Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ingardenia volume is the second in the Analecta Husserliana series that is entirely devoted to the phenomenology of Roman Ingarden. The first was volume IV (1976). Twenty years after Ingarden's death, this volume demonstrates that the Polish phenomenologist's contribution to philosophy and literary scholarship has received world-wide attention. His ideas have proven especially fruitful for the definition of the structure of the literary work of art and the subsequent recognition of its characteristic features. Of all the early phenomenologists who were students of Husserl, it is Ingarden whose work has faithfully pursued the original tenet that language "holds" the essence of the life-world "in readiness" (bereit halten). To investigate this premise with the rigor of a science, as Husserl had envisioned for phenomenology, was Ingarden's life work. That Ingarden did not quite reach his ambitious goal does not diminish his unquestionable achievement. The understanding of the nature of the literary work of art has increased enormously because of his analyses and aesthetics. The Polish phenomenologist investigated above all the work of art as a structure of necessary components which define and determine its nature. That the artistic ingredient was shortchanged under those conditions should not be surprising, particu larly since Ingarden usually kept a purist's philosophical distance from the concrete detail of the material under consideration. He was not concerned with individual works of art but with the principle that was shared by all of them as the defining feature of their being.

Book Don t Waste Your Cancer

Download or read book Don t Waste Your Cancer written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we as Christians called to respond when cancer invades our lives, whether our own bodies or those of our friends and family? On the eve of his own cancer surgery, John Piper writes about cancer as an opportunity to glorify God. With pastoral sensitivity, compassion, and strength, Piper gently but firmly acknowledges that we can indeed waste our cancer when we don't see how it is God's good plan for us and a hope-filled path for making much of Jesus. Don't Waste Your Cancer is for anyone touched by a life-threatening illness. It first appeared as an appendix in Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. Repackaged and republished, it will serve as a hope-giving resource for healthcare workers, pastors, counselors, and others caring for those with cancer and other serious illnesses. The booklets are also available in packs of ten.

This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This basic introduction to number theory is ideal for those with no previous knowledge of the subject. The main topics of divisibility, congruences, and the distribution of prime numbers are covered. Of particular interest is the inclusion of a proof for one of the most famous results in mathematics, the prime number theorem. With many examples and exercises, and only requiring knowledge of a little calculus and algebra, this book will suit individuals with imagination and interest in following a mathematical argument to its conclusion.

Book Fuzzy Commutative Algebra

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to be devoted entirely to fuzzy abstract algebra. It presents an up-to-date version of fuzzy commutative algebra, and focuses on the connection between L-subgroups of a group, and L-subfields of a field. In particular, an up-to-date treatment of nonlinear systems of fuzzy intersection equations is given.

Book Leavitt Path Algebras

Download or read book Leavitt Path Algebras written by Gene Abrams and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive introduction by three of the leading experts in the field, collecting fundamental results and open problems in a single volume. Since Leavitt path algebras were first defined in 2005, interest in these algebras has grown substantially, with ring theorists as well as researchers working in graph C*-algebras, group theory and symbolic dynamics attracted to the topic. Providing a historical perspective on the subject, the authors review existing arguments, establish new results, and outline the major themes and ring-theoretic concepts, such as the ideal structure, Z-grading and the close link between Leavitt path algebras and graph C*-algebras. The book also presents key lines of current research, including the Algebraic Kirchberg Phillips Question, various additional classification questions, and connections to noncommutative algebraic geometry. Leavitt Path Algebras will appeal to graduate students and researchers working in the field and related areas, such as C*-algebras and symbolic dynamics. With its descriptive writing style, this book is highly accessible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection describes recent progress on lazy learning, a branch of machine learning concerning algorithms that defer the processing of their inputs, reply to information requests by combining stored data, and typically discard constructed replies. It is the first edited volume in AI on this topic, whose many synonyms include `instance-based', `memory-based'. `exemplar-based', and `local learning', and whose topic intersects case-based reasoning and edited k-nearest neighbor classifiers. It is intended for AI researchers and students interested in pursuing recent progress in this branch of machine learning, but, due to the breadth of its contributions, it should also interest researchers and practitioners of data mining, case-based reasoning, statistics, and pattern recognition.

Book Traitors and True Poles

  • Author : Karen Majewski
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2003-04-15

Download or read book Traitors and True Poles written by Karen Majewski and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Poland’s century-long partition and in the interwar period of Poland’s reemergence as a state, Polish writers on both sides of the ocean shared a preoccupation with national identity. Polish-American immigrant writers revealed their persistent, passionate engagement with these issues, as they used their work to define and consolidate an essentially transnational ethnic identity that was both tied to Poland and independent of it. By introducing these varied and forgotten works into the scholarly discussion, Traitors and True Poles recasts the literary landscape to include the immigrant community’s own competing visions of itself. The conversation between Polonia’s creative voices illustrates how immigrants manipulated often difficult economic, social, and political realities to provide a place for and a sense of themselves. What emerges is a fuller picture of American literature, one vital to the creation of an ethnic consciousness. This is the first extended look at Polish-language fiction written by turn-of-the-century immigrants, a forgotten body of American ethnic literature. Addressing a blind spot in our understanding of immigrant and ethnic identity and culture, Traitors and True Poles challenges perceptions of a silent and passive Polish immigration by giving back its literary voice.

Book Chicago s Polish Downtown

Download or read book Chicago s Polish Downtown written by Victoria Granacki and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrating the first 75 years of Chicago's influential Polish neighborhood. Polish Downtown is Chicago's oldest Polish settlement and was the capital of American Polonia from the 1870s through the first half of the 20th century. Nearly all Polish undertakings of any consequence in the U.S. during that time either started or were directed from this part of Chicago's near northwest side. Chicago's Polish Downtown features some of the most beautiful churches in Chicago - St. Stanislaus Kostka, Holy Trinity and St. John Cantius - stunning examples of Renaissance and Baroque Revival architecture that form part of the largest concentration of Polish parishes in Chicago. The headquarters for almost every major Polish organization in America were clustered within blocks of each other and four Polish-language daily newspapers were published here. The heart of the photographic collection in this book is from the extensive library and archives of the Polish Museum of America, still located in the neighborhood today.
