Download or read book Climate Change and Water written by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change / Working Group Technical Support Unit and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Technical Paper addresses the issue of freshwater. Sealevel rise is dealt with only insofar as it can lead to impacts on freshwater in coastal areas and beyond. Climate, freshwater, biophysical and socio-economic systems are interconnected in complex ways. Hence, a change in any one of these can induce a change in any other. Freshwater-related issues are critical in determining key regional and sectoral vulnerabilities. Therefore, the relationship between climate change and freshwater resources is of primary concern to human society and also has implications for all living species. -- page vii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the relationship between energy balance and obesity is essential to develop effective prevention programs and policies. The International Agency for Research on Cancer convened a Working Group of world-leading experts in December 2015 to review the evidence regarding energy balance and obesity, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, and to consider the following scientific questions: (i) Are the drivers of the obesity epidemic related only to energy excess and/or do specific foods or nutrients play a major role in this epidemic? (ii) What are the factors that modulate these associations? (iii) Which types of data and/or studies will further improve our understanding? This book provides summaries of the evidence from the literature as well as the Working Group's conclusions and recommendations to tackle the global epidemic of obesity.

Book Regime Change and Ethnic Politics in Indonesia

Download or read book Regime Change and Ethnic Politics in Indonesia written by Taufiq Tanasaldy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Indonesian New Order regime fell in 1998, regional politics with strong ethnic content emerged across the country. In West Kalimantan the predominant feature was particularly that of the Dayaks. This surge, however, was not unprecedented. After centuries of occupying a subordinate place in the political and social hierarchy under the nominal rule of the Malay sultanates, Dayaks became involved in an enthusiastic political emancipation movement from 1945. The Dayaks secured the governorship as well as the majority of the regional executive head positions before they were shunned by the New Order regime. This book examines the development of Dayak politics in West Kalimantan from the colonial times until the first decade of the 21th century. It asks how and why Dayak politics has experienced drastic changes since 1945. It will look at the effect of regime change, the role of the individual leaders and organizations, the experience of marginalization, and conflicts on the course of Dayaks politics. It will also examine ethnic relations and recent political development up to 2010 in the province.

Book Rice By products Phytochemicals and Food Products Application

Download or read book Rice By products Phytochemicals and Food Products Application written by Bee Ling Tan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice is a vitally important staple food for almost half of the world’s population. As the global population increases, the demands for rice are expected to remain high. Since the rice industry will remain sustainable for a long time, the production of rice by-products will remain high. Substantial evidence suggests that rice by-products such as rice husk, rice straw, broken rice, rice germ, rice bran, and brewers’ rice may possess beneficial effects against oxidative stress and metabolic disorders. These beneficial effects have been linked to the phytochemicals present in rice by-products such as vitamin E, dietary fiber, γ-oryzanol, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and phytosterols. Despite this evidence, the literature pertaining to rice by-products and its derived components has not well been compiled. To this end, Rice By-products: Phytochemicals and Food Products Application provides full coverage of issues pertaining to rice by-products, namely rice demands and rice by-products production, phytonutrients and antioxidant properties of rice by-products, potential health benefits, application in food products, and future prospects. By summarizing all the information in a lucid and comprehensive manner, authors provide a cohesive representation of the literature on the molecular mechanisms involved in the pharmacological effects of the bioactive components that present in rice by-products, as well as plausible means for the prevention of metabolic disorders for readers and allied stakeholders.

Book Plant Organ Abscission From Models to Crops

Download or read book Plant Organ Abscission From Models to Crops written by Timothy J. Tranbarger and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant organ abscission is a developmental process regulated by the environment, stress, pathogens and the physiological status of the plant. In particular, seed and fruit abscission play an important role in seed dispersion and plant reproductive success and are common domestication traits with important agronomic consequences for many crop species. Indeed, in natural populations, shedding of the seed or fruit at the correct time is essential for reproductive success, while for crop species the premature or lack of abscission may be either beneficial or detrimental to crop productivity. The use of model plants, in particular Arabidopsis and tomato, have led to major advances in our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying organ abscission, and now many workers pursue the translation of these advances to crop species. Organ abscission involves specialized cell layers called the abscission zone (AZ), where abscission signals are perceived and cell separation takes place for the organ to be shed. A general model for plant organ abscission includes (1) the differentiation of the AZ, (2) the acquisition of AZ cells to become competent to respond to various abscission signals, (3) response to signals and the activation of the molecular and cellular processes that lead to cell separation in the AZ and (4) the post-abscission events related to protection of exposed cells after the organ has been shed. While this simple four-phase framework is helpful to describe the abscission process, the exact mechanisms of each stage, the differences between organ types and amongst diverse species, and in response to different abscission inducing signals are far from elucidated. For an organ to be shed, AZ cells must transduce a multitude of both endogenous and exogenous signals that lead to transcriptional and cellular and ultimately cell wall modifications necessary for adjacent cells to separate. How these key processes have been adapted during evolution to allow for organ abscission to take place in different locations and under different conditions is unknown. The aim of the current proposal is to present and be able to compare recent results on our understanding of organ abscission from model and crop species, and to provide a basis to understand both the evolution of abscission in plants and the translation of advances with model plants for applications in crop species.

Book Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals induced Metabolic Disorders and Treatment Strategies

Download or read book Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals induced Metabolic Disorders and Treatment Strategies written by Muhammad Sajid Hamid Akash and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a detailed and comprehensive analysis of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), covering their occurrence, exposure to humans and the mechanisms that lead to the parthogenesis of EDCs-induced metabolic disorders. The book is divided into three parts. Part I describes the physiology of the human endocrine system, with special emphasis on various types of metabolic disorders along with risk factors that are responsible for the development of these disorders. Part II addresses all aspects of EDCs, including their role in the induction of various risk factors that are responsible for the development of metabolic disorders. Part III covers up-to-date environmental regulatory considerations and treatment strategies that have been adopted to cure and prevent EDCs-induced metabolic disorders. This section will primarily appeal to clinicians investigating the causes and treatment of metabolic disorders. The text will also be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of Environmental Pharmacology and Toxicology, Environmental Pollution, Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Drug Metabolism/Pharmacokinetics.
