Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Book Foundations of Writing for University Study

Download or read book Foundations of Writing for University Study written by David Fonteyn and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains the fundamentals of effective academic writing for university studies across multiple genres and formats. It is intended for students who are either in the early stages of their university studies, or are preparing to enter a university degree. One of the ways this textbook differs from other textbooks on academic writing is its focus on the organisation of the English sentence through Theme and Rheme. The Theme is what the sentence is about, while the Rheme is what is being said about the Theme. In the English clause, the Theme is at the beginning and the Rheme follows. At the same time as the English clause is divided into Theme and Rheme, the clause can be understood as a unit of information where New information is provided to Given information. One of the central aims of the textbook is to increase awareness of the flow of Given and New information from sentence to sentence, and for students to have greater ability in its organisation. Moreover, New information is formally organised through prosody, or rhythm and intonation patterns. This approach takes account of English rhythms, intonation and stress patterns that accompany sentences and how this relates to writing sentences. Through the Theme/Rheme and Given/New approach, combined with an understanding of Genre, this book aims to both increase awareness of these aspects of the English sentence and explore how this aspect of English facilitates clearer and more effective writing.

Book Donald Judd Writings

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald Judd
  • Publisher : David Zwirner Books
  • Release : 2016-11-22
  • ISBN : 1941701353
  • Pages : 1057 pages

Download or read book Donald Judd Writings written by Donald Judd and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With hundreds of pages of new and previously unpublished essays, notes, and letters, Donald Judd Writings is the most comprehensive collection of the artist’s writings assembled to date. This timely publication includes Judd’s best-known essays, as well as little-known texts previously published in limited editions. Moreover, this new collection also includes unpublished college essays and hundreds of never-before-seen notes, a critical but unknown part of Judd’s writing practice. Judd’s earliest published writing, consisting largely of art reviews for hire, defined the terms of art criticism in the 1960s, but his essays as an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York, published here for the first time, contain the seeds of his later writing, and allow readers to trace the development of his critical style. The writings that followed Judd’s early reviews are no less significant art-historically, but have been relegated to smaller publications and have remained largely unavailable until now. The largest addition of newly available material is Judd’s unpublished notes—transcribed from his handwritten accounts of and reactions to subjects ranging from the politics of his time, to the literary texts he admired most. In these intimate reflections we see Judd’s thinking at his least mediated—a mind continuing to grapple with questions of its moment, thinking them through, changing positions, and demonstrating the intensity of thought that continues to make Judd such a formidable presence in contemporary visual art. Edited by the artist’s son, Judd Foundation curator and co-president Flavin Judd, and Judd Foundation archivist Caitlin Murray, this volume finally provides readers with the full extent of Donald Judd’s influence on contemporary art, art history, and art criticism.

Book Radclyffe Hall

Download or read book Radclyffe Hall written by Richard Dellamora and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Well of Loneliness is probably the most famous lesbian novel ever written, and certainly the most widely read. It contains no explicit sex scenes, yet in 1928, the year in which the novel was published, it was deemed obscene in a British court of law for its defense of sexual inversion and was forbidden for sale or import into England. Its author, Radclyffe Hall, was already well-known as a writer and West End celebrity, but the fame and notoriety of that one book has all but eclipsed a literary output of some half-dozen other novels and several volumes of poetry. In Radclyffe Hall: A Life in the Writing Richard Dellamora offers the first full look at the entire range of Hall's published and unpublished works of fiction, poetry, and autobiography and reads through them to demonstrate how she continually played with the details of her own life to help fashion her own identity as well as to bring into existence a public lesbian culture. Along the way, Dellamora revises many of the truisms about Hall that had their origins in the memoirs of her long-term partner, Una Troubridge, and that have found an afterlife in the writings of Hall's biographers. In detailing Hall's explorations of the self, Dellamora is the first seriously to consider their contexts in Freudian psychoanalysis as understood in England in the 1920s. As important, he uncovers Hall's involvement with other modes of speculative psychology, including Spiritualism, Theosophy, and an eclectic brand of Christian and Buddhist mysticism. Dellamora's Hall is a woman of complex accommodations, able to reconcile her marriage to Troubridge with her passionate affairs with other women, and her experimental approach to gender and sexuality with her conservative politics and Catholicism. She is, above all, a thinker continually inventive about the connections between selfhood and desire, a figure who has much to contribute to our own efforts to understand transgendered and transsexual existence today.
