symbolic principle, and literary device, this volume advances our understanding of Smith’s work. Placing Charlotte Smith reveals Smith as an author who not only energizes our interest in domestic concerns, but who also shapes a global discourse constituted by changing ideas about borders, travel, national, and international identities.

Book Public School Literature Civic Education and the Politics of Male Adolescence

Download or read book Public School Literature Civic Education and the Politics of Male Adolescence written by Jenny Holt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, British society gradually began to see 'adolescence' as a distinct social entity worthy of concentrated study and debate. Jenny Holt argues that the social construction of the public schoolboy, a figure made ubiquitous by a huge body of fictional, biographical, and journalistic work, had a disproportionate role to play in the development of social perceptions of adolescence and in forming ideas of how young people should be educated to become citizens in an age of increasing democracy. With attention to an admirably wide range of popular books as well as examples from the periodical press, Jenny Holt begins with a discussion of the ideas of late-eighteenth-century social radicals, and ends with the First World War, when the more 'serious' public school literature, which sought to involve juvenile readers in complex social and political issues, declined suddenly in popularity. Along the way, Jenny Holt considers the influence of Victorian Evangelical thought, Social Darwinism, and the early-twentieth-century National Efficiency movement on concepts of adolescence. Whether it is shedding new light on well-known texts by Thomas Hughes and Rudyard Kipling, providing a fascinating discussion of works written by boys themselves, or supplying historical context for the development of the concept of adolescence, this book will engage not only scholars of childhood and children's literature but Victorianists and those interested in the history of educational practice.
