This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The facts contained in the English Blue Books, to which reference will be made in the following pages, are doubtless familiar to many persons. No apology, however, is needed for again bringing them forward, for it is a duty not to allow them to be forgotten. Some Parliamentary papers of temporary interest may drop out of sight, but these should be kept in view, and urged upon the conscience of every parent in the land; for to the conscientious parent, equally with the statesman, the importance of this evidence can not be exaggerated. A knowledge of facts is the more necessary at the present time, on account of the renewed endeavors to establish a false principle of legislation, which are now being made. It may not be generally known, that in consequence of the serious facts brought to light in relation to an actual trade in buying and selling young English girls for evil purposes on the Continent, a Select Committee of the House of Lords was appointed in 1881, to examine this subject. The Committee was directed to inquire into the actual facts relating to this traffic, and also to consider whether further legislation can remedy the evil. Although the work of the Committee was limited to the facts of this infamous traffic, and to the legislation which is necessary to suppress it, the evidence laid before it covers much wider ground. This evidence reveals, both directly and indirectly, facts of the gravest significance in relation to our own condition, as well as to that of our neighbors, in respect to social vice. It thus renders important assistance toward the solution of weighty but perplexing problems, which are now being widely discussed amongst us. The great body of facts brought forward in this report, relate to two different but false methods of dealing with vice, methods which have come prominently forward in the present century, in connection with the marked decay of the older forms of religious faith. The distinctive national tendencies of the French and English nations are strikingly shown in the attitude they have gradually assumed toward the subject of prostitution; the French with their remarkable organizing power tending toward tyranny, the English with their innate love of liberty toward license. These opposite national characteristics, with their results in what may be termed the "let alone" and the "female regulation" systems are here instructively revealed.

Book Emotional Histories in the Fight to End Prostitution

Download or read book Emotional Histories in the Fight to End Prostitution written by Michele Renée Greer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the ongoing fight to end prostitution through a historical study of its emotional communities. An issue that has long been the subject of much debate amongst feminists, governments and communities alike, the history of the fight to end prostitution has an important bearing on feminist politics today. This book identifies key abolitionist emotional communities, tracing their origins, interactions and evolutions with various historical and contemporary emotional styles. In doing do, Emotional Histories in the Fight to End Prostitution highlights a more nuanced view of the movement's history. From Moral Liberals in 19th century Britain to the American anti-pornography movement and Swedish 'Nordic Model', Emotional Histories in the Fight to End Prostitution shows how emotional styles and practices have influenced the evolution of the fight against prostitution in Britain, the United States and Western Europe. From the fear of sin, to maternal compassion and survivor shame and loss, Michele Greer historicizes emotions and studies them as dynamic forms of situated knowledge. In doing so, she sheds light on how women's lived experiences have been transformed and politicized, and raises important questions around how feminist emotions in social protest can not only challenge but unknowingly defend existing socio-political conventions and inequalities. Highlighting the links between past and present forms of abolitionism, it shows that this connection is more complex and far-reaching than currently assumed, and offers new perspectives on the history of emotions.

Book The Real Facts Of Life

Download or read book The Real Facts Of Life written by Margaret Jackson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2005-08-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last twenty years feminist research into the history of sexuality has made important contributions to the theoretical understanding of the relationship between sexuality and male power. When sexology became established as a science, feminists had for many years been engaged in a struggle to change male sexuality, by waging campaigns against male sexual violence and abuse of women and children; by challenging the institutions of marriage and prostitution; and by asserting in theory and in practice the right to female sexual autonomy. Despite the excellent research published in this important and fascinating aspect of feminist history, there are still gaps in our knowledge.; "The Real Facts of Life" aims to fill these gaps: Why and when did sexuality become an important political issue for the 19th century feminist?; What was the history of campaigns against double standards of sexual morality?; Why were feminists so divided in their views about sexual freedom and its relationship to women's emancipation? The analysis of these issues illuminates past and present feminists' ideas and theories about sexuality. Margaret Jackson's main aims in "The Real Facts of Life" are to make a contribution towards understanding the history of the struggle for female sexual autonomy; to provide a revolutionary feminist analysis of the social construction of sexuality and its relationship to male power, and to provide a critique of sexology and the male-defined concept of sexual "liberation".
