Book Fire in the Water Earth in the Air

Download or read book Fire in the Water Earth in the Air written by Christopher J. Oglesby and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Buddy Holly and the Crickets to the Flatlanders, Terry Allen, and Natalie Maines, Lubbock, Texas, has produced songwriters, musicians, and artists as prolifically as cotton, conservatives, and windstorms. While nobody questions where the conservatives come from in a city that a recent nonpartisan study ranked as America's second most conservative, many people wonder why Lubbock is such fertile ground for creative spirits who want to expand the boundaries of thought in music and art. Is it just that "there's nothing else to do," as some have suggested, or is there something in the character of Lubbock that encourages creativity as much as conservatism? In this book, Christopher Oglesby interviews twenty-five musicians and artists with ties to Lubbock to discover what it is about this community and West Texas in general that feeds the creative spirit. Their answers are revealing. Some speak of the need to rebel against conventional attitudes that threaten to limit their horizons. Others, such as Joe Ely, praise the freedom of mind they find on the wide open plains. "There is this empty desolation that I could fill if I picked up a pen and wrote, or picked up a guitar and played," he says. Still others express skepticism about how much Lubbock as a place contributes to the success of its musicians. Jimmie Dale Gilmore says, "I think there is a large measure of this Lubbock phenomenon that is just luck, and that is the part that you cannot explain." As a whole, the interviews create a portrait not only of Lubbock's musicians and artists, but also of the musical community that has sustained them, including venues such as the legendary Cotton Club and the original Stubb's Barbecue. This kaleidoscopic portrait of the West Texas music scene gets to the heart of what it takes to create art in an isolated, often inhospitable environment. As Oglesby says, "Necessity is the mother of creation. Lubbock needed beauty, poetry, humor, and it needed to get up and shake its communal ass a bit or go mad from loneliness and boredom; so Lubbock created the amazing likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Joe Ely."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Carolyn Walker's Forward to WATER EARTH FIRE AIR: "Ed Van Slambrouck's book of poetry, WATER EARTH FIRE AIR, is one man's wise, sentimental, and sometimes playful meditation on God's love and the experience of His creation. Earnest as a child's devotional, heartfelt as a father's prayer, and occasionally touched with a tongue-in-cheek pun, Van Slambrouck's poetry collection, his fourth in an ambitious series fueled by a prolific writing schedule, explores God's bounty as he lived it in eight decades of life. Using the language of imagery and style (informed by Van Slambrouck's gift for music) the collection takes the reader by the spirit and coaxes him through such diverse experiences as what it means to adore a woman, raise children, conquer illness, appreciate a friend, play the saxophone, feel the wind and worship at the foot of the Cross." Acclimations about E. V. Van Slambrouck's other books: Opus in Chromatic Words (2010): "Ed's ever-present saxophone permeates a life celebrated in word-images, framed with music and poetry." James F. Ahearn, Poet and President of the Poetry Society of Michigan. Heart Music (2008): "Poetry is the perfect form for his thoughts because it combines sound and image in a way that is as close to song as one can get, while still using language." Margo LaGattuta, Poet and Teacher. OnSpring: A Family of Poems (2005): "...thanks for sending me your touching chapbook, OnSpring, whose pages are heartfelt, moving, linguistically admirable and playful." Peter Meinke, Poet and Professor.

Book The Chronicles of Air Water and the Source

Download or read book The Chronicles of Air Water and the Source written by Etaniel Ben C. Yehuda and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicles of Air, Water, and the Source presents a compilation of selected poems written from 1996 to 2007 by poet Etaniel Ben C Yehuda. In these verses, he takes a personal and emotional roller coaster to affirm his humanity. One poem may speak of loneliness and a sense of despair, while the next poem provides a strong ray of hope. Following these trains of thought, Yehuda seeks to provide insight into his own eclectic, complex world. The poems in this intimate collection are full of emotion, heart, reality, fantasy, desire, social awareness, and self-awareness, with a focus on introspection. Yehuda has a strong philosophy that all external problems can be resolved but only after resolving any internal issues. If you need reassurance that life's obstacles are not singular to you, then The Chronicles of Air, Water, and the Source will provide that confirmation while conveying a sense of peace and healing. Destination: Arrival Where I am going? What am I doing? I need you to need me I need me to need you If it's one or four let it be confusion wants to encompass semi-constant feeling goals and aspiration eclipse but that passes as time moves forward When am I going to?
