Book Writing as a Way of Healing

Download or read book Writing as a Way of Healing written by Louise Desalvo and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2000-03-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inspiring book, based on her twenty years of research, highly acclaimed author and teacher Louise DeSalvo reveals the healing power of writing. DeSalvo shows how anyone can use writing as a way to heal the emotional and physical wounds that are an inevitable part of life. Contrary to what most self-help books claim, just writing won't help you; in fact, there's abundant evidence that the wrong kind of writing can be damaging. DeSalvo's program is based on the best available and most recent scientific studies about the efficacy of using writing as a restorative tool. With insight and wit, she illuminates how writers, from Virginia Woolf to Henry Miller to Audre Lorde to Isabel Allende, have been transformed by the writing process. Writing as a Way of Healing includes valuable advice and practical techniques to guide and inspire both experienced and beginning writers.

Book Writing as a Tool for Healing

Download or read book Writing as a Tool for Healing written by Laura Van Dike Adair and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to better understand how writing experiences related to trauma and healing shaped preservice teachers’ identities and understandings of trauma in addition to informing their writing pedagogies. Building on Dutro’s (2019) notions of trauma-centered writing and critical witnessing practices, I used a multiple case studies design to study how six preservice teachers engaged in writing related to trauma and healing within an Adolescent Literacy course. In addition to written artifact, my data included interviews and class Zoom recordings. To frame my exploration of preservice teachers’ experiences writing, sharing, and/or witnessing trauma and healing-centered writing and how they conceptualized these experiences in relation to their own teaching, I drew on Holland, Lachicotte, Skinner, and Cain’s (2001) “figured worlds,” Wissman and Wiseman’s (2011) “narrative control,” and Dutro’s (2019) “critical witnessing.” The following research questions guided this study: (1) How do writing experiences related to trauma and healing shape preservice teachers’ personal identity development? (2) How do writing experiences related to trauma and healing shape preservice teachers’ understanding of traumatic experiences? (3) How do writing experiences related to trauma and healing inform preservice teachers’ writing pedagogies? The data indicated that writing related to trauma and healing increased agency, empathy, and authenticity among both writers and witnesses. Whereas trauma was a disruptive experience (LaCapra, 2001) that fractured and dysregulated the self (Camangian, 2010; Mutch & Latai, 2019), the act of putting words to their experiences moved preservice teachers towards whole-person integration (MacCurdy, 2007), authentic self-representation (Bradshaw, 2005; Brown, 2010, 2015), and empathetic unsettlement (LaCapra, 2001). Data also showed that through processes of naming, organizing, restorying, and sharing traumatic experiences, healing was possible. Preservice teachers gained control over their traumatic memories, a process that facilitated both individual and collective healing. These open-ended writing invitations and critical witnessing postures created sacred truth spaces (San Pedro, 2017) that preservice teachers planned to emulate in their own writing pedagogies. Overall, this study contributes to understandings of humanizing and healing literacy experiences within teacher education and the potential for these experiences to inform preservice teachers’ work in classroom settings

Book Adult Adoptees and Writing to Heal

Download or read book Adult Adoptees and Writing to Heal written by Liz DeBetta and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world where conversations about trauma are becoming commonplace and adopted people are using their voices to educate the general public about the effects of maternal separation and genealogical bewilderment. But for many adult adoptees the act of speaking truth to power is still fraught. Personal writing can unlock long held silences and help adult adoptees feel empowered to rewrite their narratives. The need to deconstruct dominant narratives about adoption and its inherent loss and trauma is necessary if we are to reform an institution that has damaged many generations of mothers and children. Because many adoptees do not have access to adoption and trauma competent therapists, writing is an accessible therapeutic modality that can be used to reframe narratives that position adoptees as the object rather than the subject. Adult Adoptees and Writing to Heal shares the framework and method of using writing as a practice for adult adoptees, therapists, teachers, and researchers interested in learning how to migrate and heal embodied trauma. It analyzes lived experience and the author’s own writing to develop a methodology for moving toward wholeness by writing and speaking the truth of internal adoptee experiences.

Book We Heal from Memory

Download or read book We Heal from Memory written by C. Steele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an examination of the poetry of Anne Sexton, Audre Lorde, and Gloria Anzaldúa, We Heal From Memory paints a vivid picture of how our culture carries a history of traumatic violence - child sexual abuse, the ownership and enforcement of women's sexuality under slavery, the transmission of violence through generations, and the destruction of non-white cultures and their histories through colonization. According to Cassie Premo Steele, the poetry of Sexton, Lorde, and Anzaldúa allows us to witness and to heal from such disparate traumatic events.

Book Writing Witnessing Healing

Download or read book Writing Witnessing Healing written by Cassandra Lo and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now more than ever, it is imperative that we provide spaces for our students to share and witness testimonies of trauma, specifically about losses that they may experience. With little room in the curriculum for these important avenues of expression, students are grieving in isolation without support. Black male students, who are often seen as "problems" or "trouble," are especially not provided with the spaces or moments necessary to understand and write about death experiences or impactful moments in their lives. With a theoretical framework derived from critical race theory, trauma studies and relational teaching, I argue that spaces for sharing and building communities of loss are critical for Black male students who are particularly deprived of these opportunities. The primary goal of this study was to improve the schooling experiences for Black male students who are grieving from trauma, especially the death of a family member, by examining what happens when they are provided with space to share their stories and witness others' testimonies. For this study, students at an all-boys' charter high school in a large Northeast city met weekly during the Spring 2017 semester to write and share about their lived experiences. This qualitative study employed research methods from the fields of practitioner inquiry and narrative inquiry. The findings from this study revealed that: 1. Certain pedagogies lend themselves to sharing written and spoken narratives about lost loved ones and critical witnessing and reciprocal witnessing are necessary parts of these student communities. 2. When faced with loss, the students sought support structures and experienced both positive and negative support from their families, peers and school staff. 3. There was a range of emotions, from anger to joy, when remembering through writing and speaking about their deceased family members. For students who experienced loss, especially those who are marginalized and silenced because of their identities, testimonials of trauma are necessary to share, but are often suppressed and not witnessed by others. This study acknowledges the affordances of a classroom where trauma narratives are shared and witnessed.

Book excerpt: "This book has the power to heal the world one person at a time." - Lorilee Binstock, host of A Trauma Survivor's Podcast and founder of Authentic Insider Magazine WHAT IF YOU ALLOWED YOURSELF TO TRULY FEEL? Whether it’s grief, despair, or anxiety, society will always find a way to label feelings as “messy.” But burying these reactions only leads to greater emotional turmoil. In the past, we have looked to self-help gurus like Gary Zukav, whose Seat of the Soul inspired Oprah Winfrey to help America process trauma. So why did that book resonate with her, and what does everyone still love about Oprah? It's not that she's rich or that she's successful...it's her authenticity. She taps into what she has described in her SuperSoul Sundays as Authentic Power: uniting all the pieces of herself so that she's always bringing her whole self to everything she does. Oprah didn't ignore her messy feelings: she shared them with America, and she processed and integrated them in order to tap into her own authentic power. She became her authentic self, which exudes from her in every second that you see her. In Authentic Power: Give Yourself Permission to Feel, accomplished entrepreneur, journalist, publicist, and award-winning podcaster Ashley Bernardi continues the brave work of these great thought leaders by teaching you that your darkest hours are disguised opportunities to uncover and process, feel, heal, and grow. Bernardi’s personal journey began when she witnessed her father’s sudden death at age eleven. Years later, a mysterious illness began a personal quest toward healing and taught her that trauma and adversity can be sources of strength and self-discovery.
