Download or read book A Preliminary Assessment of the Monostatic Acoustic Sounder as a Forecast Aid in the Prediction of Advection Fogs at a Massachusetts Coastal Station written by Bruce A. Kunkel and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monostatic acoustic sounder was installed at the AFGL Weather Test Facility at Otis AFB, Massachusetts. Data were collected during 18 fog cases that occurred during the 1979 fog season. These data were used to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the usefulness of the monostatic acoustic sounder for predicting the occurrence and dissipation of east coast maritime fogs, and to learn more about the structure and evolutionary processes of the fog life cycle. Results indicate that the inversion height data obtained from the sounder, and information on the lifting condensation level, can be used to predict the occurrence of stratus and the probability of a fog event. The sounder provides no information, however, that would be useful in predicting the onset time of the fog event. There is some evidence of turbulent mixing causing the fog to lift, and low level convergence causing the fog to form.

Download or read book An Automated Low Cloud Prediction System written by Edward B. Geisler and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL) Weather Test Facility (WTF) at Otis AFB, MA, a network of cloud base height, visibility, and wind measuring instruments were used to explore techniques for the short range prediction of low cloud ceiling. AFGL developed this system in response to the USAF Air Weather Service's requirements to modernize its basic weather support capabilities. This system allowed AFGL to evaluate the ability of statistical forecasting techniques to provide decision assistance significantly improved over the decision assistance currently provided by climatology and persistence. The approach relies upon the use of a hierarchical clustering algorithm to transform the raw cloud base height data into an automated low cloud observation. Four prediction techniques (Regression Estimation of Event Probabilities, Equivalent Markov, climatology, and persistence) yielding probability estimates of low cloud ceiling were evaluated and comparisons made to determine their respective accuracy and reliability. In addition, thresholding techniques were used to convert probability forecasts (unit bias, maximum probability, iterative, and persistence). Analysis of the data collected at the AFGL WTF demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of the automated low cloud prediction system. Regression estimation of event probabilities provided accurate, reliable, high resolution probability forecasts with results superior to climatology, persistence, and Equivalent Markov.

Book excerpt: What would America look like if the liberals ultimately triumph, say by the year 2050? "WTF! This is a Liberal Utopia!" - a satire on liberalism, all the unintended consequences of this heart felt way of looking at the world around oneself, usually in the cloistered halls of academia, some government agency, some left-wing, nonprofit activist organization and, or congress. A really fantabulous glimpse at what the future holds when these magnificent, starry-eyed wonders finally come out on top! By 2050, America will have gone through some slight changes thus resulting in many really noteworthy phenomena. For one, there is no longer any need for elections: there will be a "Forever President" whose last name could be 'Castro.' Furthermore, odds are 'welfare moms' will have largely replaced small business enterprises with their monthly, government stipends; most Americans will as likely as not have never worked, because it is distinctly possible that there won't be any save for those "shovel ready jobs" the Democrats will in all likelihood keep bringing up. Gaia, Mother Earth, will have probably been rescued from the threatening effects of “Global Warming,” “Global Cooling,” and “Climate Change,” by turning to more agrarian economy where ‘maze’ is likely to be the cornerstone. For those lucky enough to own wheeled transportation, they will likely be driving around in either battery-powered, bubble cars made of styrofoam, or Latino lowriders which might look a lot like sparklers driving along the potholed highways of tomorrow. The English language will have been replaced by local, cultural colloquialisms with phonetics playing the principle role for making up words and phrases and writing them out. All this and more will be seen through the eyes of one of those liberal visionaries, an Ivy League English Professor whose name is Felix Schwartz; the narrator, the author and “the reader.” A glimpse into our wondrous future and what awaits us all when the magnificent munificents are finally given the reins to take America down that ‘Yellow Brick Road’ to their utopian, imaginary 'World of OZ.' "WTF! This is a Liberal Utopia!"
Download or read book WTF written by Robert Peston and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE TOP 10 BESTSELLER 'Richly argued and brilliantly written... a deeply thoughtful analysis that should be mandatory reading for anyone seeking to understand where we have gone wrong.' Vernon Bogdanor, Financial Times In WTF? Robert Peston draws on his years of experience as a political, economics and business journalist to show us what has gone bad and gives us a manifesto to put at least some of it right. Framed by two letters to his father (who died in early 2016) WTF? is Robert Peston's highly personal account of what those who have ruled us for years got so badly wrong, and what we need to do to mend the terrible fractures in our society. With characteristic passion and clarity he looks at what must happen to prevent democracy being subverted by technocratic geniuses with the ability to manipulate social media, how and whether it is possible to make a success of leaving the EU, what the lessons should be of the appalling Grenfell Tower tragedy, whether robots can be stopped from taking our work, what can be done to staunch the widening gap between rich and poor, and how to raise living standards for all. WTF? is a trenchant, often entertaining account of the recent past. It is also a call to action, giving hope to all of us who believe that taking back control is not only vital, but possible. 'A manual for our times that everyone should read.' Matthew d'Ancona

Download or read book Super Boom written by Jeffrey A. Hirsch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosper from the profitable opportunities of the next financial market super boom In 1976, Yale Hirsch predicted a fifteen-year super boom—a move in the stock market of 500% or more. His forecast proved accurate as the market rose and continued upward, eventually posting growth over 1,000% just before the tech crash in 2000. In Super Boom, Jeffrey Hirsch, President of the Hirsch Organization and Editor in Chief of the Stock Trader's Almanac, unveils the next market expansion. Building on his father's research from 1976, Hirsch has discovered that meteoric rises in stock indices are due to specific catalysts predominantly outside of the financial markets. History has a way of repeating itself, especially in the financial markets. The American economy, and subsequently the world economy, has always existed in a cycle of boom and bust: gold, grain, oil, technology, and most recently, real estate, have all bubbled and popped. The key to investing profitably is spotting macroeconomic historical trends and positioning to reap the benefits. Step-by-step, Hirsch puts together the pieces of this puzzle by revealing the central drivers of a super boom. Examines how new cultural paradigm-shifting technologies, as well as peace between major wars, could fuel a super boom Discusses how the massive injection of money by the government, in response to the global financial crisis and the Great Recession, as well as wartime spending, will eventually create an inflationary environment The data and research found here is based on historical information and the boom-and-bust cycle of the past century As markets and economies struggle over the next several years, remember to keep your eye on the future and get ready for the coming super boom and the next 500% move in the market. With this book as your guide, you'll benefit from the insights that only Jeffrey Hirsch can provide.

Book excerpt: This publication presents the latest innovations and achievements of academic communities on Decision Support Systems (DSS). These advances include theory systems, computer-aided methods, algorithms, techniques and applications related to supporting decision making. The aim is to develop approaches for applying information systems technology to increase the effectiveness of decision making in situations where the computer system can support and enhance human judgements in the performance of tasks that have elements which cannot be specified in advance. Also it is intended to improve ways of synthesizing and applying relevant work from resource disciplines to practical implementation of systems that enhance decision support capability. The resource disciplines include: information technology, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, decision theory, organizational theory, operations research and modeling. Researchers come from the Operational Research area but also from Decision Theory, Multicriteria Decision Making methodologies, Fuzzy sets and modeling tools. Based on the introduction of Information and Communication Technologies in organizations, the decisional process is evolving from a mono actor to a multi actor situation in which cooperation is a way to make the decision.
Download or read book Prediction of Slant Wind Shear with an Offset Tower Observation System written by H. Albert Brown and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of remote tower measurements of wind speed collected at the AFGL Weather Test Facility at Otis AFB, Massachusetts, demonstrated the accuracy of an offset tower system to predict the Sland Wind Shear (SWS) over a runway. The study of wind shear has been one of a continuing program of observing and short-range prediction capabilities to meet future Air Force requirements. The objective was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of two statistically-based approaches (extrapolation and screening-regression-determined equations) using offset tower data in predicting SWS speed for intervals of 0, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 min at two levels of severity. A surface-based runway wind observation system was used as a comparative measures.
