Download or read book Firestorm written by Stephen Prince and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-07 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was believed that September 11th would make certain kinds of films obsolete, such as action thrillers crackling with explosions or high-casualty blockbusters where the hero escapes unscathed. While the production of these films did ebb, the full impact of the attacks on Hollywood's creative output is still taking shape. Did 9/11 force filmmakers and screenwriters to find new methods of storytelling? What kinds of movies have been made in response to 9/11, and are they factual? Is it even possible to practice poetic license with such a devastating, broadly felt tragedy? Stephen Prince is the first scholar to trace the effect of 9/11 on the making of American film. From documentaries like Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) to zombie flicks, and from fictional narratives such as The Kingdom (2007) to Mike Nichols's Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Prince evaluates the extent to which filmmakers have exploited, explained, understood, or interpreted the attacks and the Iraq War that followed, including incidents at Abu Ghraib. He begins with pre-9/11 depictions of terrorism, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage (1936), and follows with studio and independent films that directly respond to 9/11. He considers documentary portraits and conspiracy films, as well as serial television shows (most notably Fox's 24) and made-for-TV movies that re-present the attacks in a broader, more intimate way. Ultimately Prince finds that in these triumphs and failures an exciting new era of American filmmaking has taken shape.
Download or read book An International Perspective on Disasters and Children s Mental Health written by Christina W. Hoven and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad international perspective on the psychological trauma faced by children and adolescents exposed to major disasters, and on the local public health response to their needs. An outstanding quality of the book is that it draws upon the experience of local researchers, clinicians, and public mental health practitioners who dedicated themselves to these children in the wake of overwhelming events. The chapters address exemplary responses to a wide variety of trauma types, including severe weather, war, industrial catastrophes, earthquakes, and terrorism. Because disasters do not recognize geographic, economic, or political boundaries, the chapters have been selected to reflect the diverse global community’s attempt to respond to vulnerable children in the most challenging times. The book, thus, examines a diverse range of healthcare systems, cultural settings, mental health infrastructure, government policies, and the economic factors that have played an important role in responses to traumatic events. The ultimate goal of this book is to stimulate future international collaborations and interventions that will promote children’s mental health in the face of disaster.

It had taken nearly ten years, cost roughly four billion dollars, and had suffered setbacks that would have most likely scuttled any other project. Today it serves as a reminder of what America is capable of when we put aside our differences and pull together for a common cause. Raab's articles appeared in the pages of Esquire between 2005 and 2015, and here are accompanied by many never-before-seen photos. -- adapted from back cover.

The ingenious method that he has devised is a remarkable process for precision projection of perspective. Modular Perspective is a synthesis of many brilliant studies and research into perspective theory from across the centuries, beginning with the invention of accurate three-dimensional projection from the 14th century and early Renaissance, the methodical system of traditional perspective projection, from plan, elevation and section, drafted point by point, from station point to picture plane, from vanishing points into three-dimensionality is synthesized into Dr. Salgado's compact and rigourous system.

Download or read book Crime Media and Reality written by Venessa Garcia and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's society, the public perception of crime has been skewed by how the media depicts it. People use the media for enjoyment, companionship, surveillance, and interpretation. The problem is that it becomes hard to separate fact from entertainment. This raises several questions. How are we consuming media? Are we consuming reality within the news? And are we consuming harmless pleasure from entertainment media? In Crime, Media, and Reality: Examining Mixed Messages about Crime and Justice in Popular Media, Venessa Garcia and Samantha Garcia Arkerson focus predominantly on the social constructions of crime and justice and how we absorb them. They look at the influence of crime news and true crime television series that prevent the public from understanding pure entertainment from the realities of crime and justice. They bring to light the social science knowledge missed by media "infotainment," which has blurred the line between information and entertainment. Throughout, all different forms of media are discussed, news media, crime dramas and true crime television series. In doing so, they keep all of its fascinating coverage while uncovering the reality of crime and justice. This book adds significant information to the constructs held by the general public by placing media depictions into historical, legal, and social context.
