In the 80s, silent prayers were added for the success of the lay beliebers NSA and Sokka Gakkai itself, and in memory of its first two departed presidents. By the 90s, prayers of appreciation for the priesthood were abandoned. In this new format, after the recitation of the 2nd chapter and the verse portion of the 16th chapter, daimoku can be chanted for as long as desired, after all the silent prayers are said to end gongyo. The recitation now takes only about seven minutes, leaving more time for the primary practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. The silent prayers currently are appreciation to the Gohonzon, the representation of the ceremony in the air, the treasure tower, Shakyamuni and Taho Buddhas, to Nichiren, and the four bodhisattvas of the Earth. For the achievement of the goals of the practitioner and the deceased; and finally for the happiness of all living beings. It is indicated by Nichiren's Goshos, however, that more significant than the wording of the prayers is the practitioner's genuine purpose in doing gongyo and showing their gratitude and willingness to achieve their Supreme Awakening

Nichiren was arrested by the Kamakura government in 1271 and sentenced to exile on Sado Island. There he was in constant danger of assassination, and wrote the Kaimokusho to convince his remaining followers to follow his example in Buddhism. To do this, Nichiren criticized religions other than Buddhism, and then Buddhist sutras other than the Lotus Sutra. He asked the question "Am I not the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra and answered this question by quoting five testimonies to the truthfulness of his faith. He also identifies the three kinds of arrogant people and equates them with the three kinds of enemies of the Lotus Sutra.

Even though Pure Land Buddhism was born in China and currently constitutes the dominant form of Buddhist practice there, it has previously received very little attention from western scholars. In this book, Charles B. Jones examines the reasons for the lack of scholarly attention and why the few past treatments of the topic missed many of its distinctive features. He argues that the Chinese Pure Land tradition, with its characteristic promise of rebirth in the Pure Land to even non-elite or undeserving practitioners, should not be viewed from the perspective of the Japanese Pure Land tradition, which differs greatly. More accurately contextualizing Chinese Pure Land Buddhism within the landscape of Chinese Buddhism and the broader global Buddhist tradition, this work celebrates Chinese Pure Land, not as a school or sect, but as a unique and inherently valuable “tradition of practice.” This volume is organized thematically, clearly presenting topics such as the nature of the Pure Land, the relationship between “self-power” and “other-power,” the practice of nianfo (buddha-recollection), and the formation of the line of “patriarchs” that keep the tradition grounded.
